A Survival Story from Hurricane Sandy

허리케인 샌디에서의 생존 이야기

 

Every year, newspapers from around the world cover huge ocean storms that hit different regions.

매년, 전 세계로부터의 신문은 다른 지역을 강타한 큰 해양 폭풍을 다룬다. 

 

These storms leave thousands of people injured or dead, while forcing others to run away from their homes.

이런 폭풍들은 수천 명의 사상자를 남기는 한편, 다른 이들을 그들의 집에서 떠나게 만든다. 

 

They also give rise to amazing stories of survival.

그들은 또한 놀라운 생존의 이야기를 낳는다. 

 

Here is a story of a young man who survived Hurricane Sandy, one of the most violent storms ever to hit the United States.

미국을 강타한 가장 강력한 폭풍 중 하나인 허리케인 Sandy에서 살아남은 한 젊은이에 대한 이야기가 있다. 

 

A lady named Christine at Toms River, New Jersey, where the hurricane hit hard, was lucky enough to escape from her house before the storm hit.

그 허리케인이 거세게 강타한 뉴저지의 Toms River에서 Christine이라는 이름을 가진 여성은 폭풍이 몰아치기 전에 운 좋게도 그녀의 집에서 도망쳤다. 

 

When she returned to her damaged house, after the storm had passed, she found a note.

Whoever reads this, I'm DYING―I'm 28 years old. My name is Mike.

Christine did not know if Mike survived.

She called the number on the note, but no one answered.

She then posted the note and the story on her SNS.

The sad message made the rounds on social media for some time, before falling into the hands of a local radio station show host.

한 지역의 라디오 쇼 진행사의 수중에 떨어지기 전까지, 그 슬픈 메시지는 얼마동안 소셜 미디어에 돌아다녔다. 

 

After several tries, the radio show host finally located Mike and heard his story.

몇 번의 시도 끝에, 그 라디오 쇼 진행자는 마침내 Mike의 위치를 찾아내었고, 그의 이야기를 들었다. 

 

On the day of the storm, Mike was watching the news on the television when he heard a loud noise outside.

He went to the door to see what the noise was all about.

The water in the street outside his house was high and had risen quickly.

In a moment, the water rose to the level of the door, starting to fill his house.

And then the water carried him back to his kitchen.

The entire house would soon be under water. He realized he had to escape.

집 전체가 곧 수면아래에 잠길 것 같았다. 그는 도망쳐야만 한다는 것을 깨달았다.

 

As he emerged from his house, the current caught him and carried him out to sea.

그가 집 밖으로 나오자, 물살이 그를 잡아 바다로 보내버렸다. 

 

He tried to swim back to an unflooded house, but the current was too strong and the waves took him out to sea again and again.

그는 물에 침수되지 않은 집으로 수영을 해서 돌아가려고 노력했으나, 물살이 너무 강했고, 파도가 그를 바다로 계속해서 다시 데리고 나왔다. 

 

After hours of fighting against the water, he was finally able to find his way to Christine's house.

몇 시간의 물과의 사투 후, 그는 마침내 Christine의 집으로 가는 길을 찾을 수 있었다. 

 

Shivering with cold, Mike wrapped his body in the blankets that were on the chair.

추위에 몸을 떨며, Mike는 의자에 있던 이불들로 몸을 감쌌다. 

 

He was thirsty because he had swallowed so much salt water.

그는 소금물을 너무 많이 삼켰기 때문에 목이 말랐다. 

 

He could find nothing to drink.

Mike picked up the phone to call his family, but it did not work.

The water was now flowing quickly into Christine's house.

He was now too weak to swim, having already swum several hours to find his way back to land after being washed out to sea.

그는 바다로 쓸려 떠내려간 뒤로, 육지로 되돌아오기 위해 이미 몇 시간을 수영했기에, 이제는 힘이 없어서 수영을 할 수 없었다. 

 

Sensing the end was near, Mike wrote the note that Christine found.

끝이 다가왔음을 느끼고, Mike는 Christine이 발견한 메모를 썼다. 

 

Finishing the note, Mike almost gave up on his life, when he saw through the window a boat approaching.

쪽지를 다 쓰고, Mike는 그의 목숨을 거의 포기했을 때, 창문을 통해 보트가 다가오는 것을 봤다. 

 

"Help!", he shouted with all his remaining strength.

“살려주세요!” 그는 남아있는 그의 모든 힘을 짜내 소리 쳤다. 

 

The man on the boat heard the voice and finally Mike was rescued. 

보트에 있던 사람이 그 목소리를 들었고, 마침내 Mike는 구조되었다. 

 

He took Mike home and gave him food and warm clothes.

그는 Mike를 집으로 데려가, 그에게 음식과 따뜻한 옷을 주었다. 

 

Survival stories like Mike's make people appreciate what they have when they are safe and sound at home with their family, leading their daily lives.

Mike의 이야기처럼 살아남은 이야기는 사람들이 그들의 일상생활을 이끌어가면서, 그들의 가족과 함께 집에서 무사히 있을 때 그들이 가진 것을 감사하도록 만들어준다.

 

How Do Hurricanes Form?

허리케인은 어떻게 형성되는가? 

 

Hurricanes form only over ocean water that has a temperature of 26 or more degrees Celsius.

허리케인은 섭씨 26도 혹은 그 이상의 온도를 가진 바닷물 위에서만 형성된다. 

 

This is why they are common in the tropics where water temperatures are high all year round.

이것이 바로 1년 내내 수온이 높은 열대지방에서 허리케인이 흔한 이유이다. 

 

When warm air rises, creating low pressure over the water surface, cooler air from nearby enters to fill the area.

따뜻한 공기가 올라갈 때, 수면에 저기압이 형성되면서 근처의 더 차가운 공기가 그 지역을 메우기 위해 들어온다. 

 

As this process continues, the resulting clouds begin to expand, giving rise to rains and thunderstorms.

그 과정이 계속 되면서, 그 결과로 초래된 구름은 확장되기 시작하여, 비와 뇌우를 발생시킨다. 

 

The thunderstorms then begin to move in circles around a central point, due to the rotation of Earth.

그때, 지구의 자전 때문에, 그 뇌우는 중심점을 주위로 원을 그리며 움직이기 시작한다. 

 

This point is called a tropical depression.

이 지점을 열대성 저기압이라고 부른다. 

 

As the tropical depression moves over warmer waters, the clouds expand and the winds begin to build up speed, becoming a "tropical storm."

열대성 저기압은 더 따뜻한 물 위로 움직이면서, 구름은 확장하고 바람은 속도를 더 높이기 시작하여 “열대성 태풍”이 된다. 

 

As the storm grows, the wind increases, achieving speeds of as much as 118 kilometers per hour.

폭풍이 커질수록, 바람이 증가하여 시속 118 킬로미터에 이른다. 

 

At this point the storm officially becomes a hurricane.

이 시점에서 이 폭풍은 공식적으로 허리케인이 된다. 

 

It is now a huge storm that can be seen from space.

그것은 이제 우주에서도 볼 수 있을 만큼 거대한 폭풍이 된다. 

 

Interestingly enough, the storm has a calm center, which is called the "eye."

흥미롭게도, 그 폭풍은 고요한 중심부를 갖고 있는데, 그것은 “눈”이라 불린다.
