SCENE I

장면 1

There was once a king.

예전에 어느 왕이 있었다.

 

His palace had a wonderful garden.

그의 궁전에는 아름다운 정원이 있었다.

 

But there was one problem—an ugly old tree.

그러나 한 가지 문제가 있었다. 그것은 못생기고 오래된 나무였다.

 

The king was walking in the garden with the queen.

왕은 왕비와 함께 정원을 걷고 있었다.

 

He said, "That old tree looks so ugly, doesn't it?"

그는 말했다. “저 오래된 나무는 너무 못생겼어요, 그렇지요?”

 

"Yes! Let's take that tree away!" said the queen.

“네! 저 나무를 없애 버려요!” 왕비가 말했다.

 

Months and years went by.

몇 달, 몇 년이 지났다.

 

All the birds flew away, and the plants died.

모든 새들이 날아가 버렸고, 식물들도 죽었다.

 

The king wanted to know why, but nobody knew the answer.

왕은 그 이유를 알고 싶었지만, 어느 누구도 답을 알지 못했다.

 

He missed his beautiful garden.

그는 아름다웠던 정원이 그리웠다.

 

SCENE II

장면 2

 

One day, a young man came to see the king.

어느 날, 한 청년이 왕을 보러 왔다.

 

The king was looking at the garden.

왕은 정원을 보고 있었다.

 

"Your Majesty, your garden needs moths," he said.

“폐하, 폐하의 정원에는 나방이 필요합니다.” 그가 말했다.

 

“He is talking nonsense, isn't he?”

“그는 허튼소리를 하고 있군. 그렇지 않나?”

 

"What do you mean?" asked the king.

“무슨 뜻인가?” 왕이 물었다.

 

"Twenty years ago, my father brought an old tree from here and planted it in our garden.

“20년 전에, 제 아버지가 여기에서 오래된 나무를 가져와 우리 정원에 심었습니다.

 

Many moths lived in the tree, and their poop fell to the ground.

많은 나방들이 그 나무에 살았고, 나방의 똥이 땅에 떨어졌습니다.

 

Moth poop is good for gardens, so many new plants grew up around the old tree.

나방의 똥은 정원에 좋습니다. 그래서 많은 새로운 식물들이 그 오래된 나무 주변에서 자라났습니다.

 

Now we have many trees and birds in the garden," said the young man.

이제 우리 정원에는 많은 나무들과 새들이 있습니다.” 청년이 말했다.

 

"Excellent! Bring my old tree back!" shouted the king.

“좋아! 나의 오래된 나무를 돌려주게!” 왕이 소리쳤다.

 

SCENE III

장면 3

 

“Your Majesty,” said the young man.

“폐하.” 청년이 말했다.

 

“The tree cannot make a garden in a year. It takes many years.”

“그 나무로 일 년 만에 정원을 만들 수 없습니다. 오랜 세월이 걸립니다.”

 

The king looked sad.

왕은 슬퍼 보였다.

 

“But our garden is not just ours.

“그러나 저희 정원은 단지 저희의 것만은 아닙니다.

 

Everything in our garden came from yours.

저희 정원의 모든 것은 폐하의 정원에서 온 것입니다.

 

We just take good care of it.”

저희는 그저 그것을 잘 돌본 것뿐입니다.”

 

“What a wise man!” said the king.

“이렇게 현명한 청년이라니!” 왕이 말했다.

 

He smiled from ear to ear.

그는 입이 귀에 걸릴 정도로 활짝 미소를 지었다.

 

The young man became Sir Green.

청년은 Green 경(정원을 관리하는 직책)이 되었다.

 

He and the king took care of the gardens in the kingdom together.

그와 왕은 왕국의 정원들을 함께 돌보았다.

 

Everyone in the kingdom loved them.

왕국의 모든 사람들이 정원을 사랑했다.
