A House on the Road

One day while having fun traveling around the Philippines with my family, we headed to a native village, following a one-lane path scattered with rocks and mud.

어느 날 가족과 필리핀을 여행하며 즐거운 시간을 보내는 동안, 우리는 돌과 진흙이 흩어져 있는 한 차선의 좁은 길을 따라 어떤 원주민 마을로 향했다.

 

With tall grass blocking our view, my father suddenly hit the brakes on a sharp turn.

높게 자란 풀이 우리의 시야를 막아 아버지는 급커브에서 갑자기 브레이크를 밟으셨다.

 

"Wow, is that a house that they are moving?" I asked.

나는 “와, 사람들이 옮기고 있는 게 집인가요?”라고 물었다.

 

"Yes, they're moving an entire house with large bamboo poles.

“그래, 사람들이 커다란 대나무 장대로 집을 통째로 옮기고 있구나.

 

It doesn't look like a newly built house, though." said my father.

하지만 새로 지은 집 같아 보이지는 않네.”라고 아버지가 말씀하셨다.

 

We didn't have the slightest clue as to why they were moving the house.

우리는 그들이 왜 그 집을 옮기고 있는지에 대해 조금도 알 수 없었다.

 

Curious about the unusual sight, my father suggested, "Why don't we pull the car over and find out what they're doing?”

특이한 그 광경에 호기심이 일어 아버지는 “차를 저쪽에 대고 저 사람들이 무엇을 하는지 알아보는 게 어떨까?”라고 제안하셨다.

 

So we got out of the car and walked to the scene to look into it.

그래서 우리는 차에서 내려 그 광경을 살펴보기 위해 그곳으로 걸어갔다.

 

"Can I ask why you're moving the house?" I asked.

“왜 집을 옮기고 계신지 여쭤 봐도 될까요?”라고 나는 물어보았다.

 

And one man said, "The owner built this house down by the river.

그러자 한 남자가 “집주인이 강가 아래쪽에 이 집을 지었죠.

 

But during the rainy season, the water rose quickly and entered the house.

하지만 우기 동안에 물이 갑자기 불어 집으로 들어왔어요.

 

So we all gathered to help the family relocate it to a safer place."

그래서 우리 모두가 그 가족이 집을 더 안전한 곳으로 이동시키는 것을 돕기 위해 모인 거죠.”라고 말했다.

 

Amused at the sight, we waited until the house was placed in a new location.

그 광경이 흥미로워서 우리는 그 집이 새로운 장소에 놓일 때까지 기다렸다.

 

Later I found out that in the Philippines, the practice of moving a house is part of a tradition called bayanihan.

나중에 나는 필리핀에서 집을 옮기는 관행이 bayanihan(바야니한)이라 불리는 전통의 일부라는 것을 알게 되었다.

 

It's based on the spirit of cooperation, which lives on today.

그것은 협동 정신에 기초하는데, 오늘날까지도 계속되고 있다.
