활약하는 십 대들

Many young people are making the world a better place.

많은 젊은 사람들이 세상을 더 좋은 곳으로 만들고 있다.

 

For example, Carter and Olivia Ries have become leaders in saving animals.

예를 들어, Carter와 Olivia Ries는 동물을 구하는 일에 리더가 되어 왔다.

 

Although they are only teenagers, they have actually made a difference in the world.

비록 그들은 십 대일 뿐이지만, 실제로 세상에 변화를 일으켜 왔다.

 

How were they able to do that?

그들이 어떻게 그것을 할 수 있었을까?

 

Let's hear from Carter.

Carter의 이야기를 들어보자.

 

When I was five, my little sister Olivia and I each adopted a cheetah.

내가 다섯 살 때, 나의 여동생 Olivia와 나는 각자 치타를 입양했다.

 

Did we raise cheetahs at home?

우리가 치타를 집에서 길렀을까?

 

No, we donated to a charity that protects wild cheetahs in South Africa.

아니, 우리는 남아프리카공화국에 있는 야생 치타를 보호하는 자선단체에 기부했다.

 

Our parents told us that if we did not protect them, we might not be able to see cheetahs in the near future.

부모님께서는 우리에게 우리가 그들을 보호하지 않으면, 가까운 미래에 치타를 볼 수 없을지도 모른다고 말씀하셨다.

 

We soon became interested in helping other endangered animals.

우리는 곧 다른 멸종 위기의 동물들을 도와주는 것에 관심을 갖게 되었다.

 

A few years later, with help from our parents, we created a non-profit organization to protect them.

몇 년 후에, 부모님의 도움으로, 우리는 그들을 보호하기 위해 비영리 단체를 만들었다.

 

We wanted the next generation to be able to see these animals, so we named our organization One More Generation.

우리는 다음 세대가 이러한 동물들을 볼 수 있기를 원했기에, 우리 단체를 One More Generation이라고 이름 붙였다.

 

We also studied endangered animals and educated our friends about them.

우리는 또한 멸종 위기의 동물들을 연구했고 친구들에게 그들에 대해 가르쳐 주었다.

 

Then one day, a terrible oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico.

그러던 어느 날, 끔찍한 석유 유출 사건이 멕시코만에서 발생했다.

 

A lot of sea animals were completely covered with oil, and they were dying.

많은 해양 동물들이 완전히 기름을 뒤집어썼고, 죽어 가고 있었다.

 

We had to do something.

우리는 무엇인가를 해야만 했다.

 

We started collecting animal rescue supplies such as pet carrying cages and rubber gloves from everyone in our neighborhood.

우리는 애완동물 수송용 우리와 고무장갑과 같은 동물 구조 물품들을 동네의 모든 사람으로부터 모으기 시작했다.

 

Four months later, our family drove to the Gulf of Mexico to deliver what we collected and helped to save the animals.

4개월 후에, 우리 가족은 우리가 모았던 것들을 전달하기 위해서 멕시코만으로 운전해 갔으며 동물들을 구하는 일을 도왔다.

 

While we were working there, we learned something very useful.

거기서 일하는 동안에, 우리는 매우 유용한 것을 배웠다.

 

When we put mayonnaise into a turtle's throat, the turtle threw up.

마요네즈를 거북이의 목구멍에 집어넣으면, 거북이가 토했다.

 

That way, we were able to get oil out of turtles.

그런 식으로, 우리는 거북이들 속에 있는 기름을 빼낼 수 있었다.

 

I never knew mayonnaise could be used to save animals!

나는 마요네즈가 동물을 구하는 데 사용될 수 있다는 것을 전혀 알지 못했다!

 

On our last day, we met a marine life specialist.

마지막 날에, 우리는 해양 생물 전문가를 만났다.

 

She told us that plastic waste is more dangerous to sea animals than oil spills are.

플라스틱 쓰레기가 해양 동물들에게 더 위험하다고 말했다.

 

A lot of sea animals and sea birds die from eating plastic waste.

그녀는 우리에게 석유 유출보다  많은 해양 동물과 바다 새들이 플라스틱 쓰레기를 먹어서 죽는다.

 

After we came home, we created an educational project about how to reduce plastic waste.

집으로 돌아온 후, 우리는 플라스틱 쓰레기를 줄일 수 있는 방법에 관한 교육 프로젝트를 만들었다.

 

In addition to this, our organization continues to do various projects to save animals.

이것 외에도, 우리 단체는 동물들을 구하기 위해 다양한 프로젝트들을 계속하고 있다.

 

Although we started small, we are making a big difference.

비록 우리는 작은 것부터 시작했지만, 큰 변화를 만들어 내고 있는 중이다.
