Journey to a Colorful Land

다채로운 땅으로의 여정

One day, Dad showed me a wonderful picture of the Northern Lights.

어느 날, 아빠는 나에게 멋진 북극광 사진 하나를 보여 주셨다. 

 

It was sent by Erik Nielsen, who is Dad's close friend living in Greenland.

그것은 그린란드에 사는 아빠의 친한 친구인 Erik Nielsen씨가 보낸 것이었다. 

 

He invited my whole family, and we decided to go.

그는 우리 가족 모두를 초대했고, 우리는 가기로 결정했다. 

 

From that moment on, I could not wait to see the Northern Lights with my own eyes.

그때부터, 나는 내 눈으로 북극광을 보고 싶어서 참을 수가 없었다. 

 

Day 1

첫째 날 

 

We were finally about to land at Nuuk Airport in a few minutes.

우리는 드디어 몇 분 내에 Nuuk 공항에 착륙할 참이었다. 

 

I looked down and saw ocean, hills, and buildings with some snow on them here and there.

나는 바다, 언덕들, 그리고 여기저기에 약간씩 눈이 쌓인 건물들을 내려다보았다. 

 

It looked cold out, but after such a long flight I could not wait to get off the airplane.

밖이 추워 보였으나, 이렇게 장거리 비행을 하고 나니 나는 비행기에서 내리고 싶어서 참을 수 없었다. 

 

When I got out, I noticed other passengers clapping their hands as they got off.

내가 밖으로 나왔을 때, 다른 승객들이 내리면서 박수를 치는 것이 보였다. 

 

Mom and I followed what they did without knowing why.

엄마와 나는 이유도 모른 채 그들이 하는 것을 따라 했다. 

 

Dad later told me that it is an old tradition celebrating a safe arrival. Interesting!

아빠는 후에 이것이 안전하게 도착한 것을 축하하는 오랜 전통이라고 내게 말씀해 주셨다. 흥미로웠다! 

 

The air was certainly cold but refreshing.

공기는 확실히 차가웠으나 신선했다.

 

Mr. Nielsen was waiting for us in the arrival zone. He looked very kind.

Nielsen 씨는 도착장에서 우리를 기다리고 있었다. 그는 매우 친절해 보였다.

 

He drove us to his home near the airport.

그는 공항 근처에 있는 그의 집으로 우리를 데려갔다. 

 

Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, looked quite modern and clean.

그린란드의 수도인 누크는 매우 현대적이고 깨끗해 보였다. 

 

As we entered his house, Ms. Nielsen and their son Joas said, "Tikilluarit."

우리가 그의 집에 들어가자, Nielsen 부인과 그들의 아들 Joas가 “티킬루아릿(Tikilluarit)”이라고 말했다. 

 

It means "welcome" in Greenlandic.

그것은 그린란드어로 “환영합니다”라는 뜻이다. 

 

That evening we had dinner at their home.

They cooked suaasat, a traditional Greenlandic stew.

Ms. Nielsen told us it was made from whale meat with chopped onions, carrots, mushrooms, and several grains such as barley.

Nielsen 부인은 우리에게 그것이 다진 양파, 당근, 버섯, 그리고 보리와 같은 몇 가지 곡물과 고래 고기로 만들어졌다고 말해 주었다. 

 

The flavor was a bit strong and the meat was chewy, but I liked it.

While having dinner, the Nielsens told us about some Greenlandic traditions.

When I said I wanted to learn more, they suggested that we go to the National Museum of Greenland together.

Day 2

Mr. Nielsen and Joas took my family to the National Museum of Greenland.

On our way to the museum, I noticed a red building that looked like a mailbox.

Actually, it was a real mailbox! "It is the world's biggest mailbox.

It was designed to protect the mail from strong snowy winds," explained Joas.

When I got close to it and looked up, I felt as if I were in Giant Land in Gulliver's Travels.

At the museum, we could see traditional costumes, tools, and handicrafts made by the Inuit, who are the native Greenlanders.

They used animal skins to make warm clothes and even boats.

Using animal bones and horns, they made weapons and tools such as knives and needles, and even carved works of art.

동물 뼈와 뿔을 사용해서, 그들은 칼과 바늘들과 같은 무기들이나 도구들, 심지어 예술 작품들까지 깎아서 만들었다. 

 

I could sense their wisdom and strong determination to overcome the harsh environment.

나는 가혹한 환경을 이겨내기 위한 그들의 지혜와 강인한 투지를 감지할 수 있었다.

 

Day 3

셋째 날 

After breakfast, my family headed to Ilulissat with Mr. Nielsen.

아침 식사 후에 우리 가족은 Nielsen 씨와 일루리사트(Ilulissat)로 향했다. 

 

He explained that the word "ilulissat" means "icebergs" in Greenlandic.

그는 ‘일루리사트(ilulissat)’라는 말이 그린란드어로 ‘빙산들’을 뜻한다고 설명했다. 

 

I could see many tourists who were there to see the icebergs.

나는 빙산들을 보기 위해 그곳에 온 수많은 여행객들을 볼 수 있었다. 

 

The first thing that caught my eye was a road sign with a picture of a sled on it.

가장 먼저 내 눈을 사로잡은 것은 썰매 그림이 있는 어느 도로 표지판이었다. 

 

I asked Mr. Nielsen what it was for.

나는 Nielsen 씨에게 그것이 무엇을 위한 것인지 물었다. 

 

He said, "It warns people about the dog sleds passing through this area."

그는 “그것은 사람들에게 이 지역을 통과하는 개 썰매들에 대해 경고하는 것이야.”라고 말했다. 

 

I wanted to see a dog sled, but it was not snowy enough for them yet.

We took a boat from the town harbor to see the icebergs better.

What we saw as we approached them left us speechless.

Enormous icebergs of different shapes were floating in the sea.

Some of them were as big as mountains.

Mr. Nielsen said, "The icebergs are melting and slowly changing into new shapes every day.

In fact, they are melting faster than ever."

That means we can never see the icebergs in the same shape twice.

Dad kept taking pictures, and I tried my best to record the images of the beautiful icebergs in my mind.

아빠는 계속 사진들을 찍으셨고, 나는 내 마음속에 아름다운 빙산들의 모습을 기록하고자 최선을 다했다.

 

Day 4

넷째 날 

 

Leaving Ilulissat behind, we went to Kangerlussuaq, the final destination of our journey.

일루리사트(Ilulissat)를 뒤로한 채, 우리는 우리 여행의 마지막 목적지인 캉에를루수아크(Kangerlussuaq)로 갔다. 

 

It is one of the best places in Greenland to see the Northern Lights.

그곳은 그린란드에서 북극광을 보기에 가장 좋은 장소들 중 하나이다. 

 

Mr. Nielsen insisted that we get settled early, saying the Northern Lights might appear any time after dark.

Nielsen 씨는 날이 어두워진 후에는 북극광이 언제든 나타날 수 있다며, 우리가 일찍 자리를 잡아야 한다고 주장했다. 

 

So, we set up on a hill and had dinner while waiting calmly for the lights.

그래서, 우리는 어느 언덕 위에 자리를 잡고 북극광을 조용히 기다리면서 저녁을 먹었다. 

 

Hours passed without any sign of them in the sky.

하늘에서 북극광에 관한 어떤 조짐도 없이 수 시간이 흘렀다. 

 

I began to doubt that we could see the lights.

나는 우리가 북극광을 볼 수 있을지 의심하기 시작했다. 

 

At that moment, Mom shouted, "Look up there!"

그때, 엄마가 외쳤다. “저 위를 봐!” 

 

Some lights began to appear in the sky!

약간의 불빛들이 하늘에 나타나기 시작했다! 

 

At first, they looked like candle flames waving in the wind.

처음에는, 그것들이 바람에 흔들리는 촛불처럼 보였다. 

 

Then, they gradually turned into curtains of green lights that kept changing color and shape.

그러더니, 그것들은 점차 색깔과 모양이 계속 변하는 녹색 불빛의 커튼들로 변했다. 

 

It looked as if the lights were slowly dancing to the music of nature.

그것은 마치 저 불빛들이 자연의 음악에 맞추어 천천히 춤을 추고 있는 것처럼 보였다. 

 

Their beauty was far beyond what I had imagined from the photos Dad had shown me.

그것들의 아름다움은 아빠가 나에게 보여주었던 사진들로부터 내가 상상했었던 것을 훨씬 뛰어넘었다. 

 

It was the best night of my life.

내 인생 최고의 밤이었다.

 

Day 5

다섯째 날 

 

This morning, Mr. Nielsen kindly saw us off at the airport.

이날 아침에, Nielsen 씨는 친절하게도 우리를 공항까지 배웅해 주었다. 

 

As the plane took off, I looked down at Greenland once again.

비행기가 이륙하는 동안에 나는 다시 한번 그린란드를 내려다보았다. 

 

The landscape looked the same, but this time I had quite a different feeling.

풍경은 같아 보였지만, 이번에는 상당히 다른 느낌이 들었다. 

 

Greenland may not be as "green" as the name suggests.

그린란드는 이름이 암시하는 것처럼 ‘초록색’은 아닐지도 모른다. 

 

However, it showed me the beauty of its grand nature.

그러나 그린란드는 나에게 그 웅장한 자연의 아름다움을 보여 주었다. 

 

I was also able to learn about the strong spirit of the native people living here.

나는 또한 이곳에서 살고 있는 원주민들의 강인한 정신에 대해서도 배울 수 있었다. 

 

It will always remain in my memory as a dynamic and colorful place to visit.

그곳은 내 기억 속에 항상 역동적이면서도 다채로운 방문지로 남아 있을 것이다.
