80일의 세계일주

When Phileas Fogg appeared in the large drawing room, the clock struck 8:45.

Phileas Fogg가 커다란 거실에 나타났을 때, 시계는 8시 45분을 쳤다. 

 

He had just completed his long journey.

그는 그의 긴 여행을 막 마쳤다. 

 

This meant he had won his bet with his colleagues that he could travel around the world in 80 days.

이것은 그가 그의 동료들과 한 그가 80일 안에 세계 일주를 할 수 있다는 그의 내기를 이겼다는 것을 의미했다. 

 

But there was some confusion.

그러나 약간의 혼동이 있었다. 

 

He thought he had arrived in London on Saturday, December 21, but actually, it was Friday, December 20, only 79 days after his initial departure.

Being an extremely precise and careful person, how had he mixed up what day it was?

There is a simple reason for his confusion.

그의 혼동에 관한 간단한 이유가 있다. 

 

Fogg unknowingly had gained a day on his journey―simply because he had gone round the world eastwards.

Fogg는 그도 알아채지 못한 채 그의 여행에서 하루를 얻었다.ㅡ간단하게 그는 동쪽으로 세계 일주를 했기 때문이다. 

 

He would, on the contrary, have lost this day if he had gone in the opposite direction, westwards.

반대로, 만약 그가 반대 방향인, 서쪽으로 갔었더라면, 그는 하루를 잃었을 것이다. 

 

By heading east, Fogg had gone towards the sun, and consequently his days were four minutes shorter for each degree of longitude covered in that direction.

동쪽으로 향하면서, Fogg는 태양을 향해서 갔고, 결과적으로 그의 날들은 그 방향에 걸쳐져 있는 각 경도마다 4분이 짧아졌다. 

 

The earth is three hundred and sixty degrees around, and he went entirely around the earth.

지구는 빙 둘러 360도이고, 그는 완전히 지구를 한 바퀴 돌았다. 

 

Three hundred and sixty multiplied by four minutes is twenty-four hours, or a day.

360 곱하기 40분은 24시간, 즉 하루이다. 

 

Thus, while Fogg, heading eastwards, saw the sun cross the earth 80 times, his colleagues, remaining in London, saw it cross only 79 times.

그러므로 Fogg는 동쪽을 향하면서 태양이 지구를 80번 가로지르는 것을 보는 동안, 런던에 남아있는 그의 동료들은 태양이 오직 79번 가로지는 것을 봤다. 

 

And this was why, on that very same day, Saturday, and not Sunday as Fogg believed, they were waiting for him in the drawing room of the Reform Club.

그래서 Fogg가 믿었던 대로 일요일이 아니라 바로 그날인 토요일에, 그들이 Reform Club의 거실에서 그를 기다리고 있었던 것이었다.
