Many people around us are in need of help.

우리 주변의 많은 사람들은 도움이 필요하다. 

 

That is why volunteer work is necessary.

그것이 바로 자원봉사가 필요한 이유다.

나마스떼, Kumari! - 김민지 

 

At the beginning of summer vacation, my brother asked me to help him at a community welfare center.

여름방학 초에, 오빠는 나에게 사회 복지관에서 그를 도와달라고 부탁했다. 

 

He was a volunteer teaching Korean to immigrants at the center.

그는 사회 복지관에서 이민자들에게 한국어를 가르치는 자원봉사자였다. 

 

I was interested but was not sure I could do it.

나는 관심이 있긴 했지만 내가 그 일을 할 수 있을지 확신이 없었다. 

 

I had always felt nervous about meeting people from other countries.

나는 항상 다른 나라 사람들을 만나는 것에 대해 긴장했다. 

 

However, my brother encouraged me, so I decided to give it a try.

그러나 오빠가 나를 격려해 주었기에 한번 해 보기로 결심했다.

 

On the day when I first started volunteering, the students gave me a warm welcome.

내가 처음으로 자원봉사를 시작했던 날, 학생들은 나를 따뜻하게 환영해 주었다. 

 

Some said, "Hwan-yeong-hae-yo."

몇몇은 “환영해요.”라고 말했다. 

 

My brother introduced me to the class and asked me to help a student named Kumari.

오빠는 나를 반 학생들에게 소개해 주었고, ‘Kumari’라는 이름의 학생을 도와주라고 부탁했다. 

 

She came from Nepal. She bowed to me saying, "Namaste," with her palms held together.

그녀는 네팔 출신이다. 그녀는 나에게 “나마스떼”라고 말하며 합장하고 인사를 했다. 

 

When I helped her write down words in Korean, her eyes lit up with joy.

내가 그녀가 한글로 낱말 쓰는 것을 도와주었을 때, 그녀의 눈은 기쁨으로 빛났다. 

 

She was enthusiastic about learning Korean, and I felt great joy in teaching.

그녀는 한국어를 배우는데 열정적이었고, 나는 가르치는 데 큰 기쁨을 느꼈다. 

 

This led me to keep coming back to class. Soon we became friends and learned more about each other.

이것이 나를 계속 수업에 돌아오도록 이끌었다. 곧 우리는 친구가 되었고 서로에 대해 더 알게 되었다. 

 

She said she was learning Korean to read books to her son.

그녀는 아들에게 책을 읽어 주기 위해 한국어를 배우고 있다고 말했다. 

 

I was pleased that I could help make her dream come true.

나는 내가 그녀의 꿈이 실현되도록 하는 것을 도울 수 있어서 기뻤다. 

 

When the vacation finished, I could not do the volunteer work any longer.

방학이 끝나자 나는 더 이상 자원봉사를 할 수 없게 되었다. 

 

On the last day, she gave me Himalayan black tea with a thank you note written in Korean.

마지막 날, 그녀는 나에게 한글로 쓰인 감사 편지와 함께 히말라야 홍차를 주었다. 

 

I still get in touch with Kumari through email.

나는 여전히 전자 우편으로 Kumari와 연락을 하고 있다. 

 

Looking back, the volunteering experience taught me a lot.

되돌아보면, 자원 봉사 경험은 나에게 많은 것을 가르쳐 주었다. 

 

I came to understand people from different cultures better.

나는 다른 문화에서 온 사람들을 더 잘 이해하게 되었다. 

 

Also, I experienced the joy of teaching.

또한, 나는 가르치는 기쁨을 경험했다. 

 

Next vacation, I want to go back to the center and feel that joy again.

다음 방학에, 나는 사회 복지관으로 돌아가서 그 기쁨을 다시 느끼고 싶다.

I love drawing.

나는 그림 그리는 것을 좋아한다. 

 

My dream is to make the world a better place through my paintings.

나의 꿈은 내 그림을 통해 세상을 더 나은 곳으로 만드는 것이다. 

 

When I became a high school student, I joined an art club.

내가 고등학생이 되었을 때, 나는 미술 동아리에 가입했다. 

 

The club ran a wall-painting volunteer program that I got the chance to participate in.

그 동아리는 벽화 그리기 자원봉사 프로그램을 운영하고 있어서 나는 그 프로그램에 참여할 기회를 얻게 되었다. 

 

Last Saturday was "volunteering day."

지난 토요일은 ‘자원봉사의 날’이었다. 

 

We went to an elementary school in a small town. Its wall was white and clean.

우리는 작은 마을에 있는 한 초등학교에 갔다. 그 학교의 벽은 하얗고 깨끗했다. 

 

Actually, some other volunteers had already painted it white.

사실 몇몇 다른 자원봉사자들이 이미 벽을 하얗게 칠해 놓았던 것이다. 

 

The wall looked like a big canvas.

그 벽은 큰 캔버스처럼 보였다. 

 

First, some people made sketches, and then others painted them.

먼저, 몇몇 사람들이 밑그림을 그렸고, 다른 사람들은 색칠했다. 

 

The theme of the painting was "Garden of Dreams."

그림의 주제는 ‘꿈의 정원’이었다. 

 

I painted some butterflies, honey bees, and flowers.

나는 나비와 꿀벌, 꽃에 색칠했다. 

 

Working as a group was a lot of fun.

단체로 작업하는 것은 아주 즐거웠다. 

 

Although it was hot, we did not mind.

덥긴 했지만, 우리는 개의치 않았다. 

 

We tried our best to complete the picture.

우리는 그림을 완성하기 위해 최선을 다했다. 

 

When the picture was finished, I was amazed.

그림이 완성됐을 때, 나는 깜짝 놀랐다. 

 

Our collaboration had turned the empty wall into a beautiful, exciting garden.

우리의 공동 작업이 텅 비어 있던 벽을 아름답고 신나는 정원으로 바꾸었다. 

 

One by one, the little children of the town gathered to see the picture.

한 명 한 명, 동네의 아이들이 그림을 보려고 모여들었다. 

 

They looked so happy. I was delighted to see their happy faces.

그들은 무척 행복해 보였다. 나는 그들의 행복한 표정을 보니 기뻤다. 

 

I felt like I was one step closer to my dream.

나는 내 꿈에 한 걸음 더 다가간 것처럼 느꼈다.

I had always been interested in volunteering, but I did not know what I could do.

나는 항상 자원봉사에 관심이 있었지만, 내가 무엇을 할 수 있는지 알지 못했다. 

 

One day, when I was watching TV, I learned about "voice volunteering."

어느 날, TV를 보다가, ‘음성 자원봉사’에 대해 알게 되었다. 

 

It meant making audio books for the blind by reading the books aloud.

그것은 책을 낭독하여 시각 장애인을 위한 오디오 책을 만드는 것을 뜻했다. 

 

I said to myself, "That's what I've been looking for!"

나는 스스로에게 “저게 바로 내가 찾던 거야!”라고 말했다. 

 

The next day I went to the community center and took a quick test in the recording room.

다음 날 나는 주민 센터로 갔고, 녹음실에서 간단한 테스트를 받았다. 

 

Luckily, I passed it.

나는 운 좋게 테스트에 통과했다. 

 

A few days later, I came back to the recording room where I had taken the test.

며칠 후, 나는 테스트를 받았었던 녹음실로 돌아왔다. 

 

I got some training on accurate pronunciation before recording.

My first job was to read a history book for high school students.

I started reading the book with my heart beating very fast.

I was very nervous but tried my best to read naturally.

My recorded voice sounded a little strange to me.

But the recording manager said that I had done well.

하지만 녹음 담당자께서는 잘했다고 말씀하셨다. 

 

Since then, I have been doing volunteer work once a week.

그때 이후, 나는 일주일에 한 번씩 자원봉사를 해 오고 있다. 

 

I am enjoying reading the books more and more.

나는 책 낭독을 점점 더 즐기고 있다. 

 

Plus, I take joy in helping the blind.

뿐만 아니라, 나는 시각 장애인들을 돕는 데 기쁨을 느낀다. 

 

I hope more people will volunteer and experience the same pleasure I do.

나는 더 많은 사람들이 자원봉사를 하며 나와 같은 기쁨을 경험하기를 바란다.
