Yuri’s Homestay Experience in Beijing

유리의 베이징에서의 홈스테이 경험

During the summer break, as an exchange student, I visited my school's sister school in Beijing, China.

여름방학 동안에, 교환학생으로 나는 중국의 베이징에 있는 우리학교의 자매학교를 방문했다.

 

Before the trip

여행 전

I searched the Internet to collect as much information as possible to get to know about the country.

나는 그 나라에 관해 알기위해 가능한 한 많은 정보를 수집하고자 인터넷을 검색했다. 

 

I realized it had become very modernized.

나는 그것이 매우 현대화되었다는 것을 알게 되었다. 

 

I also found out that the meanings of colors and numbers are important in Chinese culture.

나는 또한 색깔과 숫자의 의미가 중국의 문화에서 중요하다는 것을 알아냈다. 

 

I practiced greetings in Chinese, hoping that I'd be able to communicate with local people when I first got to China.

내가 중국에 처음 도착했을 때 현지 사람들과 의사소통할 수 있길 바라면서 중국어로 인사하는 것을 연습했다.

 

Meeting my Chinese host family

나의 중국 민박 가족 만나기

As soon as I arrived in Beijing, I met my host family.

베이징에 도착하자마자, 나는 나의 민박 가족을 만났다. 

 

The family had a mother, father, and daughter. Wei, the daughter, was also my classmate.

가족구성원은 엄마, 아빠, 그리고 딸이다. 딸, Wei는 또한 나의 학급친구이다. 

 

Wei's family welcomed me with big smiles. Practicing Chinese before the trip paid off.

Wei의 가족은 환하게 미소 지으며 나를 환영해주었다. 여행 전에 중국어를 연습한 것이 성공적이었다. 

 

A couple of my greetings in Chinese worked!

나의 몇 마디 중국어 인사가 효과가 있었다! 

 

In Wei's room there were a lot of pictures of various Korean singers hung all over the walls.

Wei의 방에는 벽에 온통 걸려있는 다양한 한국 가수들의 많은 사진들이 있었다. 

 

She told me that many of her friends were interested in Korean pop culture.

그녀는 그녀의 친구들 중 많은 수가 한국 대중 문화에 관심이 있다고 말했다. 

 

On the one hand, I was so proud of Korean culture, but on the other hand, I felt bad that I did not know much about Chinese culture.

한편으로는 나는 한국문화가 정말 자랑스러웠지만, 다른 한편으로는 중국문화에 대해 많이 알지 못하는 것이 마음에 걸렸다. 

 

Wei's parents cooked a delicious meal.

Wei의 부모님은 맛있는 식사를 요리하셨다. 

 

Wei's family ate with long chopsticks and rarely used spoons while eating rice.

Wei의 가족은 긴 젓가락으로 식사를 했고 밥을 먹는 동안 숟가락을 거의 사용하지 않았다.

 

At the sister school

자매학교에서

In class, we had to make a traditional Chinese mask for a Chinese opera.

수업시간에, 우리는 중국 연극을 위한 전통 중국 가면을 만들어야만 했다. 

 

I made a white mask because white expresses the pure and innocent spirit of Korean people.

나는 흰색이 한국 사람들의 순수하고 순결한 정신을 표현하기 때문에 흰색 가면을 만들었다. 

 

But for Chinese people, white can be considered a negative color.

하지만 중국 사람들에게, 흰색은 부정적인 색으로 여겨질 수 있다. 

 

For them, white is associated with death.

그들에게, 흰색은 죽음과 관련이 있다. 

 

A classmate of mine used red, which symbolizes good fortune and joy in China.

나의 학급친구는 빨간색을 사용했는데, 그것은 중국에서 행운과 기쁨을 상징한다. 

 

I realized that colors have different meanings in China and Korea.

나는 색깔이 중국과 한국에서 다른 의미를 가진다는 것을 알게 되었다.

 

On the street

After school, Wei's family took me to a restaurant nearby.

방과 후에, Wei의 가족은 근처에 있는 식당에 나를 데려갔다. 

 

According to Wei, it is very common in China to eat out.

Wei에 따르면, 외식하는 것은 중국에서 매우 일반적인 것이다. 

 

Though the smell of the spices in the restaurant was unusual to me, I quite enjoyed the food. The amount was huge.

식당에서 향신료의 냄새가 나에게 생소했지만, 나는 음식을 꽤나 즐겼다. 그 양은 엄청났다. 

 

The table was very big and round, and spun around at the center, which made it easy to share the dishes.

식탁은 매우 크고 둥글며, 중앙에서 회전했는데, 그것은 음식을 나눠 먹는 것을 쉽게 만들었다. 

 

I was told that customers must take any leftover food with them.

나는 손님들이 어떤 남은 음식이든 싸가야 한다고 들었다.

 

After the meal, we walked along the main street. Most of the signs on the stores were red.

식사 후에, 우리는 중심가를 따라 걸었다. 가게에 있는 대부분의 간판은 빨간색이었다. 

 

Food stands sold very interesting food such as fried bugs.

음식 가판대는 벌레 튀김 같은 매우 흥미로운 음식을 팔았다. 

 

I took a bite of a bug, and surprisingly the taste was pretty good.

벌레를 한입 베어 물었고, 놀랍게도 그 맛이 꽤 좋았다. 

 

I also bought a bottle of cola. It was 888 ml, which was quite a strange quantity to me.

나는 또한 콜라 한 병을 샀다. 그것은 888 ml였고, 그것은 나에게 꽤 낯선 양이었다. 

 

The number 8 has long been regarded as the luckiest number in Chinese culture because the sound of it is linked to the meaning of making a fortune.

숫자 8은 그것의 소리가 재산을 축적한다는 의미와 연결이 되어있기 때문에 중국 문화에서 가장 운이 좋은 숫자로 오랫동안 여겨져 왔다.

 

Leaving China

중국을 떠나며

In China, I was able to learn a lot about Chinese culture and history.

중국에서, 나는 중국의 문화와 역사에 관해 많이 배울 수 있었다. 

 

I was impressed when I visited the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace, and the Forbidden City.

나는 중국의 만리장성, 이화원, 자금성을 방문했을 때 인상을 받았다. 

 

Of all the things I did, however, the homestay gave me the best chance to experience real Chinese culture.

하지만, 내가 한 것들 중에서 가정 민박이 나에게 진정한 중국의 문화를 경험할 최고의 기회를 주었다. 

 

I will never forget memories from my stay in China.

나는 중국에서 머무른 기억을 결코 잊지 못할 것이다.
