"The world sends us garbage, we send back music."

“세상이 우리에게 쓰레기를 보내면, 우리는 음악을 돌려준다.”

 

This was written on the back of a concert ticket I was given.

이것은 내가 받은 음악회 입장권의 뒷면에 쓰여 있었다.

 

The musical group was called "The Junk Orchestra."

그 음악 그룹은 ‘정크 오케스트라’로 불렸다.

 

They played instruments made entirely out of garbage.

그들은 전부 쓰레기로만 만들어진 악기를 연주했다.

 

I could not imagine what kind of sound these instruments would make, so I was eager to find out.

나는 그런 악기들이 어떤 종류의 소리를 낼지 상상할 수 없었고, 그래서 나는 알아보고 싶어졌다.

 

Before the concert, I thought that the instruments might sound strange.

음악회가 시작되기 전에 나는 그 악기들이 이상한 소리를 낼지도 모른다고 생각했다.

 

After a few minutes, a group of young people began to walk on the stage.

몇 분 후에 한 무리의 젊은이들이 무대 위로 걸어 올라오기 시작했다.

 

The first thing I noticed was their instruments: a cello made out of a shiny oil tank, a violin made with forks, and a flute made with a water pipe and buttons.

내가 처음으로 알아차린 것은 그들의 악기였는데, 그것들은 반짝이는 기름통으로 만들어진 첼로, 포크로 만들어진 바이올린, 수도관과 단추로 만들어진 플루트였다.

 

The concert began with a girl playing Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 on her shiny cello.

음악회는 한 소녀가 자신의 반짝이는 첼로로 바흐의 첼로 모음곡 1번을 연주하는 것으로 시작되었다.

 

I was shocked by the deep sound.

나는 그 깊은 소리에 충격을 받았다.

 

I was so into the music that I forgot that they were playing with instruments made from recycled materials.

나는 음악에 너무 심취해서 그들이 재활용된 재료들로 만들어진 악기를 연주하고 있다는 것을 잊었다.

 

After the concert, I was eager to write a story about the orchestra.

음악회가 끝나고, 나는 그 오케스트라에 대한 이야기를 몹시 쓰고 싶었다.

 

I met Favio Chávez, the conductor, and asked him about the orchestra.

나는 지휘자인 Favio Chávez를 만나서 그에게 오케스트라에 대해 물었다.

 

Lucy White: Why did you start The Junk Orchestra?

 Lucy White: 왜 당신은 정크 오케스트라를 시작하셨나요?

 

Favio Chávez: When I went to a small town called Cateura in Paraguay to work on a recycling program in 2005, I saw children living in a town that was mostly filled with garbage.

Favio Chávez: 2005년에 재활용 프로그램에서 일을 하기 위해서 내가 파라과이의 카테우라라고 불리는 작은 마을에 갔을 때, 나는 대부분이 쓰레기로 가득 차 있는 마을에 살고 있는 어린이들을 보았습니다.

 

I wanted to add something positive to their lives, so I decided to share my love of music with them.

나는 그들의 삶에 긍정적인 무엇인가를 더해 주고 싶어서, 음악에 대한 나의 사랑을 그들과 나누기로 결정했습니다.

 

Lucy White: Why did you use garbage to make instruments?

Lucy White: 왜 당신은 악기를 만들기 위해 쓰레기를 이용했나요?

 

Favio Chávez: One person's garbage is another person's treasure.

Favio Chávez: 한 사람의 쓰레기는 다른 사람의 보물입니다.

 

Nicolás Gómez, a local garbage picker, helped me a lot.

그 지역의 쓰레기 줍는 사람인 Nicolás Gómez가 나를 많이 도와주었습니다.

 

He made it possible for children to play music by making instruments out of garbage.

그는 쓰레기로 악기를 만들어 줌으로써 어린이들이 음악을 연주하는 것이 가능하도록 만들었습니다.

 

The wonderful thing about these instruments was that the children didn't have to worry about spending a lot of money on them.

이 악기들의 멋진 점은 어린이들이 악기에 많은 돈을 쓸 것을 걱정하지 않아도 된다는 점이었죠.

 

Lucy White: What do you want people to learn through your music?

Lucy White: 당신의 음악을 통해서 사람들이 무엇을 배우기를 원하십니까?

 

Favio Chávez: I want people to know that even something worthless can make inspiring music.

Favio Chávez: 나는 가치 없는 것도 영감을 주는 음악을 만들어 낼 수 있다는 것을 사람들이 알게 되기를 원합니다.

 

After interviewing Chávez, I realized that it really doesn't matter what instrument you play with as long as you put your heart into playing it.

Chávez를 인터뷰한 후에 나는 사람들이 악기를 연주하는 데 마음을 쏟아붓는 한, 그 사람이 연주하는 악기가 무엇인지는 별로 중요하지 않다는 것을 깨달았다.

 

The children of Cateura showed me that an orchestra is formed by people, not by instruments.

카테우라의 어린이들은 나에게 오케스트라는 악기에 의해서가 아니라 사람에 의해 이루어지는 것이라는 것을 보여 주었다.
