A Priceless Gift

소중한 선물

Long ago, an honest merchant lived in Genoa, Italy.

먼 옛날 이탈리아 제노바에 정직한 상인 한 명이 살았다.

 

His name was Antonio, and he went to different places to support his family by trading.

그의 이름은 Antonio로, 그는 교역으로 가족을 부양하기 위해 여러 곳을 다녔다.

 

One day, he filled his ship with goods and visited a faraway island.

어느 날 그는 배에 상품을 가득 싣고 머나먼 섬으로 갔다.

 

There he traded tools for spices and books for nuts.

거기서 그는 공구를 향신료와 바꾸었고, 책을 견과류와 바꾸었다.

 

Thanks to Antonio, the islanders could get what they needed.

Antonio 덕에 섬사람들은 필요한 것을 얻을 수 있었다.

 

One night, Antonio had dinner with the island’s queen at her palace.

어느 날 밤, Antonio는 궁전에서 그 섬의 여왕과 저녁 식사를 했다.

 

When dinner was served, rats appeared, and some servants chased them away with sticks.

식사가 나왔을 때 쥐들이 나타났고, 하인 몇 명이 막대기로 쥐를 쫓아내었다.

 

Antonio was greatly surprised that there were rats in the palace.

Antonio는 궁전에 쥐가 있다는 사실에 무척 놀랐다.

 

He asked, “Are there no cats on this island?”

그는 “이 섬에는 고양이가 없습니까?”라고 물었다.

 

 

The queen looked puzzled.

여왕은 어리둥절한 것처럼 보였다.

 

“What is a cat?” she asked.

“고양이가 뭔가요?”라고 그녀가 물었다.

 

The merchant said to himself, “What the islanders here need is not tools or books, but cats.”

상인은 “여기 섬사람들이 필요로 하는 것은 공구나 책이 아니라 고양이야.”라고 혼자 중얼거렸다.

 

He brought two cats from his ship and let them run free.

그는 배에서 고양이 두 마리를 데리고 와서, 자유롭게 돌아다니도록 풀어놓았다.

 

“What amazing animals!” cried the queen when she saw all the rats run away.

“정말 놀라운 동물이네요!” 쥐가 모두 도망가는 것을 보자 여왕이 감탄하였다.

 

She gave Antonio a chest that was filled with jewels.

그녀는 Antonio에게 보석이 가득한 상자를 주었다.

 

Back in Italy, Antonio told his friends about his good fortune.

이탈리아로 돌아와서, Antonio는 자신에게 일어난 행운을 친구들에게 이야기했다.

 

Luigi, the richest merchant in Genoa, heard the story and was jealous.

제노바에서 가장 부유한 상인인 Luigi는 그 이야기를 듣고 시샘이 일었다.

 

“Cats are worthless,” Luigi thought.

“고양이는 쓸모없어.” Luigi가 생각했다.

 

“I’ll bring the queen what is really valuable. I’m sure that the queen will give me more jewels.”

“난 여왕에게 정말로 귀중한 것을 가지고 갈 거야. 틀림없이 여왕이 내게 더 많은 보석을 줄 거야.”

 

Luigi packed his ship with wonderful paintings and other works of art.

Luigi는 멋진 그림들과 다른 예술 작품을 배에 실었다.

 

He took the gifts to the island.

그는 선물을 섬으로 가지고 갔다.

 

To get a chance to meet the queen, he told the islanders a lie that he was a good friend of Antonio’s.

여왕을 만날 기회를 얻기 위해서, 그는 자신이 Antonio의 친한 친구라고 섬사람들에게 거짓말을 했다.

 

When the queen heard about Luigi, she invited him to her palace for dinner.

Luigi에 관해 듣고, 여왕은 그를 궁전으로 저녁 식사에 초대했다.

 

Before sitting down at the table, Luigi presented the queen with all his gifts, and the queen thanked him again and again.

식탁에 앉기 전에 Luigi는 여왕에게 자신이 가져온 온갖 선물을 전했고, 여왕은 그에게 여러 차례 감사하다고 했다.

 

“I’ll repay you with a priceless gift,” said the queen.

“당신께 값진 선물로 보답하겠습니다.”라고 여왕이 말했다.

 

Luigi watched the queen whisper in a servant’s ear.

Luigi는 여왕이 하인의 귀에 대고 속삭이는 것을 지켜보았다.

 

 

He became excited and hopeful.

그는 흥분되고 기대에 부풀었다.

 

He was sure that he would receive more jewels than Antonio.

그는 Antonio보다 많은 보석을 받게 될 거라고 확신했다.

 

After a while, the servant returned with a box, and the queen presented it to Luigi.

잠시 후에 하인이 상자 하나를 가지고 돌아왔고, 여왕은 그것을 Luigi에게 주었다.

 

When Luigi opened the box, he was speechless.

상자를 열어 본 Luigi는 말문이 막혔다.

 

There was a kitten in the box.

상자 안에는 새끼 고양이 한 마리가 들어 있었다.

 

“Antonio gave us the priceless cats, and we now have some kittens,” said the queen.

“Antonio가 우리에게 매우 귀한 고양이들을 줬는데, 이제 새끼 고양이 몇 마리가 생겼어요.”라고 여왕이 말했다.

 

“In return for the wonderful gifts you gave us, we want to give you what is most valuable to us.”

“당신이 우리에게 준 멋진 선물에 보답하는 뜻에서, 우리에게 가장 값진 것을 당신에게 드리고 싶어요.”

 

Luigi realized that, in the queen’s mind, the kitten was worth far more than all the jewels in the world.

여왕의 생각에는 세상의 온갖 보석보다 새끼 고양이가 훨씬 더 가치 있다는 것을 Luigi는 깨달았다.

 

He tried to look pleased with the gift.

그는 선물에 대해 기뻐하는 표정을 지으려고 애썼다.

 

He knew that was the right thing to do.

그게 올바른 행동이라는 것을 그는 알았다.

 

Luigi did not return home a richer man.

Luigi는 더 부유한 사람이 되어 집으로 돌아오지는 않았다.

 

But he was surely a wiser one.

하지만 그는 분명히 더 현명한 사람이 되었다.
