The Idea That Brought Peace to My Town

우리 마을에 평화를 가져온 아이디어

My name is Richard Turere. I live in Kenya in the southern part of Nairobi National Park.

내 이름은 Richard Turere야. 나는 케냐의 나이로비 국립 공원의 남쪽 지역에 살고 있어.

 

The southern part of the park does not have a fence, so wild animals like lions move out of the park freely.

공원의 남쪽 지역은 울타리가 없어서 사자와 같은 야생 동물들이 공원 밖으로 자유롭게 나가.

 

They kill the animals that farmers are raising.

그들은 농부들이 키우고 있는 동물들을 죽여.

 

As a result, farmers try to kill the lions because they want to protect their animals.

그 결과, 농부들은 그들의 동물들을 보호하기를 원하기 때문에 사자들을 죽이려고 해.

 

One morning, I woke up and saw our cow lying on the ground.

어느 날 아침, 나는 일어나서 우리 소가 바닥에 누워 있는 것을 보았어.

 

It was dead, and I felt so bad.

소는 죽어 있었고, 나는 아주 기분이 좋지 않았어.

 

At first, I thought I couldn't do anything because I was only eleven.

처음에는, 내가 겨우 열한 살이었기 때문에 아무것도 할 수 없을 거라고 생각했어.

 

Then I realized I shouldn't ignore the problem.

그러고 나서 나는 이 문제를 무시하지 않아야 한다는 걸 깨달았어.

 

I really wanted to help the people in my town in the same situation.

나는 같은 상황에 있는 우리 마을 사람들을 정말로 돕고 싶었어.

 

My first idea was to use fire.

나의 첫 번째 아이디어는 불을 사용하는 것이었어.

 

I thought lions were afraid of it.

나는 사자들이 불을 무서워할 거라고 생각했어.

 

Sadly, it didn't work.

슬프게도 그것은 효과가 없었어.

 

Instead, the fire helped the lions to better watch the cows move.

대신에 불은 사자들이 소들이 움직이는 것을 더욱 잘 볼 수 있도록 도왔어.

 

Then I had another idea.

그러고 나서 나는 다른 아이디어를 생각해 냈어.

 

It was to use a scarecrow.

그것은 허수아비를 사용하는 거였어.

 

But the lions were very clever.

하지만 사자들은 매우 영리했어.

 

The first day, they were turned away.

첫날에는 사자들이 돌아갔어.

 

On the second day, they jumped in and killed more animals.

둘째 날에는 사자들이 뛰어 들어와서 더 많은 동물들을 죽였어.

 

One night, I was walking around the cows with a light, and the lions didn't come.

어느 날 밤, 나는 전등을 들고 소들의 주위를 걷고 있었는데 사자들은 오지 않았어.

 

I discovered that lions were afraid of a moving light.

나는 사자들이 움직이는 불빛을 두려워한다는 것을 발견했어.

 

So I came up with an idea.

그래서 나는 생각을 냈지.

 

I decided to invent lights that move electronically.

나는 전자적으로 움직이는 전등들을 발명하기로 결심했어.

 

Because I like machines, I could find what I needed to make the lights.

나는 기계들을 좋아했기 때문에 전등들을 만들기 위해 내가 필요했던 것들을 찾을 수 있었어.

 

I found an old car battery, a small device from a motorcycle, a switch, and a broken electronic light.

나는 오래된 자동차 배터리, 오토바이에서 찾은 작은 장치, 스위치, 그리고 부서진 전등을 찾았어.

 

At thirteen, I finally made what I called “lion lights.”

열세 살에 나는 내가 ‘사자 전등’이라고 불렀던 것을 마침내 만들었어.

My father said, “I'm so proud of you, Richard!”

나의 아버지께서는 말씀하셨어, “정말 자랑스럽구나, Richard!”

 

Since then, I have set up lights at seven homes in my community and haven't heard anyone complain about lions.

그때 이후로, 나는 우리 동네 일곱 가구의 집에 전등을 설치했고 어느 누구도 사자들에 대해 불평하는 것을 듣지 못했어.

 

They thanked me, saying “This is exactly what we wanted, lovely boy!“

“이것이 바로 우리가 원했던 거야, 사랑스러운 소년아!”라고 말하면서 그들은 나에게 감사를 표했어.

 

Surprisingly, my idea is now used all over Kenya to scare away other animals, such as elephants.

놀랍게도 나의 아이디어는 이제 코끼리와 같은 다른 동물들을 쫓기 위해서 케냐 전역에 걸쳐 사용되고 있어.

 

From this experience, I realized that I could make a difference in people's lives even though I am just a young boy.

이 경험을 통해 나는 내가 어린 소년이지만 사람들의 삶에 변화를 일으킬 수 있다는 것을 깨달았어.

 

I was also able to prevent lions from being killed.

나는 사자들이 죽임을 당하는 것 또한 막을 수 있었어.

 

Thanks to my work, I got a scholarship to a great school in Kenya.

나의 작업 덕분에, 나는 케냐 최고의 학교에 장학금을 받고 입학하게 되었어.

 

I am really excited about this.

나는 정말 기분이 좋아.

 

In my new school, I am now teaching my friends how to make and use the lights.

나의 새 학교에서 나는 지금 나의 친구들에게 어떻게 전등들을 만들고 사용하는지 가르쳐 주고 있어.

 

I tell my friends, “Our ideas can make a difference in people's lives!”

나는 친구들에게 “우리의 아이디어가 사람들의 삶에 변화를 일으킬 수 있어!”라고 이야기해.
