Scene 1

장면 1

It is the last week of school.

학교의 마지막 주이다.

 

Each student has just picked a piece of paper with a name on it.

각 학생들은 이름 하나가 쓰인 종이 한 장씩을 막 뽑았다.

 

Ms. Kemp: “Compliments for Classmates” will be our last activity of the school year.

Ms. Kemp: ‘학급 친구들에 대한 칭찬’이 이번 학년 우리의 마지막 활동이 될 거예요.

 

Did everyone pick a name?

모두 이름을 뽑았나요?

 

Class: Yes, Ms. Kemp.

반 아이들: 네, Kemp 선생님.

 

Students are talking to each other.

학생들이 서로 이야기를 나누고 있다.

 

Beth: So, whose name did you pick?

Beth: 너는 누구 이름을 뽑았니?

 

Lucy: (smiling) I got Boyd.

Lucy: (미소 지으며) Boyd를 뽑았어.

 

I have a lot to say about him. What about you, Beth?

그 애에 관해서는 말할 게 많아. 너는 어때, Beth?

 

Beth: (looking worried) Uh, I picked Peter’s name.

Beth: (걱정스러운 표정으로) 어, 나는 Peter 이름을 뽑았어.

 

Lucy: Peter? Oh, no! It won’t be easy to find something to compliment him on.

Lucy: Peter? 아, 이런! 그 애한테서 칭찬할 것을 찾는 게 쉽지 않을 거야.

 

Steve: Yeah. He doesn’t talk much and just sits at his desk all day long.

Steve: 그래. 그 애는 말을 많이 하지 않고 하루 종일 그냥 책상에 앉아만 있잖아.

 

Beth: (scratching her head) Well, I’ll have to find something.

Beth: (머리를 긁적이며) 음, 무언가를 찾아야 하겠다.

 

Scene 2

장면 2

Beth is at home talking with her parents about the activity.

Beth는 집에서 그 활동에 대해 부모님과 이야기를 나누고 있다.

 

Beth: Everyone has long lists of compliments for other classmates, except for me.

Beth: 저를 제외한 모두가 다른 친구들에 대한 긴 칭찬 목록을 가지고 있어요.

 

I don’t know what to compliment Peter on.

저는 Peter에 관해 무엇을 칭찬해야 할지 모르겠어요.

 

Mom: Think carefully. There should be something.

엄마: 잘 생각해 봐. 뭔가 있을 거야.

 

Beth: Well, he’s clean. He washes his face every day.

Beth: 음, 그 애는 깔끔해요. 매일 세수를 해요.

 

Mom: That’s not a compliment. Everybody does that.

엄마: 그건 칭찬이 아니지. 모든 사람들이 하는 거잖니.

 

Dad: Try again. I’m sure you can find something good to say about him.

아빠: 다시 생각해 보렴. 그 아이에 대해 말할 무언가 좋은 점을 분명히 찾을 수 있을 거야.

 

Scene 3

장면 3

The next day, there is an accident at school.

다음 날, 학교에서 사고가 일어난다.

 

Boyd’s foot is stuck in a bicycle stand.

Boyd의 발이 자전거 거치대에 끼었다.

 

Boyd: (with arms in the air) Help! I need help!

Boyd: (공중에 양팔을 벌린 채) 도와줘! 도움이 필요해!

 

Beth: Stay still. I’m trying to pull your foot out.

Beth: 가만히 있어. 네 발을 당겨 꺼내려고 노력하는 중이야.

 

Boyd: (screaming) Ouch! That hurts!

Boyd: (비명을 지르며) 아야! 아파!

 

Peter: Let me help. Just a minute.

Peter: 내가 도와줄게. 잠깐만.

 

Peter runs to the school’s kitchen and comes back with butter.

Peter가 학교 주방으로 뛰어가 버터를 가지고 온다.

 

Peter: I’m going to put this butter on your foot.

Peter: 네 발에 이 버터를 바를 거야.

 

Boyd: What? Butter?

Boyd: 뭐? 버터를?

 

Peter: Just stay calm.

Peter: 그냥 침착하게 있어.

 

Beth: (pointing to Boyd’s foot) Wow! It’s working! Boyd’s foot is coming out of the stand.

Beth: (Boyd의 발을 가리키며) 와! 효과가 있어! Boyd의 발이 거치대에서 빠져나오고 있어.

 

Scene 4

장면 4

Beth is eating dinner with her parents.

Beth는 부모님과 저녁 식사를 하고 있다.

 

She tells them about what happened to Boyd.

그녀는 부모님께 Boyd에게 일어난 일에 대해 이야기한다.

 

Beth: There was a little accident at school today.

Beth: 오늘 학교에서 작은 사고가 있었어요.

 

Boyd’s foot got stuck in a bicycle stand.

Boyd의 발이 자전거 거치대에 끼었어요.

 

Mom: Oh, no! So how did he get his foot out?

엄마: 아, 저런! 그래서 발을 어떻게 뺐니?

 

Beth: Peter put butter on his foot and then pulled it out.

Beth: Peter가 그 애 발에 버터를 바르고 나서 발을 당겨서 꺼냈어요.

 

Dad: That was really creative. Messy but creative.

아빠: 그거 정말 창의적이었구나. 지저분하지만 창의적이야.

 

Beth: Hmm. Creative? Can that be a compliment, Dad?

Beth: 흠. 창의적이라고요? 아빠, 그것이 칭찬이 될 수 있어요?

 

Dad: Sure.

아빠: 물론이지.

 

Scene 5

장면 5

It is the last day of school, and the students are complimenting each other.

학교의 마지막 날이고, 학생들은 서로를 칭찬하고 있다.

 

Ms. Kemp: Joanne, what compliment do you have for Beth?

Ms. Kemp: Joanne, Beth에게 무슨 칭찬을 해주겠니?

 

Joanne: Beth, you’re always cheerful. You’re also kind and fair to everybody.

Joanne: Beth, 너는 항상 쾌활해. 또한 친절하고 모두에게 공정해.

 

Beth: Thanks, Joanne. It’s so nice of you to say so.

Beth: 고마워, Joanne. 그렇게 말해 주다니 넌 정말 친절하구나.

 

Ms. Kemp: Beth, let’s hear from you now. You picked Peter’s name.

Ms. Kemp: Beth, 이제 네 말을 들어 보자. 너는 Peter의 이름을 뽑았구나.

 

Beth: (hesitating) Well, I think Peter is creative.

Beth: (주저하며) 음, 저는 Peter가 창의적이라고 생각해요.

 

Peter, you’re ... uh ... creative.

Peter, 너는... 어... 창의적이야.

 

Peter: (shyly) Really?

Peter: (수줍게) 정말?

 

Ms. Kemp: What made you think Peter is creative?

Ms. Kemp: Peter가 왜 창의적이라고 생각하니?

 

Beth: (after a long pause) When Boyd’s foot got stuck in the bicycle stand the other day, Peter got it out by using butter.

Beth: (한참 있다가) 일전에 Boyd의 발이 자전거 거치대에 끼었을 때, Peter는 버터를 사용해서 그의 발을 꺼냈어요.

 

That was creative.

그것은 창의적이었어요.

 

Boyd: Yeah! Nobody else thought of doing that.

Boyd: 맞아! 어느 누구도 그렇게 할 생각을 하지 못했어.

 

Steve: I didn’t know that. Well, then, I also think he’s creative.

Steve: 난 몰랐어. 음, 그렇다면, 나도 그가 창의적이라고 생각해.

 

Beth: (confidently) Yeah, Peter, you ARE creative!

Beth: (자신 있게) 그래, Peter, 너는 창의적이야!

 

Peter: Thanks, Beth! It’s the best compliment ever!

Peter: 고마워, Beth! 그건 최고의 칭찬이야!
