이탈리아에서의 모험

I was thrilled when my cousin, Suji, invited me to Italy, a country in southern Europe that looks like a boot.

나는 사촌 수지가 남부 유럽에 있는 부츠처럼 생긴 나라인 이탈리아에 나를 초대했을 때 정말 신이 났다. 

 

She had a few days off from studying music in a conservatory, so we could spend a week together in Rome and Venice.

그녀는 음악 학교에서 음악을 공부하는데, 며칠 쉬는 날이 생겨서 우리는 로마와 베니스에서 함께 일주일을 보낼 수 있었다. 

 

I had never been abroad by myself, and I was a bit worried, but after the long flight for twelve hours, I was pleased to be greeted by my cousin at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome.

나는 혼자 외국에 가 본 적이 없어서 약간 걱정했지만, 12시간에 걸친 긴 비행이 끝난 후 내 사촌이 로마에 있는 레오나르도 다빈치 국제공항에서 맞아 주어서 기뻤다. 

 

Since Italy is seven hours behind Seoul, I was quite exhausted and sleepy when I got there.

이탈리아는 서울보다 7시간 늦기 때문에, 나는 그곳에 도착했을 때 꽤 지치고 졸렸다. 

 

However, I forced myself to stay awake to begin my trip in earnest.

하지만 나는 본격적으로 여행을 시작하기 위해 깨어 있으려고 스스로를 다잡았다.

 

Rome was like a giant museum to me. We began our sightseeing at the Colosseum.

로마는 내게 거대한 박물관 같았다. 우리는 콜로세움에서 관광을 시작했다. 

 

Nowadays, we can only see a part of what was once the greatest structure in the ancient world.

오늘날 우리는 한때 고대의 가장 위대한 건축물이었던 것의 단지 일부만 볼 수 있다. 

 

It amazed me to think that people could build such a structure without modern construction equipment.

나는 사람들이 현대의 건설 장비 없이 그러한 건축물을 지을 수 있었다는 것을 생각하니 놀라웠다. 

 

The Colosseum has eighty arches through which about fifty thousand people could go in and out in fifteen minutes!

콜로세움은 약 5만 명의 사람들이 15분 내로 드나들 수 있는 아치가 80개 있다! 

 

As I reached the top of the stairs inside, I looked down and I could almost hear the cheer of the crowd.

내부 계단 꼭대기에 올랐을 때, 나는 아래를 내려다보았는데 군중의 환호 소리가 들리는 것 같았다. 

 

Suji and I walked along a path leading away from the Colosseum and heard the sound of falling water.

수지와 나는 콜로세움에서 나오는 길을 따라 걸었고, 물이 떨어지는 소리를 들었다. 

 

We knew instantly that we were near the famous Trevi Fountain.

우리는 곧바로 우리가 그 유명한 트레비 분수 근처에 있다는 것을 알아차렸다. 

 

Legend says that a single coin thrown into the fountain will ensure a return to Rome, a second coin will bring true love, and a third coin marriage!

전설에 따르면 분수로 던져진 동전 하나는 반드시 로마로 돌아오게 하며, 두 번째 동전은 진정한 사랑을 가져다주고, 세 번째 동전은 결혼을 이루어 준다고 한다! 

 

I threw one over my shoulder, wishing a return to Italy someday.

나는 언젠가 이탈리아로 돌아오기를 바라면서 나의 어깨 너머로 하나를 던졌다. 

 

I found it interesting that even on the other side of the world, people still wish for simple things like happiness, love, and marriage.

나는 지구 반대편에서도 사람들이 여전히 행복, 사랑, 그리고 결혼 같은 단순한 것들을 바란다는 사실이 흥미로웠다.

 

Who in Rome could miss out on a chance to visit Vatican City, the place where the Pope lives?

누가 로마에서 교황이 사는 곳인 바티칸 시국을 방문할 기회를 놓칠까? 

 

It is known as the smallest state in the world.

그곳은 세계에서 가장 작은 국가로 알려져 있다. 

 

In fact, it takes only thirty minutes to walk from one border to the other!

사실, 한쪽 국경에서 다른 쪽으로 가는 데 고작 30분이 걸린다! 

 

I was overwhelmed, however, by the collection of sculptures and paintings in the Vatican Museums.

그러나 나는 바티칸 박물관에 있는 조각상과 그림 소장품에 압도당했다. 

 

The Creation of Adam, one of Michelangelo's masterpieces, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, still lingers in my mind.

미켈란젤로의 걸작 중 하나인 ‘아담의 창조’는 시스티나 예배당의 천장에 있는데, 여전히 내 마음속에 남아 있다. 

 

Although I knew photographs are not allowed, the masterpiece was so impressive that I almost took one.

나는 사진 (촬영)이 허용되지 않는 것을 알고 있었지만, 그 걸작이 너무 인상 깊어서 거의 사진을 찍을 뻔했다. 

 

After looking around, we walked out to see many people lined up in front of a small store where green apple gelato was served.

우리는 성당을 둘러본 후 걸어 나왔는데 많은 사람들이 풋사과 젤라토를 파는 작은 가게 앞에 줄을 서 있는 것을 보았다. 

 

Suji convinced me to wait in line for over twenty minutes saying that it would be worth it. She was right: the gelato was out of this world.

수지는 그럴 만한 가치가 있다면서 20분 넘게 줄을 서서 기다리도록 나를 설득했다. 그녀가 옳았다. 그 젤라토는 너무도 훌륭했다.

 

After a couple of more days in Rome, we headed to Venice.

로마에서 며칠을 더 보낸 후, 우리는 베니스로 향했다. 

 

The seaside city was a lot more romantic than Rome, but a lot more humid as well.

그 해변 도시는 로마보다 훨씬 더 낭만적이었지만, 훨씬 더 습하기도 했다. 

 

Suji said she had to visit a friend, so she suggested that I explore the city on my own for a few hours.

수지는 친구를 만나러 가야 한다고 말했기 때문에, 그녀는 내가 혼자서 그 도시를 몇 시간 동안 답사할 것을 제안했다. 

 

We could meet up at the train station later in the afternoon.

우리는 나중에 오후에 기차역에서 다시 만나면 되었다. 

 

I decided to go to the Rialto Bridge first, so I started walking.

나는 먼저 리알토 다리에 가기로 결심했기 때문에, 걷기 시작했다. 

 

Within moments, the winding alleys made my map almost useless.

얼마 지나지 않아, 구불구불한 골목길이 내 지도를 거의 쓸모없게 만들었다. 

 

After some wandering, I was lucky enough to meet a group of tourists my age from Britain.

얼마간 헤맨 후에 나는 운 좋게 영국에서 온 내 또래의 단체 관광객을 만날 수 있었다. 

 

They were headed to the Rialto Bridge too!

그들도 역시 리알토 다리로 향하고 있었다! 

 

The bridge itself was as elegant as people say it is, but I was more impressed by the beautiful view of the canal from the steps of the bridge.

그 다리는 사람들이 말한 것처럼 그 자체로 우아했지만, 나는 다리 계단에서 보는 아름다운 운하 경관에 더 큰 감명을 받았다. 

 

I said goodbye to my British friends and walked to St. Mark's Square, one of the prime attractions of Venice.

나는 영국 친구들에게 작별 인사를 하고 베니스의 주요 관광 명소들 중 하나인 산마르코 광장으로 걸어갔다. 

 

I had never seen so many pigeons in my life.

나는 내 생에 그렇게 많은 비둘기를 본 적이 없었다. 

 

They were so used to being around people that they would wait until people weren't paying attention and then steal their crackers!

비둘기들은 사람들 주위에 있는 것에 너무나 익숙해져서 사람들이 주의를 기울이지 않을 때까지 기다렸다가 그들의 크래커를 훔치곤 했다! 

 

But what truly made me stop and stare in wonder were the beautiful buildings surrounding all three sides of the square.

그러나 정말로 나를 멈춰 세워 감탄하며 바라보게 한 것은 광장의 삼면을 둘러싼 아름다운 건물들이었다. 

 

Along the buildings were shops selling beautiful glass pieces, gloves, and much more.

건물들을 따라 아름다운 유리 공예품, 장갑 등을 파는 상점들이 있었다. 

 

After looking around for a while, I bought small glasses for my parents.

잠시 둘러본 후에 나는 부모님께 드릴 작은 유리 공예품들을 샀다.

 

My trip to Venice would not be complete without a gondola ride along the Grand Canal, which snakes through the city in a large S shape.

나의 베니스 여행은 큰 S자 모양으로 도시를 구불구불하게 관통하는 대운하를 따라 곤돌라를 타지 않는다면, 완성되지 않을 것이다. 

 

I was disappointed to find out the fare to ride the Grand Canal by myself was so expensive that I could not afford it.

나는 대운하에서 혼자 곤돌라를 타는 요금이 너무 비싸서 표를 살 수 없다는 것을 알게 되어 실망했다. 

 

The moment I was turning back, I saw my British tourist friends walking toward the ticket office.

내가 돌아서는 순간, 나는 내 영국인 관광객 친구들이 매표소를 향해 걸어오는 것을 보았다. 

 

We shared the fare and we commented on the unique differences of the buildings along the canal.

우리는 요금을 분담했고, 운하를 따라 서 있는 건물들의 독특한 차이점에 대해 이야기했다. 

 

We had a nice chat, took some great pictures, and exchanged email addresses before we got off the gondola.

우리는 곤돌라에서 내리기 전에 즐거운 이야기를 하면서 멋진 사진을 몇 장 찍고 이메일 주소를 교환했다. 

 

My trip to Italy was definitely an experience of a lifetime.

이탈리아 여행은 분명히 내 일생의 경험이었다. 

 

I hope my next trip can be to England to visit my British friends.

나는 다음 여행이 나의 영국 친구들을 만나러 영국을 가는 것이 될 수 있기를 바란다. 

 

People say that the world is a book, and that those who do not travel read only one of the pages in it.

사람들이 말하길 세상은 책과 같고 여행을 하지 않는 사람들은 그 책의 페이지들 중 단 한 페이지만 읽은 것이나 다름없다고 한다. 

 

So far, I have read two pages. I hope I have opportunities to read many more pages.

지금까지 나는 두 페이지를 읽었다. 나는 내게 더 많은 페이지를 읽을 수 있는 기회가 있기를 희망한다.
