What comes to your mind when you think of water?

물을 생각하면 어떤 게 떠오르나요?

 

You probably know that it is one of the most important substances on our planet.

여러분은 물이 지구에서 가장 중요한 물질 중 하나라는 걸 아마 알고 있을 것입니다.

 

Even so, you may still waste water by letting it run when washing your hands or brushing your teeth.

그렇다 해도, 여러분은 손을 씻거나 이를 닦을 때 물을 흘려보내면서 물을 계속 낭비하고 있을 것입니다.

 

Let's meet Khadija and Hadjara and see what water means to their lives

Khadija와 Hadjara를 만나 그들의 삶에서 물이 무엇을 의미하는지 봅시다.

 

 

How Water Affects Education

물이 교육에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지

 

The story of Khadija, a girl in Bangladesh, shows how running water kept her in school.

방글라데시 소녀인 Khadija의 이야기는 어떻게 수돗물이 그녀를 학교에 있게 해주었는지 보여준다.

 

Like many schools in Bangladesh, Khadija's school used to lack bathrooms with running water.

방글라데시에 있는 많은 학교들처럼, Khadija의 학교도 수돗물이 나오는 화장실이 부족했다(지금은 아니다).

 

Hence, many boys and girls would relieve themselves in the fields close to school, which was quite embarrassing.

그래서 많은 남학생과 여학생은 학교 근처의 들판으로 가서 볼일을 보곤 했는데 그것은 꽤 난처한 일이었다.

 

They also needed a friend to stand guard so that no one would watch them.

그들은 또한 아무도 그들을 보지 못하도록 망을 봐줄 친구가 필요했다.

 

Therefore, to avoid this trouble, Khadija started walking to houses near her school and asking the residents if she could use their bathrooms.

그래서 이 문제를 피하기 위해 Khadija는 학교 근처에 있는 가정집까지 걸어가서 집주인들에게 그 집에 있는 화장실을 써도 되는지 물어보기 시작했다.

 

One day, some kids noticed her doing this and yelled, "Go to some other place to beg to use a bathroom!"

어느 날, 어떤 아이들이 그녀가 이렇게 화장실을 사용하는 것을 알아차리고는 소리쳤다. “화장실을 사용하려고 부탁하려면 다른 데로 가!”

 

Khadija felt so bad that she stopped going to school.

Khadija는 기분이 너무 나빴고 그래서 학교에 가기를 그만두었다.

 

She actually missed several days of school to avoid such torment.

그녀는 그런 골칫거리를 피하고 싶어서 실제로 며칠 정도 학교를 빠졌다.

 

Luckily, now her school has bathrooms with running water thanks to work done by a charity, which means that Khadija doesn't have to deal with the bathroom issue anymore.

다행히도 현재 그녀의 학교는 한 자선 단체의 지원 사업 덕분에 수돗물이 나오는 화장실들을 가지게 되었고, Khadija는 더 이상 화장실 문제를 다루지 않아도 된다.

 

Nowadays, she looks forward to going to school, and she makes sure to attend every day

요즘, 그녀는 학교 가는 것을 기다리며 매일 매일 꼭 학교에 간다.

 

 

The Daily Journey to Get Water

물을 얻으러 가는 매일의 여정

Today, one of the major concerns around the world is the lack of clean water.

오늘날 세계의 주요한 걱정거리 중 하나는 깨끗한 물이 부족한 것이다.

 

Hadjara, a 10-year-old girl, spends much of her time walking and waiting for water.

10살 소녀인 Hadjara는 물을 길으러 걸어가고 기다리는 데 많은 시간을 쓴다.

 

She gets up early four days a week to go collect water for her family.

그녀는 일주일에 4일 일찍 일어나 가족을 위해 물을 길으러 간다.

 

One day, Hadjara set out before dawn for a nearby spring, which is the closest water source to her home.

어느 날, Hadjara는 새벽이 오기도 전에 그녀의 집에서 가장 가까운 수원지인 근처의 샘을 향해 길을 떠났다.

 

Getting there involves a dangerous climb down a 700-foot cliff.

그곳으로 가는 과정에는 700피트의 위험한 절벽을 내려가는 것도 포함되어 있다.

 

She skipped breakfast, thinking she could arrive at the spring before most of the others and have a shorter wait.

그녀는 대부분의 다른 사람들보다 더 전에 그 샘에 도착해서 덜 기다릴 수 있을 것이라 생각했기 때문에 아침을 굶었다.

 

Upon reaching the spring, however, she found out that many others had left before dawn, too.

Even though she waited all day to fill up her pots, she felt lucky that day because she actually got some water.

자신의 항아리를 채우기 위해 하루 종일 기다렸지만 그녀는 물을 실제로 조금 얻을 수 있어서 다행이라고 생각했다.

 

Sometimes the line is too long to get water and she has to walk six more hours to the next closest water source.

때때로 줄이 너무 길어서 물을 얻을 수 없을 때 그녀는 다음으로 가장 가까운 수원지까지 여섯 시간을 더 걸어가야 한다.

 

 

Like Khadija and Hadjara, nearly half the people in the world don't have clean water.

Access to clean water means everything to them because water means health.

물은 건강을 의미하기 때문에 깨끗한 물을 얻을 수 있다는 것은 그들에게 모든 것을 뜻합니다.

 

In the past decade, more children have died from waterborne diseases than people who were killed in the Second World War.

과거 십 년 동안 2차 세계대전으로 죽은 사람들보다 더 많은 아이들이 수인성 질병으로 죽었습니다.

 

Water also means time.

물은 시간을 의미하기도 합니다.

 

People spend 40 billion hours a year walking to get water in Africa alone.

물을 길으러 가는 데 아프리카에서만 1년에 400억 시간을 씁니다.

 

Additionally, water means education.

추가적으로 물은 교육을 의미하기도 합니다.

 

Clean water helps keep kids in school.

깨끗한 물은 아이들이 학교에 있도록 돕습니다.

 

Spending less time collecting water or walking to find a bathroom means they can spend more time in class, creating more opportunity for their future.

물을 길으러 가는 시간이나 화장실을 찾기 위해 다니는 시간을 적게 쓴다는 것은 아이들이 교실에서 더 오랜 시간을 쓸 수 있고, 그들의 미래를 위해 더 많은 기회를 창조해낼 수 있다는 것을 뜻합니다.

 

Ultimately, water can improve their lives and futures.

궁극적으로 물은 그들의 삶과 미래를 더 향상시킬 수 있습니다.
