Lion Lights

사자 등불 

 

Richard Turere was an eleven-year-old boy in Kenya when one morning, upon entering the stable, he found that one of his family cows had been killed.

리처드 투레레는 케냐에 사는 열한 살 소년이었다. 어느 날 아침 축사에 들어갔을 때 Richard는 암소 한 마리가 죽은 것을 발견했다. 

 

Lion attack! Not just Richard's family, but many of their neighbors were putting up with the same problem.

사자의 습격이구나! Richard의 가족뿐만 아니라 많은 이웃도 같은 문제로 받는 고통을 견디고 있었다. 

 

Some people who had lost animals to the lions wanted to kill the lions to protect their remaining cows and goats.

사자에게 가축을 잃은 사람들 일부는 남아 있는 암소와 염소를 지키기 위해 사자를 죽이고 싶어 하기도 했다. 

 

That, however, would have brought another problem, for lions are the top tourist attraction in Kenya and are protected by law.

그러나 사자 사냥은 또 다른 문제를 불러일으킬 것이었다. 왜냐하면 사자는 관광객이 케냐를 찾는 가장 큰 이유이고 법으로 보호를 받고 있었기 때문이었다. 

 

In addition, their numbers are decreasing.

게다가 사자 숫자가 감소하고 있기도 했다. 

 

Members of Richard's family took turns guarding the cows in their stable at night.

Richard의 가족은 밤에 순번을 정해 축사에서 암소를 지켰다. 

 

Still, when everyone was asleep, lions were able to get through the fence.

그럼에도 불구하고 모두가 잠든 밤이면 사자가 담장을 넘어 습격해왔다. 

 

Richard first set up a series of torches on the fence.

처음에 Richard는 담장에 횃불을 여러 개 매달아 보았다. 

 

He knew lions were afraid of fire.

사자는 불을 무서워한다는 것을 알고 있었다. 

 

What he did not know was how smart lions are.

사자가 얼마나 영리한지는 알지 못했다. 

 

When the lions found out that no one was around, they entered the stable and attacked the cows anyway.

사람이 없다는 것을 아는 순간 사자들은 축사에 들어와 암소를 공격했다. 

 

Next, Richard set up scarecrows. They were of no use, either.

다음으로 Richard는 허수아비를 세워보았다. 역시 소용없었다. 

 

He had to find a way to stop the lions before he lost another cow!

또 한 마리의 암소를 잃기 전에 사자를 막을 방법을 찾아야 했다.

 

Richard observed the lions' behavior.

Richard는 사자의 행동을 관찰했다. 

 

One night, he took a torch and walked around the stable.

어느 날 밤 Richard는 횃불을 들고 축사 주위를 걷고 있었다. 

 

He sensed that lions were outside in the dark, but they would not come near if they thought somebody was walking around to protect the cows.

사자들이 어둠 속에 숨어 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있었지만 소를 지키기 위해 사람이 횃불을 들고 걸어 다니는 동안에는 다가오지 않을 것이다. 

 

Then he had an idea―a moving torch!

그때 한 가지 생각이 떠올랐다. 움직이는 횃불! 

 

To lions, a moving torch could only mean that a person was holding it, which would stop them from approaching the stable.

사자에게 움직이는 횃불은 사람이 들고 있다는 의미일 수밖에 없고, 그러면 사자가 축사에 접근하는 것을 막을 수 있을 것이었다. 

 

How, he thought to himself, could he make it appear that a torch was moving?

Richard는 생각했다. 횃불이 움직이는 것처럼 보이게 하려면 어떻게 해야 할까? 

 

After lots of trial and error, Richard finally created a system of flashing LED lights, powered by an old car battery that was charged by a solar panel.

수많은 시행착오 끝에 Richard는 마침내 깜빡이는 LED 전구로 된 장치를 만들었다. 이 전구는 태양전지로 충전되는 낡은 자동차 배터리에서 나오는 전기로 켜졌다. 

 

Richard set the lights up along the fence.

Richard는 담장을 따라 전구를 설치했다. 

 

At night, the lights could be seen from outside the stable and took turns flashing, which appeared as if people were moving around with torches.

밤이 되자 축사 밖에서 전구 불빛이 보였다. 차례대로 깜박이는 불빛은 마치 사람이 횃불을 들고 움직이는 것처럼 보였다. 

 

Never again did lions cross Richard's fence.

그날 이후 Richard네 담장을 넘는 사자는 없었다. 

 

Richard called his system Lion Lights.

Richard는 이 장치를 사자 퇴치 횃불이라고 불렀다. 

 

This simple and practical device did no harm to lions, so human beings, cattle, and lions were finally able to make peace with one another.

이 간단하고 실용적인 장치는 사자에게 아무 해를 끼치지 않기 때문에 사람과 가축과 사자가 마침내 평화롭게 지낼 수 있게 되었다. 

 

Lion Lights also work for other wild animals.

사자 퇴치 횃불은 다른 야생동물에게도 효과가 있다. 

 

Richard's Lion Lights are now being used all over Kenya.

Richard의 사자 퇴치 횃불은 현재 케냐 전역에서 사용되고 있다.

 

Sensor Socks

센서 양말 

 

Kenneth Shinozuka was a child when a police officer brought his grandfather home.

케네스 시노즈카가 어렸을 때 경찰이 Kenneth의 할아버지를 집으로 데려온 적이 있었다. 

 

The old man had been found wandering aimlessly on the street. He did not remember when and how he had gotten there.

거리를 배회하는 할아버지를 경찰이 발견했는데, 할아버지는 언제 어떻게 거기 왔는지 기억하지 못했다. 

 

It turned out that he had Alzheimer's, a brain disease that slowly takes away a patient's memory and ability to think.

결국 할아버지가 환자의 기억과 사고력을 서서히 빼앗아가는 뇌질환인  알츠하이머를 앓고 있다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 

 

Going to middle school, Kenneth often looked after his grandfather.

중학교에 다니며 Kenneth는 종종 할아버지를 돌보았다. 

 

When his grandfather got up and started to wander, Kenneth followed him to protect him from danger.

할아버지가 자리에서 일어나 배회하기 시작하면 Kenneth는 할아버지를 위험으로부터 보호하기 위해 따라다녔다. 

 

Following his grandfather, he wondered whether he could do anything more to help him.

할아버지를 따라다니며 Kenneth는 할아버지를 돕기 위해 더 할 수 있는 일이 있는지 궁금했다. 

 

His grandfather was safe when he stayed in his room.

할아버지는 방에 머무는 동안은 안전했다. 

 

The problem was that there was no way of knowing where his grandfather would go when he left the safety of his room.

문제는 할아버지가 언제 안전한 방에서 나가는지 알 방법이 없다는 것이었다. 

 

That required that someone stay with him all the time.

그러한 이유로 누군가 항상 할아버지 곁에 있어야 했다. 

 

One night, a spark of hope crossed Kenneth's mind.

어느 날 밤 희망의 불꽃이 Kenneth의 뇌리를 스쳐갔다. 

 

When Kenneth watched as his grandfather got up and stepped down onto the floor as usual, an idea struck him.

할아버지가 평소처럼 일어나 방바닥을 딛는 것을 보자 한 가지 생각이 떠오른 것이었다. 

 

To walk, a person must first step down on their feet.

걸으려면 발로 디뎌야 한다. 

 

If a patient's steps make loud noises, as if walking in wooden shoes, it will wake up the caregiver.

만일 걸을 때 나막신을 신은 것처럼 큰 소리가 난다면 돌보는 사람을 깨울 수 있을 것이다. 

 

But it will also wake up others who are sleeping nearby.

그러나 그러면 가까이에서 자고 있는 다른 사람들도 깨울 것이다. 

 

"No, it's not practical," Kenneth thought.

“아니야, 그것은 실용적이지 못해.” Kenneth는 생각했다. 

 

Was it possible to send some kind of signal only to the person you wanted to wake up?

깨우고 싶은 사람에게만 모종의 신호를 보낼 수는 없을까? 

 

There must be some sensors for this purpose.

이런 용도의 센서가 있을 것이다. 

 

How could the signals be received?

그러면 신호는 어떻게 받을까? 

 

Kenneth's thinking started to speed up.

Kenneth의 생각이 점점 빨라지기 시작했다.

 

He finally came up with a system of socks with sensors in the heels and a smartphone working as a monitor.

그가 마침내 생각해낸 것은 발꿈치에 센서가 붙은 양말과 모니터로 사용되는 스마트폰을 결합한 장치였다. 

 

The sensors had to be thin enough to be comfortable on the bottom of a foot.

센서는 발꿈치에 닿아도 편안할 만큼 얇아야 했다. 

 

After tries with several different materials, he ended up with a film sensor operating with a small battery.

여러 다른 재료들로 시험한 끝에 Kenneth는 작은 배터리로 작동하는 필름 센서를 사용하기로 했다. 

 

Next, he studied programming to code an app that would transform a smartphone into a monitor.

다음으로 그는 스마트폰을 모니터로 변신시켜주는 앱을 코딩하기 위해 프로그래밍을 연구했다. 

 

The system Kenneth eventually created worked as it was supposed to.

Kenneth가 드디어 만든 장치는 의도대로 작동했다. 

 

When his grandfather started to walk, the sensors sent signals to the paired smartphone, raising an alarm.

할아버지가 걷기 시작하자 연결된 스마트폰에 센서가 신호를 보내어 알람이 울리게 했다. 

 

And then the smartphone worked as a monitor that showed his grandfather's movements.

그러자 스마트폰은 모니터로 작동하여 할아버지의 움직임을 보여주었다. 

 

Kenneth's sensor socks were recognized at a science fair.

Kenneth의 센서 양말은 과학경진대회에서 상을 받았다. 

 

He planned to improve the device and hand it out to Alzheimer's patients as needed.

그(Kenneth)는 이 장치를 개선하여 알츠하이머 환자들에게 나누어줄 계획을 세웠다. 

 

Richard and Kenneth tried to draw creative ideas from observation and turn them into reality.

Richard와 Kenneth는 관찰을 통해 창의적인 생각을 끄집어내려고 노력했고 그것을 실제로 구현했다. 

 

Richard's careful observation of lions' behavior eventually brought peace to his village.

Richard는 사자를 세심히 관찰하여 결과적으로 마을에 평화를 가져왔다. 

 

Kenneth's observation of his grandfather's wandering led to the creation of a device that helps people with Alzheimer's.

Kenneth는 할아버지가 배회하는 것을 관찰하여 알츠하이머 환자를 돕는 장치를 개발했다. 

 

If you observe your surroundings with fresh eyes, something great can happen.

우리도 주위를 새로운 눈으로 관찰하면 무엇인가 멋진 일이 생길 수도 있다.
