Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the Center for Environmental Management.

안녕하세요, 여러분. 환경 관리 센터에 오신 것을 환영합니다.

 

I am Kim Jisu, head instructor at the center.

저는 센터의 책임 교사인 김지수라고 해요.

 

 

Today, I'm going to introduce an interesting way of protecting the environment.

오늘 저는 환경을 보호하는 재미있는 방법 하나를 소개할 거예요.

 

Look at this picture. Have you ever seen these arrow symbols?

이 사진을 보세요. 이러한 화살표를 본 적 있나요?

 

You've probably seen the one on the left on products or recycling bins.

여러분들은 아마 왼쪽에 있는 것을 제품이나 재활용 수거함에서 봤을 거예요.

 

Yes, it means "recycle."

맞아요, 그건 ‘재활용’을 의미해요.

 

But what about the symbol where the top arrow points upward?

그렇지만 위쪽 화살이 위를 가리키는 표시는 어떤가요?

 

What does it mean?

그것은 무얼 의미할까요?

 

This is what I'm going to talk about today: upcycling.

이것이 오늘 제가 얘기하고자 하는 바인 새활용이에요.

 

It is a new trend in recycling.

그것은 재활용 계에서 새로운 유행이죠.

 

Let me show you some examples.

몇 가지 예시를 보여줄게요.

 

These are pieces of broken dishes.

이것들은 깨진 접시 조각들이에요.

 

What would you do with them?

그것들로 무엇을 할 것인가요?

 

Would you throw them in the trash?

쓰레기통에 버릴 것인가요?

 

After looking at the next picture, you may change your mind.

다음 사진을 보고나면 아마 여러분들은 마음이 바뀔지도 모릅니다.

 

 

One of the broken pieces has been turned into a lovely item. Isn't it beautiful?

그 깨진 조각들 중 하나가 사랑스러운 제품으로 바뀌었어요. 아름답지 않나요?

 

What do you think this bag is made of?

이 가방이 무엇으로 만들어 졌다고 생각하나요?

 

You wouldn't believe the fact that this nice bag is made of hundreds of ring pulls from empty cans.

이 멋진 가방이 수백 개의 빈 깡통에서 나온 고리 달린 따개로 만들어 진 사실을 믿을 수 없을 거예요.

 

As you can see, upcycling can turn waste into something new and useful.

보시다시피 새활용은 쓰레기를 새롭고 유용한 것들로 바꿀 수 있답니다.

 

The goal of upcycling is the same as that of recycling: to reduce waste by reusing old materials.

새활용의 목적은 재활용의 목적과 같아요. 오래된 재료들을 재사용하여 쓰레기를 줄이는 것이죠.

 

However, upcycling has a greater emphasis on creative and artistic reuse.

그러나 새활용은 창의적이고 예술적인 재사용에 더 큰 강조를 하고 있어요.

 

Upcycled items can be sold on the market as new products.

새활용 된 제품들은 새로운 제품으로 시장에서 팔려요.

 

That's why many people say upcycling turns "trash into treasure."

그래서 많은 사람들이 새활용이 쓰레기를 보물로 바꾼다고 말하죠.

 

 

Now we're going to listen to three people involved in upcycling in different ways.

이제 우리는 다른 방식으로 새활용에 참여하고 있는 세 사람의 이야기를 들을 거예요.

 

Tom (manufacturer, Switzerland) We upcycle old sheets used for covering trucks into tough, eye-catching wallets.

Tom (제조업자, 스위스) 우리는 트럭을 덮는 데에 사용된 오래된 시트를 튼튼하고 눈길을 끄는 지갑으로 새활용 해요.

 

Because the used sheets are usually thrown away, we can get them very cheap.

그 사용된 시트들은 보통 버려지기 때문에 우리는 그것들은 매우 값싸게 구할 수 있어요.

 

But our products, with their unique patterns, are sold at high prices.

그러나 우리의 독특한 패턴을 지닌 제품들은 높은 가격에 팔리죠.

 

I think creative upcycling ideas can lead to a profitable business.

저는 창의적인 새활용하기 생각들이 이익을 내는 사업으로 이어질 수 있다고 생각해요.

제가 그들에게 완전히 새로운 생명을 불어 넣을 수 있다는 사실이 절 설레게 해요.

 

I hope that my artwork will open people's eyes to a new kind of beauty.

저는 제 예술작품으로 새로운 종류의 아름다움에 사람들의 눈이 떠지기를 바라요.

Last year, I got a new school bag as a gift from my uncle.

지난해, 저는 삼촌으로부터 선물로 새 학교 가방을 받았어요.

 

It was cool-looking and unique.

그것은 멋지고 독특했어요.

 

When I heard it was made out of old air bags, I was quite surprised.

그것이 낡은 에어백으로 만들어졌다는 것을 들었을 때, 저는 꽤 놀랐어요.

 

This got me interested in upcycling and eventually led me to join an upcycling club at school.

이것이 제가 새활용에 관심을 갖게 했고 결국 교내 새활용 동아리에 가입하게 만들었어요.

 

Through the club, I made some products and learned plenty of upcycling tips.

그 동아리를 통해 저는 몇 개의 제품을 만들었고 많은 새활용 조언들을 배웠어요.

 

When I gave a paper bead bracelet as a gift to my best friend, she loved it!

제가 종이 구슬 팔찌를 제 가장 친한 친구에게 선물로 줬을 때 그녀는 그걸 매우 좋아했어요.

 

As you have heard, upcycling is widely acknowledged as a great new way to recycle waste.

여러분이 들어온 대로 새활용은 쓰레기를 재활용하는 근사한 새로운 방법으로 널리 인정받고 있습니다.

 

Now it's time to wrap up.

이제 마칠 시간이네요.

 

Through upcycling, you can create beautiful artwork, make money, and help protect the environment.

새활용을 통해서 여러분은 아름다운 예술작품을 창조할 수 있고 돈을 벌 수 있고 환경을 보호하는 것을 도울 수도 있어요.

 

Even if you can't make upcycled products yourself, you can still help out by using them.

스스로 새활용이 된 제품을 만들 수 없더라도 여러분은 여전히 그것들을 사용하면서 도움을 줄 수 있어요.

 

Upcycling is much easier than you think.

새활용은 여러분이 생각하는 것 보다 훨씬 쉽답니다.

Let's Make a Paper Bead Bracelet

종이 구슬 팔찌를 만들어 보아요.

 

1. On the paper, mark every 1 cm along one side.

1. 종이 위에 한쪽 변을 따라서 1 센티미터마다 표시를 하세요.

 

2. On the opposite side, mark the first 0.5 cm.

2. 반대쪽 변에 첫 번째 0.5 센티미터 지점에 표시를 하세요.

 

Then continue to mark every 1 cm starting from there.

그러고 나서 그곳부터 1센티미터마다 계속해서 표시를 하세요.

 

3. Draw lines by connecting the marks on both sides as shown in the picture.

3. 그림에서 보여 지는 것처럼 양쪽 면에 있는 지점들을 연결하여 선을 그리세요.

 

4. Cut along the lines to get long triangles.

4. 선을 따라 잘라서 기다란 삼각형을 만드세요.

 

5. Tape the base of one triangle to a straw.

5. 테이프로 한 삼각형의 밑면을 빨대에 붙이세요.

 

6. Put a glue on the inner side of the triangle and wrap it tightly around the straw.

6. 삼각형의 안쪽 면에 풀을 칠하고 단단하게 빨대를 감싸세요.

 

7. Cut the straw on both ends. Now you have made your first bead. Repeat as needed.

7. 빨대 양쪽 끝을 자르세요. 이제 여러분은 첫 번째 구슬을 만들었어요. 필요한 만큼 반복하세요.

 

8. Thread the beads together on a piece of stretchy string. Tie both ends of the string together.

8. 신축성 있는 끈에 그 구슬들을 꿰세요. 끈의 양쪽 끝을 함께 묶으세요.
