Suji's Trip to Geojedo

수지의 거제도 여행

It was my great-grandfather's 90th birthday last week.

지난주는 나의 증조할아버지의 90번째 생신이었다. 

 

To celebrate this special day, my family decided to take a trip.

이 특별한 날을 기념하기 위해, 나의 가족은 여행을 가기로 결정했다. 

 

He is quite old, but healthy enough to take a short trip.

증조할아버지는 나이가 꽤 드셨지만, 짧은 여행을 할 수 있을 만큼 충분히 건강하시다. 

 

He has always wanted to visit Geojedo, and we agreed to take him there.

그는 항상 거제도를 방문하기를 원하셨고, 우리는 그곳에 그를 모시고 가는 것에 동의했다. 

 

Among many tourist attractions, we chose to visit two places: the Geoje POW Camp and Haegeumgang.

많은 관광 명소 중에서 우리는 거제 포로수용소와 해금강 두 곳을 방문하기로 정했다.

I was really looking forward to this trip with my great-grandfather.

나는 증조할아버지와의 이번 여행이 정말 기대되었다. 

 

August 13th

8월 13일

We visited the Historic Park of Geoje POW Camp.

우리는 거제 포로수용소 유적 공원을 방문했다. 

 

It was large enough to display various things about the Korean War.

그곳은 한국 전쟁에 관한 다양한 것들을 전시할 만큼 충분히 컸다. 

 

At first, I was scared to see them. Life back then seemed so hard and horrible.

처음에 나는 그것들을 보고 무서웠다. 당시의 삶은 너무 힘들고 끔찍해 보였다. 

 

Then, my great-grandfather said that he wanted to share his story with us.

그때, 증조할아버지께서 자신의 이야기를 우리와 나누고 싶다고 말씀하셨다. 

 

It was interesting enough to listen to.

그것은 귀를 기울일 만큼 매우 흥미로웠다. 

 

He was a North Korean soldier during the Korean War.

그는 한국 전쟁 동안 북한군이셨다. 

 

He was taken prisoner and sent to the Geoje POW Camp.

그는 포로로 잡혀서 거제 포로수용소로 보내지셨다. 

 

Here, he thought day and night and decided to start a new life in South Korea.

이곳에서 그는 밤낮으로 생각하셨고 남한에서 그의 새로운 삶을 시작하기로 결심하셨다. 

 

I knew that he was from the North, but I didn't know about his painful past. I felt really sorry for him.

나는 할아버지가 북한에서 오신 것은 알고 있었지만 그의 고통스러운 과거에 관해서는 알지 못했다. 나는 할아버지가 정말 안타까웠다.

 

August 14th

8월 14일

Luckily, the weather was good enough to take a tour of Haegeumgang on a ship.

운이 좋게도, 배를 타고 해금강 관광을 할 수 있을 만큼 날씨가 충분히 좋았다. 

 

I was amazed at the sight and my great-grandfather agreed with me.

나는 그 광경에 정말 놀랐고 증조할아버지도 나와 의견이 같으셨다. 

 

He said, "I've never seen such a beautiful place."

그는 “난 이렇게 아름다운 곳을 본 적이 없어.”라고 말씀하셨다. 

 

The ocean view of rocks and islands was amazing.

바위들과 섬들의 바다 경관은 놀라웠다. 

 

The color of the water was so bright and clear.

물 색깔은 너무나 선명하고 맑았다. 

 

I was proud that there is such a wonderful place in Korea.

나는 한국에 그렇게 멋진 장소가 있다는 것이 자랑스러웠다. 

 

On my way back home, I remembered my great-grandfather's story and the beauty of the island.

집으로 돌아오는 길에 나는 증조할아버지의 이야기와 그 섬의 아름다움이 기억났다. 

 

I hope that I can take another trip with my great-grandfather.

나는 다른 여행도 증조할아버지와 함께 갈 수 있기를 바란다. 

 

Maybe we can visit North Korea someday.

아마도 우리는 언젠가 북한을 방문할 수 있을 것이다.
