The Tortoise and the Hare: The Full Story

You have heard or read the story of the tortoise and the hare, haven't you?

But do you know that the story actually has a sequel?

Before getting to that, let's read the first part of the story.

Once upon a time, a tortoise and a hare had an argument about who was faster.
옛날에 거북과 토끼가 누가 더 빠른지에 대해 논쟁을 했습니다.
They decided to settle the argument with a race.

They agreed on a route and started off the race.

The hare shot ahead and ran quickly for some time.

Then, knowing that he was far ahead of the tortoise, he thought he would sit under a tree for a short time and relax before continuing the race.

He sat under the tree and fell asleep.

While slowly walking on and on, the tortoise overtook him and soon finished the race.

The hare woke up and realized that he had lost the race.

However, from the ending of this part of the story, the sequel starts.

The hare was disappointed at losing the race and he did some self-questioning for several days.
토끼는 경주에서 진 것에 실망했고 며칠 동안 자기 (행동에 대한) 반성을 했습니다.
He should have tried harder at that time.
그는 그때 좀 더 열심히 노력했어야 했습니다.
He had lost the race because he had been overconfident.

Therefore, he challenged the tortoise to another race. The tortoise agreed.
그래서 그는 거북에게 다른 경주로 도전장을 내밀었습니다. 거북은 동의했습니다.
As soon as the race started, the hare went all out and ran without stopping from start to finish.
경주가 시작되자마자 토끼는 전력을 다했고 시작부터 끝까지 멈추지 않고 달렸습니다.

He won by several miles.
그는 몇 마일 차이로 이겼습니다.
However, the story didn't end there.
그러나 이야기는 거기서 끝나지 않았습니다.
This time, it was the tortoise's turn to continue the story.
이번에는 거북이 이야기를 계속 이끌어 나갈 차례였습니다.
After losing the race, the tortoise did some thinking and realized that there was no way he could beat the hare in a race the way it was currently designed.
경기에서 진 후, 거북은 여러 생각을 했고 현재의 달리는 방법으로는 경주에서 토끼를 이길 수 있는 방법이 없다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
He thought for a while, and then challenged the hare to another race, but on a slightly different route. The hare agreed.
그는 잠시 동안 생각했고 토끼에게 다른 경주로 도전했지만, 조금 다른 경로였습니다. 토끼는 동의했습니다.
They started off.
그들은 출발했습니다.
In keeping his self-made promise to go fast and not stop, the hare took off and ran at top speed until he came to a broad river.

The finish line was a couple of miles on the other side of the river.

The hare sat there, wondering what to do.

In the meantime, the tortoise caught up to the hare, got into the river, swam to the opposite bank, continued walking, and finished the race.
그 동안 거북은 토끼를 따라잡아 강으로 뛰어들어 반대편 강둑으로 수영을 했고 계속 걸어 경주를 끝냈습니다.
Even though the tortoise won the third race, the story still did not end. The story continues.
거북이 세 번째 경주에서 이겼지만 이야기는 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. 이야기는 계속됩니다.
The hare and the tortoise, by this time, had become pretty good friends, and they did some thinking together.
이번에 토끼와 거북은 꽤 좋은 친구가 되었고 함께 생각을 했습니다.
Both realized that the previous race could have been run much better.
둘은 이전 경주에서 훨씬 더 잘 달릴 수도 있었다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
So they decided to do the last race again but to run as a team this time.
그래서 그들은 다시 마지막 경주를 하지만 이번에는 팀으로서 달릴 것을 결심했습니다.
They started off, and the hare carried the tortoise on his back till the riverbank.

There, the tortoise took over and swam across with the hare on his back.

On the opposite bank, the hare again carried the tortoise, and they reached the finish line together.

They both felt a greater sense of satisfaction than they had felt earlier.

For now, the story ends here.

Nobody knows if these two friends will hold another race.
