Do you think it's possible to grow tomatoes on Mars?

여러분은 화성에서 토마토를 재배하는 것이 가능하다고 생각하는가?

 

You may think that's just limited to our imagination.

여러분은 그것을 우리의 상상으로만 한정된 것이라고 생각할지도 모른다.

 

But with fast-developing science and technology, we may be able to turn such an imaginative idea into reality in the very near future.

그러나 빠르게 성장하는 과학과 기술로, 우리는 매우 가까운 장래에 그런 상상을 현실로 바꿀 수 있을지도 모른다.

 

Recently, a group of scientists from the Netherlands reported impressive result from their Martian soil experiment.

최근, 네덜란드의 한 과학자 그룹이 화성 토양 실험에서 인상적인 결과를 보고했다.

 

They simulated the conditions of growing vegetables on Mars by using soil from a volcano on Hawaii.

그들은 하와이에 있는 화산으로부터 얻은 토양을 사용해서 화성에서 채소를 재배하는 조건을 모의실험했다.

 

They reported that they had succeeded in growing 10 different species, including tomatoes, peas, and radishes, and that the vegetables may actually be safe for humans to eat.

그들은 토마토, 완두콩, 순무를 포함해서 10가지 다양한 종류를 재배하는 데 성공했고, 그 채소들은 실제 사람이 먹기에 안전할 수 있다고 보고했다.

 

They even argued that their vegetables were possibly healthier than those grown in Earth soil.

그들은 심지어 그 채소들이 지구의 토양에서 재배된 것들보다 더 건강에 좋을 가능성이 있다고 주장했다.

 

There are some concerns, however.

그러나 몇 가지 염려할 점들이 있다.

 

The most serious one is related to the safety of eating those plants.

Other scientists pointed out that Martian soil could contain heavy metals like lead and iron, which would make vegetables grown on Mars dangerous for human consumption.

다른 과학자들은 화성의 토양이 납과 철 같은 중금속을 함유할 수 있고, 이것이 화성에서 재배된 채소들이 사람들이 섭취하기에 위험할 수 있음을 지적했다.

 

Nevertheless, it's pretty exciting to know that it's possible to grow food crops in soil on the Red Planet, so we can enjoy a "Martian meal."

그럼에도 불구하고, 그 붉은 행성의 토양에서 식용 작물을 재배할 가능성이 있고, 그래서 우리가 ‘화성의 식사’를 즐길 수 있음을 아는 것은 매우 흥미진진하다.

 

One day, astronauts visiting Mars will be able to sustain themselves with that food.

Surely, the Martian soil experiment could be a significant step toward building colonies on Mars in the future.
