Turandot, the Most Dangerous Love in the World

투란도트, 세상에서 가장 위험한 사랑

Welcome, everyone! Tonight, we are going to perform Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot.

여러분, 환영합니다! 오늘 밤, 우리는 지아코모 푸치니의 오페라 《투란도트》를 공연할 것입니다. 

 

Like many other famous operas, Turandot is in Italian because opera started in Italy in the 16th century.

다른 많은 유명한 오페라들처럼 《투란도트》는 이탈리아어로 되어 있는데, 오페라가 16세기 이탈리아에서 시작되었기 때문입니다. 

 

Before we begin, I'd like to tell you the storyline of the opera Turandot.

시작하기 전에, 오페라 《투란도트》의 줄거리를 알려 드리려고 합니다. 

 

You will appreciate it better if you know the story.

여러분이 줄거리를 알면 이 오페라를 더 잘 감상하게 될 것입니다.

 

Turandot, a Chinese princess, is a woman of great beauty, but she is as cold as ice.

중국의 공주 Turandot는 굉장히 아름다운 여인이지만, 그녀는 얼음처럼 차갑습니다. 

 

Any prince who wants to marry her must answer three riddles.

그녀와 결혼하길 원하는 왕자는 누구든지 세 가지 수수께끼에 답해야 합니다. 

 

If he fails, he must die.

만약 실패하면, 그는 죽어야 합니다. 

 

No one has ever been able to answer them.

지금까지 그 누구도 수수께끼에 답할 수 없었습니다. 

 

One day, a brave prince falls in love with her at first sight.

어느 날, 한 용감한 왕자가 그녀에게 첫눈에 반합니다. 

 

He becomes the first man to answer all three riddles.

그는 세 수수께끼를 모두 답한 첫 번째 사람이 됩니다. 

 

However, Turandot does not want to marry the prince.

He is nothing more than a stranger to her.

He then gives her a riddle of his own.

그러자 그는 그녀에게 자신의 수수께끼를 냅니다. 

 

He asks her, "What is my name?"

그는 그녀에게 “제 이름이 무엇입니까?”라고 묻습니다. 

 

He adds, "If you answer correctly, I will agree to die.

그는 “만약 당신이 맞게 답한다면, 나는 죽는 것에 동의하겠습니다. 

 

If you answer incorrectly, you will have to marry me."

Turandot must find the answer before dawn, but his riddle is as difficult as hers.

She says to everyone, "No one will go to sleep until someone finds out his name."

The prince then sings the most famous aria of the whole opera, "Nessun Dorma."

It means no one sleeps.

No one sleeps.

... At dawn,

The prince's name is Calaf.

왕자의 이름은 Calaf입니다.
