A Foolish Doctor

바보 의사

A patient was uneasy.

환자는 불안했다. 

 

His surgery had gone well, and he had fully recovered, but he was not allowed to go home.

수술은 잘 되었고 몸은 완전히 회복되었지만 집에 갈 수 없었다. 

 

The problem was that he did not have money to pay the hospital bill.

문제는 그가 치료비를 낼 돈이 없다는 것이었다. 

 

His wife, standing next to him, was also very worried.

옆에 선 환자의 부인 역시 근심 어린 표정이었다. 

 

The man was a farmer, and it was planting season.

환자는 농부였고 때는 모내기철이었다. 

 

If he did not return to his farm soon, he would have nothing to harvest in the fall.

그가 당장 돌아가 논을 돌보지 않으면 가을에 아무것도 추수할 수 없을 것이었다. 

 

What should he do?

어떻게 해야 하나? 

 

After much hesitation, he went to Dr. Jang's office, the director of the hospital.

몇 번이고 망설인 끝에 그는 병원장 장 박사의 사무실로 갔다. 

 

"They won't let me go home, even though I told them I would pay the bill after the harvest. They don't believe me."

“병원에서 집에 못 가게 합니다. 가을에 추수하면 갚겠다고 했는데도 말이죠. 내 말을 믿지 않습니다.” 

 

Dr. Jang thought for a while.

장 박사는 잠시 생각에 잠겼다. 

 

He had seen similar cases before.

그는 비슷한 경우를 전에도 보아 왔다. 

 

In such cases, he usually picked up the patient's bill, not expecting to be paid back.

그럴 때 그는 보통 돌려받을 것을 기대하지 않은 채 환자의 치료비를 내주었다.

 

This time, however, he did not have enough money.

하지만 이번에는 그에게도 돈이 별로 없었다. 

 

All right, he decided.

할 수 없지, 그는 결심했다. 

 

"Tonight, I will leave the back door open. Just leave."

“오늘 밤 뒷문을 열어 놓을테니 떠나시오.” 

 

The patient was at a loss.

환자는 당황했다. 

 

"I can't do that. That would get you into trouble!"

“그럴 순 없습니다. 선생님이 곤란해지시잖아요!” 

 

"The hospital won't let you go until you pay the bill, but you don't have the money. What can you do?

“병원에서는 치료비를 내기 전에는 보내주지 않을 텐데 당신은 돈이 없지 않소. 어떻게 하겠소? 

 

You have to go to your farm for your family. It can't be helped."

가족을 살리려면 논에 가봐야 하지 않소. 이 방법 밖에 없어요.” 

 

Later at night, when other patients had gone to bed and most of the staff had gone home, the farmer and his wife quietly approached the back door.

밤 늦게, 다른 환자들이 잠들고 직원들이 대부분 퇴근한 시간에 농부와 그의 부인은 조용히 뒷문으로 다가갔다. 

 

When they opened the door carefully, they were surprised to find Dr. Jang standing outside.

조심스레 문을 열었을 때 그들은 장 박사가 밖에 서 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 

 

He handed the man some money.

장 박사는 농부에게 약간의 돈을 건네주었다. 

 

"It's not much, but you'll need it to take the bus home."

“얼마 안 되지만 차비가 필요할 거요.” 

 

The farmer and his wife were speechless, weeping and thanking him.

농부와 그의 부인은 말없이 눈물을 흘리며 장 박사에게 감사를 표했다.

 

Jang Gi Ryeo, a doctor and social worker, was born in Yongcheon, Pyeonganbuk-do in 1911.

의사이자 사회사업가였던 장기려는 1911년 평안북도 용천에서 태어났다. 

 

He was working at a hospital in Pyeongyang when the Korean War broke out.

한국전쟁이 발발했을 때 그는 평양의 한 병원에 근무하고 있었다. 

 

He barely escaped from the war and arrived in Busan.

그는 간신히 피신하여 부산에 도착했다. 

 

One son had accompanied him, but he had to leave the rest of his family behind.

아들 하나는 데리고 왔지만 나머지 가족은 남겨두고 올 수밖에 없었다. 

 

With waves of people escaping from the war, the city was crowded and had little order.

피난민들이 밀물처럼 들이닥친 그 도시(부산)는 혼잡하고 무질서했다. 

 

Hurriedly built houses filled every corner of the city, as people tried to survive each day as it came.

사람들이 하루하루 살아남으려고 애쓸 때 급조한 집들이 도시 구석구석을 채웠다. 

 

Few people would go to hospitals when they were sick, and when they did, they often didn't get much help.

아파도 병원을 찾는 사람은 드물었고, 찾는다 해도 별 도움을 받지 못했다. 

 

There were too few hospitals and doctors.

병원과 의사가 너무 적었기 때문이었다. 

 

Also, most people who were sick were too poor to pay their medical bills.

게다가 환자 대부분이 너무 가난하여 치료비를 낼 수 없었다. 

 

They just put up with their illnesses and many of them died.

그들은 그저 아파도 참았고 그 중 많은 사람이 목숨을 잃었다. 

 

It broke Dr. Jang's heart every time he saw people suffering from sickness without being treated.

병으로 고생해도 치료를 받지 못하는 사람들을 볼 때마다 장 박사는 마음이 아팠다. 

 

He wanted to help them, but he did not have the resources.

그는 돕고 싶었지만 재원이 없었다. 

 

How and where to start?

어떻게 어디서부터 시작해야 할까? 

 

The U.S. army that was in Busan fighting with the UN forces answered his repeated request.

당시 유엔군과 함께 부산에 주둔해 있던 미국 군대가 그의 거듭된 요청을 받아들였다. 

 

They provided him with three field tents and some medicine, with which he and a few helpers set up a free clinic.

그들은 세 개의 야전텐트와 약간의 의약품을 제공했고 그것으로 장 박사와 몇몇 봉사자들은 무료 진료소를 차렸다. 

 

Word of the clinic spread, and new patients arrived every day.

진료소가 생겼다는 소식이 퍼지자 새로운 환자들이 매일 찾아왔다. 

 

At first it was twenty per day, then fifty, then one hundred....

처음에는 하루에 스무 명이더니 곧 오십 명, 백 명이 되었다. 

 

Dr. Jang built an operating table with boards and performed surgeries.

장 박사는 나무판자로 수술대를 만들고 수술을 했다.

 

Soon Dr. Jang's free clinic faced a problem―the growing waves of patients made it difficult for his clinic to treat them all.

장 박사의 무료 진료소는 곧 어려움에 처하게 되었다. 밀려드는 환자들을 다 치료할 수 없게 된 것이다. 

 

By the end of the war, his clinic had treated more than 200,000 patients for free, but he was not able to maintain his clinic that way any longer.

전쟁이 끝날 때까지 장 박사의 진료소는 이십만 명 이상의 환자를 무료로 치료했지만, 그런 식으로는 더 이상 유지할 수 없었다. 

 

He had to find a way to continue treating poor patients, but he also needed to buy medical supplies and pay the staff at the clinic.

가난한 환자들을 계속 치료하기 위해서는 방법을 찾아야 했고, 또한 의약품을 구입하고 직원에게 봉급도 주어야 했다. 

 

After discussing the matter at length with his staff, he set up the Blue Cross Medical Association, the first medical insurance system in Korea.

이 문제에 대해 직원들과 깊이 의논한 끝에 장 박사는 한국 최초의 의료 보험인 청십자 의료 보험 조합을 설립했다. 

 

Over the next twenty years, the organization grew and Dr. Jang was able to help thousands of patients, some who could pay and others who could not.

그 후 이십 년 동안 조합은 확대 되었고 장 박사는 수천 명의 환자를 도울 수 있었으며, 그 중에는 진료비를 낼 수 있었던 환자도 있었지만 그러지 못한 환자도 있었다. 

 

Although his patients were his main objects of devotion, Dr. Jang had long been missing what was most important in his life: his wife.

환자들이 장 박사의 주요 헌신 대상이었지만 그의 삶에서 가장 중요한 헌신 대상은 오랫동안 만나지 못하고 있었다. 바로 그의 아내였다. 

 

She was living in Pyeongyang with the rest of their children.

그녀는 나머지 자식들과 함께 평양에 살고 있었다. 

 

After the division of the two Koreas was finalized, they had to live apart.

남북 분단이 확정된 후 그들은 떨어져 살아야만 했다. 

 

Dr. Jang lived in a small home, looking forward to the day when he could once again be with his wife.

장 박사는 소박한 집에 살며 아내와 다시 같이 살 수 있는 날이 오기를 간절히 기다렸다. 

 

When he missed her the most, he would sing songs she had taught him.

아내가 몹시 그리울 때는 그녀가 가르쳐준 노래를 불렀다. 

 

He once had a rare opportunity to meet his wife.

한 번은 아내를 만날 수 있는 귀한 기회가 그에게 찾아왔다. 

 

When the governments of the two Koreas held talks for the reunions of a small number of families separated by the war, he was offered the opportunity to meet her.

남북의 정부가 소규모의 이산가족 만남을 주선하기로 하고 회담을 할 때, 그에게 아내와 만날 기회를 주겠다는 제안이 들어왔다. 

 

It was the government's gesture in recognition of his devotion to attending to needy people.

어려운 사람을 돌보는 데 헌신한 그를 정부가 인정했다는 표시였다. 

 

He surprised government officials, however, by turning down the offer.

그러나 그는 그 제안을 거절함으로써 정부 관리들을 놀라게 했다. 

 

"There are ten million people in the north and the south who want to meet their families.

“남과 북에는 가족을 만나고 싶어하는 사람들이 천 만이 있소. 

 

How can I take such a special offer, leaving so many people behind?"

그 수많은 사람들을 제쳐두고 어찌 나만 그런 특별 대우를 받을 수 있겠소?”

 

At the repeated requests to take the offer, he said at last.

관리들이 거듭 요청하자 그는 마침내 말했다. 

 

"All right then, but with one condition.

“좋소. 하지만 한 가지 조건이 있소. 

 

If I go to Pyeongyang, I will stay with my wife for the rest of my life.

내가 평양에 가면 나는 여생을 아내와 같이 살겠소. 

 

Or I will bring her to Busan. May I do that?"

아니면 아내를 부산으로 데려오겠소. 그래도 되겠소?” 

 

Of course, he could not, so the officials had no choice but to leave him behind.

물론 안 되는 일이었다. 관리들은 할 수 없이 그를 두고 떠나야 했다. 

 

Dr. Jang passed away without seeing his wife and children again.

장 박사는 아내와 자식들을 다시 만나지 못하고 세상을 떠났다. 

 

After his death, a worn out letter was found in his pocket. It was from his wife.

그가 세상을 떠난 후 그의 주머니에서 낡은 편지가 발견되었다. 아내로부터 온 편지였다. 

 

"I knew you were living the life over there that I thought you would, taking care of poor patients, but not of yourself.

“저는 당신이 제가 생각했던 대로 자신은 보살피지 않고 가난한 환자들만 보살피며 거기서 살고 계실 줄 알았어요. 

 

Maybe the reason we are living these long years apart is that we have yet to be with each other again."

우리가 이렇게 오랫동안 헤어져 살아온 이유는 우리가 다시 함께 있을 희망이 있기 때문이겠지요.” 

 

Dr. Jang was an outstanding doctor who had any number of opportunities to become rich and famous.

장 박사는 부유하고 유명해질 수 있는 기회가 많았던 뛰어난 의사였다. 

 

However, his eyes were always fixed on the needy.

그러나 그의 시선은 늘 어려운 사람들에게 고정되어 있었다. 

 

"The heart of medicine is the understanding of patients' suffering," he said.

“의학의 핵심은 환자의 고통을 이해하는 것입니다,”하고 그는 말했다. 

 

People called him a foolish doctor, but he took it as praise.

사람들은 그를 바보 의사라고 불렀지만 그는 이 말을 칭찬으로 생각했다. 

 

"When people call me a fool, I consider my life a success."

“사람들이 나를 바보라고 부르면, 내 인생은 성공한 것입니다.”
