A Bowl of Differences

차이점 한 그릇

 

Ms. Lee walked into her classroom, followed by a tall boy.

이 선생님이 교실로 걸어 들어오셨고 한 키 큰 소년이 따라 들어왔다. 

 

She said, "We have a new student today.

그녀는 “오늘 새로운 학생이 왔습니다. 

 

Say hello to Mikhail." She wrote "Perm" on the board.

Mikhail에게 인사하세요.”라고 말씀하셨다. 그녀는 Perm(페름)이라고 칠판에 쓰셨다. 

 

"This is where Mikhail is from. Does anyone know where this is?"

“이곳이 Mikhail이 온 곳이에요. 여기가 어디인지 아는 사람 있나요?” 

 

A voice from the back said, "In a beauty salon!"

뒤에서 어떤 목소리가 “미용실이요!”라고 말했다. 

 

A few students laughed.

몇 명의 학생들이 웃었다. 

 

Sumi answered confidently, "It’s in Russia."

수미는 자신 있게 대답했다. “그곳은 러시아에 있어요.” 

 

Sumi was one of the smartest students in the class.

수미는 반에서 가장 똑똑한 학생들 중 한 명이었다.

 

"That's right. Mikhail's family is from Russia.

“맞아요. Mikhail의 가족은 러시아 출신이에요. 

 

He doesn't speak Korean well.

Mikhail은 한국말을 잘 하지 못한답니다. 

 

Let's help him feel at home.

그가 편하게 느낄 수 있도록 도와줍시다. 

 

Are there any empty seats?"

빈 자리가 있나요?” 

 

There were a few empty seats, but no one said anything.

몇 개의 빈 자리가 있었지만 아무도 이야기하지 않았다. 

 

They didn't want to be bothered with helping the new student.

그들은 전학생을 도와주는 귀찮은 일은 원치 않았다. 

 

Jiho yelled, "There! There's an empty seat next to Junho."

지호가 소리쳤다. “저기요! 준호 옆에 빈 자리가 있어요.” 

 

"Okay, Mikhail, go sit next to Junho over there," said Ms. Lee.

“그래, Mikhail, 저기 준호 옆에 가서 앉도록 해라.”라고 이 선생님이 말씀하셨다. 

 

Junho gave Jiho a stare.

준호는 지호를 노려보았다. 

 

If Mikhail had been the first foreign student at this school, he might have drawn more attention from the other students.

만약 Mikhail이 이 학교의 첫 번째 외국인 학생이었다면, 다른 학생들로부터 더 많은 관심을 끌었을 것이다. 

 

But there was Yoshiko from Japan in Class 3 and Terry from New Zealand in Class 8.

하지만 3반에는 일본에서 온 Yoshiko가, 8반에는 뉴질랜드에서 온 Terry가 있었다. 

 

Even Ms. Lee's class was very multicultural.

이 선생님의 반조차도 굉장히 다문화적이었다. 

 

There were several students whose mothers or fathers were from countries other than Korea.

한국이 아닌 다른 나라 출신의 어머니 또는 아버지를 가진 학생들이 여러 명 있었다. 

 

Mikhail sat down next to Junho, and they exchanged uncomfortable smiles.

Mikhail은 준호 옆에 앉았고, 그들은 불편한 미소를 주고받았다. 

 

It wasn't that Junho didn't like Mikhail.

준호가 Mikhail을 좋아하지 않는 것은 아니었다. 

 

Junho just wasn't interested in him, like the other students.

준호는 단지 다른 학생들처럼 그에게 관심이 없었다. 

 

He wasn't interested in where Perm was.

그는 페름이 어디에 있는지 관심이 없었다. 

 

He didn't care about what language Mikhail spoke.

Mikhail이 어떤 언어를 쓰는지도 관심이 없었다. 

 

This indifference toward other cultures was an increasing problem at Junho's school.

다른 문화에 대한 이러한 무관심은 준호의 학교에서 증가하고 있는 문제였다. 

 

Being indifferent is not a bad act in itself.

무관심하다는 것은 그 자체로 나쁜 행동은 아니다. 

 

But more often than not, when apathy joins hands with ignorance, prejudice is born.

하지만 대게 무관심이 무지함과 합쳐질 때 편견이 생겨나게 된다.

 

Ms. Lee said, "Since we have a new student, let's have a special welcome lunch for him this Friday.

이 선생님은 말씀하셨다. “전학생이 왔으니까, 이번 주 금요일에 그를 위해 특별한 환영 점심식사를 하도록 합시다. 

 

I'll make bibimbap for all of you. How does that sound?"

내가 여러분 모두를 위해 비빔밥을 만들 거예요. 어때요?” 

 

The room was flooded with applause as the students exchanged high fives.

학생들이 하이파이브를 주고받으면서 교실은 박수로 넘쳐났다. 

 

It wasn't because they were excited about welcoming the new student, but because they knew that Ms. Lee was an amazing cook.

그것은 그들이 전학생을 환영하는 것에 신이 났기 때문이 아니라, 이 선생님이 요리를 아주 잘 한다는 것을 알고 있었기 때문이었다. 

 

A few days later, the day of the welcome lunch came. By 11:30 a.m., there wasn't a drop of concentration in the students' eyes.

며칠 후, 환영 점심식사의 날이 왔다. 오전 11시 30분까지, 학생들의 눈에서 집중력이라고는 전혀 찾아볼 수 없었다. 

 

The lunch bell rang, and the class, like Olympic runners coming out of the starting blocks, simultaneously leaped out of their seats.

점심시간 종이 울렸고, 출발대에서 나오는 올림픽 달리기 선수들처럼 반 학생들은 동시에 자리를 박차고 나왔다. 

 

The class cheered as Ms. Lee came into the classroom with a big cart.

반 학생들은 이 선생님이 큰 카트를 가지고 교실로 들어오시자 환호했다. 

 

On the cart was a big bowl with a silver cover.

카트에는 은색 덮개로 덮인 큰 그릇이 있었다. 

 

Ms. Lee said, "Get in line for your bibimbap."

이 선생님은 “비빔밥을 먹을 사람은 줄을 서세요.”라고 말씀하셨다. 

 

The students got in line and Ms. Lee uncovered the big bowl.

학생들은 줄을 섰고 이 선생님은 큰 그릇의 덮개를 열었다. 

 

Inside was white rice and nothing else.

안에는 하얀 밥 외에는 아무것도 없었다.

 

The students were puzzled.

학생들은 당황했다. 

 

Sumi cried, "You said we were going to have bibimbap today!"

수미는 외쳤다. “오늘 비빔밥 먹는다고 하셨잖아요!” 

 

Ms. Lee replied, "Yes, I did. It's a new kind of bibimbap."

이 선생님은 대답했다. “그랬죠. 이건 새로운 종류의 비빔밥이에요.” 

 

Junho cried, "No way! That's not bibimbap."

준호가 외쳤다. “말도 안돼요! 저건 비빔밥이 아니에요.” 

 

Ms. Lee asked, "What's wrong? Isn't the rice enough?"

이 선생님이 물어보셨다. “뭐가 잘못되었나요? 밥만으로는 충분하지 않은 건가요?” 

 

"No! It's the other ingredients that make bibimbap taste so great!" Taemin yelled.

“충분치 않아요! 비빔밥을 아주 맛있게 해 주는 건 다른 재료들인걸요!”라고 태민이 소리쳤다. 

 

"How can the other ingredients taste good together when they are so different from one another?" Ms. Lee asked innocently.

“서로 완전히 다른 재료들인데 어떻게 다른 재료들이 함께 맛있는 맛을 낼 수 있는 걸까요?”라고 이 선생님은 모르는 척 물어보셨다. 

 

Jiho said, "The different tastes come together to create a wonderful new taste."

지호가 말했다. “다른 맛들이 모여서 훌륭한 새로운 맛을 만들어 내요.” 

 

"That's right. Each ingredient has its own special taste, color, and feel.

“맞아요. 각 재료는 고유의 특별한 맛과 색, 그리고 식감을 가지고 있죠. 

 

But when they are mixed together, they create a whole which is much greater than the sum of its parts," said Sumi.

하지만 그것들이 함께 섞일 때 각각의 합보다 훨씬 더 훌륭한 전체를 만들어 내요.” 수미가 말했다.

 

Junho said. "I see your point. Our classroom is just like a bowl of bibimbap."

준호가 말했다. “선생님의 뜻을 알겠어요. 우리의 교실이 마치 비빔밥 한 그릇 같네요.” 

 

"That's an interesting idea. I hadn't thought about that until you mentioned it," said Ms. Lee as she tried to hide her smile.

“그거 흥미로운 생각인데. 나는 준호가 언급할 때까지는 그렇게 생각하지 못했는데.”라고 이 선생님은 웃음을 감추려 애쓰며 말했다. 

 

She went outside the classroom and brought in another cart with all the other ingredients.

그녀는 교실 밖으로 나가서 다른 모든 재료가 들어 있는 다른 카트를 가지고 들어오셨다. 

 

She said, "All this talk about food is making my mouth water. Let's mix it up!"

그녀는 말씀하셨다. “음식에 대해 말했더니 입에 침이 고이네요. 섞도록 합시다!” 

 

The students put all the ingredients in the big bowl and took turns mixing them up with big spoons.

학생들은 모든 재료를 큰 그릇에 넣고 돌아가며 큰 숟가락으로 그것들을 섞었다. 

 

Even Mikhail had a chance to mix his first bibimbap.

Mikhail까지 그의 첫 번째 비빔밥을 섞을 기회를 가졌다. 

 

As the students gathered in a circle eating bibimbap that day, they got to know Mikhail and one another better.

그날 학생들은 동그랗게 모여 비빔밥을 먹으면서 Mikhail과 서로에 대해 더욱 잘 알게 되었다. 

 

They began to embrace and enjoy their differences.

그들은 그들의 다른 점을 받아들이고 즐기기 시작했다. 

 

Tomorrow would be different, but in a good, bibimbap way.

내일은 바람직한, 비빔밥의 방식으로 달라질 것이다.
