Why can a bird stand on a power line and not get shocked?

새는 왜 전깃줄에 앉아 있어도 감전되지 않을까?

 

This has to do with how electricity works.

이것은 전기는 어떻게 작용하는가와 관련이 있다.

 

Electricity flows between two points that differ in voltage.

전기는 전압이 다른 두 지점 사이를 흐른다.

 

Since there is no voltage difference between the bird's feet, electricity does not flow through the bird's body.

새의 발 사이에 전압이 다르지 않기 때문에 새의 몸으로 전기가 흐르지 않는다.

 

If a bird touches two wires that differ in voltage, however, electricity will flow through the bird and will probably give it an electric shock.

그러나 만약 새가 전압이 다른 두 선을 건드리면 전기가 새를 통과하게 되고 아마도 감전될 것이다.

 

If your kite or balloon got caught on a power line and you touched the string, what would happen?

만약 여러분의 연이나 풍선이 전깃줄에 걸리고 여러분이 그 줄을 만진다면, 무슨 일이 벌어질까?

 

Of course, electricity would travel down the string and into your body on its way to the ground.

당연히, 전기가 그 줄을 타고 흘러 여러분의 몸을 통해 땅에 전달될 것이다.

 

This would mean a serious shock!

이것은 심각한 감전을 의미할 것이다!

 

So keep in mind that you must not fly kites near power lines.

그러므로, 여러분은 전깃줄 근처에서 연을 날리지 말아야 한다는 사실을 명심하라.
