What’s a Memory?

추억이란 무엇일까?

Wilfrid Gordon Parker was a little boy who lived next to a nursing home.

Wilfrid Gordon Parker는 요양원 옆에 사는 어린 소년이었다.

 

He liked all the people who lived there.

그는 그곳에 사는 모든 사람들을 좋아했다.

 

But his favorite person was Ms. Nancy Gordon Cooper because her middle name was the same as his.

하지만 그가 가장 좋아하는 사람은 Nancy Gordon Cooper 할머니였는데, 왜냐하면 그녀의 가운데 이름이 그의 것과 같았기 때문이었다.

 

He told her all his secrets.

그는 자기의 모든 비밀을 그녀에게 말했다.

 

One day, Wilfrid's parents were talking about Ms. Cooper.

어느 날, Wilfrid의 부모님은 Cooper 할머니에 관해 이야기를 하고 있었다.

 

"Poor old lady," said his mother.

"Why is she a poor old lady?" asked Wilfrid.

"What's a memory?" asked Wilfrid.

"It is something you remember," said his father.

“그것은 네가 기억하는 것이란다.”라고 그의 아버지가 말했다.

 

Wilfrid wanted to know more, so he went to his neighbors.

Wilfrid는 더 알고 싶어서, 그의 이웃들에게 갔다.

 

Ms. Jordan was enjoying the sunlight.

Jordan 할머니는 햇볕을 즐기고 있었다.

 

"What's a memory?" he asked.

“기억이 뭐예요?”라고 그가 물었다.

 

"Something warm, my child," she said.

“따뜻한 거란다, 아가야.”라고 그녀가 말했다.

 

Ms. Mitchell was reading a cartoon.

Mitchell 할머니는 만화책을 읽고 있었다.

 

"What's a memory?" he asked.

“기억이 뭐예요?”라고 그가 물었다.

 

"Something that brings you laughter," she said.

“너에게 웃음을 가져다주는 것이란다.”라고 그녀가 말했다.

 

Mr. Hunter was cleaning his medal.

Hunter 할아버지는 자신의 메달을 닦고 있었다.

 

"It's something as precious as gold, young man," he said.

“그것은 금만큼 귀중한 거지, 어린 친구.”라고 그가 말했다.

 

So Wilfrid went back home to look for memories for Ms. Cooper.

그래서 Wilfrid는 Cooper 할머니께 드릴 기억들을 찾으러 집으로 돌아갔다.

 

He went into the hen house and took a fresh, warm egg from under a hen.

그는 닭장 안으로 들어가서 암탉이 품고 있던 신선하고 따뜻한 달걀을 꺼냈다.

 

Next, he looked for his sock puppet.

다음으로, 그는 자신의 양말 인형을 찾았다.

 

It always brought laughter to his parents.

그것은 항상 그의 부모님께 웃음을 안겨 드렸다.

 

Finally, he found his football in his toy box.

마지막으로, 그는 자신의 장난감 상자 속에서 축구공을 찾아냈다.

 

It was as precious as gold to him.

그것은 그에게는 금만큼이나 소중했다.

 

Wilfrid went to Ms. Cooper and gave her the things one by one.

"What a strange, sweet child!" thought Ms. Cooper, "He's brought all these wonderful things."

Then she started to remember her past.

그러다가 그녀는 자신의 과거를 기억해 내기 시작했다.

 

She held the warm egg and whispered to Wilfrid, "Long ago, I found a small blue egg in my aunt's garden."

그녀는 따뜻한 달걀을 쥐고 Wilfrid에게, “오래전에, 나는 나의 이모님 댁 정원에서 작고 푸른 알을 찾았단다.”라고 속삭였다.

 

She smiled at the sock puppet and remembered performing a puppet show for her sister.

그녀는 양말 인형을 보며 미소를 짓다가 자신의 여동생에게 인형극을 공연해 주었던 것을 기억해 냈다.

 

"My sister laughed a lot," said Ms. Cooper.

“내 여동생이 엄청나게 웃었지.”라고 Cooper 할머니가 말했다.

 

She bounced the football to Wilfrid and remembered him.

그녀는 Wilfrid에게 축구공을 튀겨서 주었고 그를 기억해 냈다.

 

"Wilfrid? Wilfrid Gordon Parker! My friend!"

“Wilfird? Wilfrid Gordon Parker! 내 친구!”

 

She also remembered their secrets one by one.

그녀는 또한 그들만의 비밀을 하나씩 기억해 냈다.

 

The two smiled at each other.

두 사람은 서로에게 미소를 지었다.

 

Ms. Cooper got her memory back thanks to the little boy with the same middle name as hers.

Cooper 할머니는 자신의 것과 같은 가운데 이름을 가진 어린 소년 덕분에 기억을 되찾았다.
