The Virtual Choir: Sing Alone, Sing Along

가상 합창단: 혼자 노래하고, 함께 노래하라

 

A red curtain slowly opens.

붉은 커튼이 천천히 열린다. 

 

Rows of little screens, showing people of all ages and colors, fill the stage against a dark background.

모든 연령대와 인종의 사람들을 보여 주는 작은 화면들이 줄지어서 어두운 배경을 한 무대를 채운다. 

 

In the center appears a man.

가운데에서 한 남자가 등장한다. 

 

He soon begins conducting and disappears.

그는 곧 지휘를 시작하고 사라진다. 

 

Then the singing images move slowly to the music.

그러고 나면 노래를 부르는 이미지들이 음악에 따라 천천히 움직인다. 

 

Some of them are zoomed in to show different faces.

그 이미지들 중 몇 개는 서로 다른 얼굴들을 보여 주기 위해 확대된다. 

 

There is neither an orchestra nor an audience.

오케스트라도 청중도 없다. 

 

The singers have never met each other or practiced together.

노래를 부르는 사람들은 서로 만나 본 적도 없고 함께 연습을 해 본 적도 없다. 

 

Yet a song called "Lux Aurumque" is performed by a beautiful mix of voices.

그럼에도 불구하고 Lux Aurumque라고 불리는 노래는 아름다운 목소리가 섞여 공연된다. 

 

This is a "virtual choir."

이것이 ‘가상 합창단’이다.

 

The virtual choir was Eric Whitacre's idea.

가상 합창단은 Eric Whitacre의 아이디어였다. 

 

One day in 2009, the modern music composer was told by a friend about a young fan.

2009년 어느 날, 그 현대 음악 작곡가는 친구로부터 한 젊은 팬에 관한 이야기를 들었다. 

 

She had videoed herself singing the soprano part of his composition "Sleep" and posted it for him online.

그 팬은 그가 작곡한 Sleep의 소프라노 부분을 부르는 자신의 모습을 비디오로 찍어서 그를 위해 온라인에 게시했다. 

 

In the video, her voice sounded sweet and pure.

비디오 속 그녀의 목소리는 달콤하고 순수했다. 

 

Inspired by the video, Whitacre decided to make a virtual choir.

그 비디오에서 영감을 받아 Whitacre는 가상 합창단을 만들기로 결심했다. 

 

He thought, "If I can get 50 people to sing their parts and post their videos, I can put them together and create something beautiful.

그는 ‘만약 내가 50명의 사람에게 자신의 파트를 노래하고 비디오를 게시하게 할 수 있다면, 나는 그것들을 한데 모아서 아름다운 어떤 것을 만들어 낼 수 있을 거야. 

 

Those who love to sing don't have to be in the same place to perform a choral work together."

노래 부르는 것을 좋아하는 사람들이 함께 합창을 하기 위해 한 곳에 모일 필요는 없어.’라고 생각했다. 

 

Whitacre soon sent out a call to his online fans to record themselves singing and upload their videos.

Whitacre는 곧 그의 온라인 팬들에게 노래를 부르는 자신의 모습을 녹화하고 그 비디오를 전송해 달라고 요청했다. 

 

To make his idea a reality, Whitacre went through several steps.

자신의 생각을 현실로 만들기 위해 Whitacre는 여러 단계를 거쳤다. 

 

First, he asked the fans to download his work "Lux Aurumque."

먼저, 그는 팬들에게 Lux Aurumque라는 자신의 곡을 다운로드 해 달라고 요청했다. 

 

Then he posted a video where he conducted along with piano music.

그러고나서 그는 피아노 음악에 맞춰 지휘를 한 비디오를 게시했다. 

 

The singers watched the video and learned their parts on their own.

노래하는 사람들은 그 비디오를 보고 혼자서 자신의 파트를 익혔다. 

 

Soon 185 singers from 12 countries uploaded their videos.

곧 12개 나라에서 185명의 노래하는 사람들이 자신들의 비디오를 게시했다. 

 

Thanks to the help of Scott Haines, a participant who offered to edit the work, the videos were put together into a single performance.

그 작품의 편집을 제공한 참가자 Scott Haines의 도움 덕분에 그 비디오들은 합쳐져 하나의 공연이 되었다.

 

After months of hard work, this first virtual choir performance was released in March 2010.

몇 달 동안 힘들게 작업한 후에, 이 가상 합창단의 첫 번째 공연이 2010년 3월에 공개되었다. 

 

Whitacre felt strong emotions about the video.

Whitacre는 그 비디오를 보고 격한 감정을 느꼈다. 

 

"I was actually moved to tears when I first saw it.

“그 영상을 처음 봤을 때 저는 정말 감동해서 눈물을 흘렸어요. 

 

These souls, all on their own desert island, sent electronic messages in bottles to each other," he said.

모두 자신만의 무인도에 있던 이 사람들이 전자 메시지를 병에 담아 서로에게 보낸 거죠.”라고 그는 말했다. 

 

Little did he know that people would go to any length to connect with each other, no matter where they were.

사람들이 어디에 있든지 간에 서로 이어지기 위해 무엇이든 할 것이라는 것을 그는 전혀 알지 못했다. 

 

The virtual choir was a marriage of art, connectivity, and technology.

가상 합창단은 예술, 연결, 그리고 기술의 결합이었다. 

 

A little later, singers posted stories about their experiences.

얼마 되지 않아, 노래를 했던 사람들은 자신들의 경험에 관한 이야기를 온라인에 올렸다. 

 

One singer said, "My sister and I used to sing in choirs together when we were younger.

한 사람은 “언니와 저는 어렸을 때 합창단에서 함께 노래를 부르곤 했어요. 

 

We now live in different parts of the world.

우리는 지금 세계의 다른 곳에서 살고 있죠. 

 

Without the virtual choir, we wouldn't have been able to sing together again and renew our bond."

이 가상 합창단이 없었더라면 우리는 다시 노래를 함께 부를 수 없었을 것이고 우리의 유대도 다시 시작될 수 없었을 거예요.”라고 말했다. 

 

Another said, "When I told my husband that I was going to do this, he told me that I didn't have the voice for it.

또 다른 이는 “내가 남편에게 이 일을 할 것이라고 말했을 때, 남편은 제가 그럴 만한 목소리를 갖고 있지 않다고 말했죠. 

 

But I wanted to participate despite what he said.

하지만 그가 한 말에도 불구하고 전 참여하고 싶었어요. 

 

I live in the Great Alaskan Bush, far away from everyone.

저는 사람들과 매우 멀리 떨어진 Great Alaskan Bush에 살고 있어요. 

 

The virtual choir is what connects me with the world.

가상 합창단은 저를 세상과 연결시켜 준 것입니다. 

 

Being part of this choir is as good as meeting old friends."

이 합창단의 일원이 된 것은 오랜 친구를 만나는 것만큼이나 좋네요.”라고 말했다. 

 

Many others appreciated the experience, saying it was great to know they were part of a worldwide community of people.

다른 많은 사람들은 그들이 전 세계 사람들의 공동체의 일부라는 것을 알게 된 것은 멋진 일이었다고 말하면서, 그 경험을 하게 된 것에 감사를 표했다. 

 

Some even met each other in person and became friends.

심지어 그들 중 몇몇은 직접 만나 친구가 되었다.

 

The virtual choir idea has continued to grow since that first performance.

첫 번째 공연 이후로 가상 합창단 아이디어는 계속되고 있다. 

 

Thousands of people have participated in several big projects.

One of them was the 2013 performance of "Fly to Paradise."

It was shown at Buckingham Palace to mark Elizabeth II's 60th year as Queen of the U.K.

It contained about 8,400 videos from 101 different countries.

그 공연은 101개국에서 온 8,400여 개의 비디오를 담고 있었다. 

 

Also among the projects was the performance by a virtual youth choir.

또한 프로젝트들 중에는 가상 청년 합창단 공연도 있었다. 

 

It featured 2,292 young singers from 80 countries, including four from Korea.

그 공연에는 4명의 한국인을 포함한 80개국의 2,292명의 젊은 가수들이 출연했다. 

 

These singers again showed how technology could be used to bring people together.

이 가수들은 기술이 어떻게 사람들을 하나로 모으는 데 사용될 수 있는지를 다시 한 번 보여 주었다.
