Debate About Food Art

음식 예술에 관한 토론

 

In groups of four, debate the following topic: Food is art.

네 명씩 모둠을 이루어 다음 주제로 토론하시오. “음식은 예술이다.”

 

1. Groups split up into two teams.

1. 모둠을 두 팀으로 나눈다.

 

One team is the pro side, and the other team is the con side.

한 팀은 찬성 측, 다른 팀은 반대 측이다.

 

Two people in the group should be pros and two people should be cons.

모둠에서 두 사람은 찬성 측, 두 사람은 반대 측이 되어야 한다.

 

2. Teams discuss their position (pro or con) and come up with supporting statements for them.

2. 팀은 각자의 입장(찬성 또는 반대)을 논의하고 그 입장을 뒷받침하는 진술문을 생각해 둔다.

 

3. Teams deliver their statements.

3. 팀은 진술문을 발표한다.

 

4. Students discuss the opposing side's arguments and come up with counter-arguments.

4. 학생들은 상대편의 주장에 관해 논의하고 반론을 생각해 낸다.

 

5. Students deliver counter-arguments.

5. 학생들은 반론을 발표한다.

 

6. Students make closing statements.

찬성: 음식은 예술이다

 

Janet Miranda In my opinion, any creative skill is a form of art.

내 생각에는 어떤 창작적 기술도 다 예술의 한 형식이야.

 

Cooking food needs both a creative mind and art skills.

음식을 요리하는 것은 창의적 마음과 예술적 기교가 모두 필요해.

 

What would you do if you were a chef at a restaurant?

네가 식당의 요리사라면 어떻게 하겠니?

 

You would keep creating new recipes, wouldn't you?

새로운 조리법을 계속 창조할 거야, 그렇지 않니?

 

That's why food is art.

그게 바로 음식이 예술인 이유야.

 

Just like making music or poetry, cooking requires skillfully combining different things.

음악이나 시를 만드는 것처럼 요리도 서로 다른 것들을 솜씨 있게 결합하는 것을 요하지.

 

Anyone can mix and match random ingredients together, but not everyone can cook well.

아무 재료나 섞는 것은 누구든 할 수 있지만, 모두가 요리를 잘하는 건 아니야.

 

Understanding the relationships between the ingredients and their interactions is crucial to creating successful dishes.

재료들 사이의 관계와 상호 작용을 이해하는 것이 성공적인 음식을 만드는 데 결정적이야.

 

This conscious openness is precisely what is at the heart of any creative process, regardless of what we do and the medium we use.

우리가 무엇을 하는지와 우리가 사용하는 수단과 상관없이, 이러한 의식적 개방성이 바로 창의적 과정의 본질이지.

Of course, food is art.

당연히 음식은 예술이야.

 

I love cooking.

나는 요리하는 것을 좋아해.

 

The smell that comes from food is awesome and it makes me feel good.

음식에서 나는 향기는 근사하며 나를 기분 좋게 만들지.

 

Peeling and chopping vegetables, stirring a pot of soup or sauce, or baking while you let your mind wander from your worries is what cooking is about.

마음속 걱정을 멀리한 채 채소의 껍질을 벗겨 썰고 수프나 소스 그릇을 젓거나 빵을 굽는 것이야말로 요리의 본질이야.

 

All these cooking actions give me a great deal of satisfaction, just like looking at great paintings or listening to music does.

이 모든 요리 행위들은 위대한 미술 작품을 보거나 음악을 듣는 것이 나에게 큰 만족감을 주는 것과 같은 큰 만족감을 줘.

 

And in fact, everything in life is beautiful, isn't it?

그리고 사실 삶의 모든 것이 아름답잖아, 그렇지 않니?

 

I believe almost everything is art.

나는 거의 모든 것이 예술이라고 믿어.

True art lasts a long time, but not food.

If one person eats a piece of cake, for example, then another cannot eat the same piece of cake.

What is the purpose of food?

Do you go to restaurants to see food?

Never.

You go to restaurants to eat, ultimately to survive!

너는 식당에 먹으러 가고, 궁극적으로는 생존하기 위해 가!

 

The purpose of food is to be eaten, not to be seen.

음식의 목적은 먹는 것이지 보여지는 것이 아니야.

 

Food is unlike forms of art in this way.

음식은 이런 점에서 예술 형식과 달라.

 

People go to museums and listen to music to be entertained, not to survive.

사람들은 생존하기 위해서가 아니라, 즐거움을 얻기 위해 미술관에 가고 음악을 들어.

Is food art?

Well, sometimes it can be, but other times it is simply a craft.

음, 때로는 그럴 수 있지만, 그 외에는 그저 기능이야.

 

Let's think of other art forms.

다른 예술 형식을 생각해 봐.

 

Painting can be a form of art, but probably not when you're painting your walls.

그림을 그리는 것은 예술 형식이 될 수 있지만, 벽에 페인트를 칠할 때는 아닐 거야.

 

Writing can be a form of art, but not when you're writing down a grocery list.

글쓰기도 예술 형식이 될 수 있지만, 식료품 목록을 써 내려갈 때는 아니야.

 

Photography can be an art form, but not when you're taking pictures of friends at a party.

사진도 예술 형식이 될 수 있지만, 파티에서 친구들의 사진을 찍을 때는 아니야.

 

Art is more the attitude than the medium.

예술은 수단이라기보다는 태도야.

 

Every part of the human experience could be turned into an art form.

인간 경험의 모든 부분이 예술 형식으로 바뀔 수 있어.

 

The same is true of food.

음식도 마찬가지야.

 

Cooking can be beautiful enough to be called art, but it can also just be about making food taste good

요리가 예술로 불릴 만큼 충분히 아름다울 수도 있지만, 그것은 또 그저 음식을 맛있게 만드는 것일 수도 있어.

 

Some think food is art, others don't, and still others have different ideas.

어떤 사람들은 음식이 예술이라고 생각하고 다른 사람들은 그렇지 않다고 생각하며 또 다른 사람들은 서로 다른 의견을 가지고 있다.
