학생 여러분, 안녕하세요. 저는 Michael Aw입니다.

 

I'm here to share my story as a photographer for the past 30 years and hopefully to help you find your own career path.

지난 30년간 사진작가로서의 저의 이야기를 나누고 희망컨대 여러분이 진로를 찾는 데 도움이 될 수 있도록 여기 섰습니다.

 

Let me begin by showing you a picture I took a few years ago along the Wild Coast in South Africa.

몇 년 전 남아프리카의 Wild Coast(와일드 코스트)를 따라가며 찍은 사진을 보여드리며 시작하겠습니다.

 

This huge whale, called a Bryde's whale, is swallowing a huge school of fish whole.

Bryde’s whale(브라이드 고래)이라 불리는 이 거대 고래는 거대한 물고기 떼를 통째로 삼키고 있습니다.

 

As you can see from the angle, I captured this scene from under the fish wearing full diving equipment.

여러분이 그 각도에서 바라보면 알 수 있듯이, 저는 다이빙 장비를 완전히 갖춰 입은 채 그 물고기 떼 밑에서 이 장면을 포착하였습니다.

 

I was lucky that I wasn't swallowed or knocked over by the twelve-meter-long whale.

12미터나 되는 고래에 의해 먹히거나 나가떨어지지 않은 것이 운이 좋았습니다.

 

Anyway, it took eight years and over 5,000 shots before I was in the right place at the right time to take this picture.

어쨌든, 이 사진을 찍기 위해 적시에 그리고 적절한 곳에 있기 전까지 8년하고 5,000장 이상의 사진이 소요되었습니다.

 

I specialize in marine life photography because the love of nature has been one of my guiding principles in life.

저는 자연에 대한 사랑이 삶의 신조 중 하나였기 때문에 해양 생물 사진 촬영을 전문으로 하고 있습니다.

 

I try to capture my oceanic subjects and scenes in their truest form because they are beautiful just as they are.

저는 가장 진실한 형태로 바다의 피사체와 장면을 포착하려고 노력하는데 이는 있는 그대로의 모습만으로 아름답기 때문입니다.

 

My hope is that people will appreciate the beauty in my photos, join preservation efforts, and ultimately love and protect the natural world.

저의 소망은 사람들이 제 사진 속에서 그런 아름다움의 진가를 알아보고, 보존 노력에 동참하며, 궁극적으로는 자연을 사랑하고 보호하는 것입니다.

 

So here's my advice to you today.

그럼 오늘 여러분께 드리는 저의 조언은 이렇습니다.

 

Find a guiding principle, a meaningful idea that you want to be guided by for the rest of your life.

신조, 즉 남은 인생 동안 여러분을 이끌어주기를 바라는 의미 있는 신념을 찾아내세요.

 

My love of nature has guided me thus far.

저의 자연 사랑이 지금까지 저를 인도해 왔습니다.

 

Whatever you choose to do in the future—be it photography, science, dancing, or architecture—that principle will guide you into a successful life. Thank you for listening.
