Let’s Talk about Upcycling

업사이클링에 대해 이야기해 봅시다

Mr. Brown: Hello, club members.

Brown 선생님: 동아리 회원 여러분, 안녕하세요.

 

As you know, this year’s Environment Day is about upcycling.

여러분도 알다시피, 올해 환경의 날은 업사이클링에 관한 것입니다.

 

Before we talk about each group’s event idea for that day, I want you to understand the meaning of “upcycling.”

각 그룹이 그날에 할 행사 아이디어를 이야기하기 전에, 나는 여러분이 '업사이클링'의 의미를 이해하기를 바랍니다.

 

Can anyone explain upcycling?

누가 업사이클링을 설명해 줄 수 있나요?

 

Sumi: Yes. The word “upcycling” is a combination of “upgrade” and “recycling.”

수미: 네. 'upcycling'이라는 단어는 'upgrade'와 ‘recycling'이 결합한 것입니다.

 

Eric: Like recycling, upcycling is good for the environment.

Eric: 재활용과 마찬가지로, 업사이클링도 환경에 좋습니다.

 

When you upcycle, you make new and better things from old things.

업사이클링을 하면 낡은 것을 새롭고 더 좋은 것으로 만들죠.

 

Mr. Brown: Good. Now, let’s talk about each group’s idea for the event. Let’s start with Pei’s group

Brown 선생님: 좋아요. 이제 각 그룹의 행사 아이디어에 대해 이야기해 봅시다. Pei의 그룹부터 시작하죠.

 

Pei: My group wants to hold a trashion show.

Pei: 저희 그룹은 트래션 쇼를 열고 싶습니다.

 

“Trashion” is a combination of “trash” and “fashion.”

‘trashion’은 ‘trash’와 ‘fashion’이 결합한 말입니다.

 

We’ll use trash to make clothes.

저희는 옷을 만들기 위해 쓰레기를 사용할 겁니다.

 

We want other students to become interested in upcycling through the show.

저희는 이 쇼를 통해서 다른 학생들이 업사이클링에 관심을 갖게 되기를 바랍니다.

 

Mr. Brown: A trashion show sounds like fun!

Brown 선생님: 트래션 쇼라니 재미있겠네요!

 

What about your group, Eric?

Eric, 너희 그룹은 어떠니?

 

Eric: My group is going to make musical instruments from old things.

Eric: 저희 그룹은 낡은 물건으로 악기를 만들려고 합니다.

 

We’ll make drums from old plastic buckets.

저희는 낡은 플라스틱 양동이로 드럼을 만들 겁니다.

 

We’ll also make a guitar from old boxes and rubber bands.

저희는 또한 낡은 상자와 고무줄로 기타를 만들 겁니다.

 

We plan to play the instruments in a mini-concert.

저희는 소규모 음악회에서 그 악기들을 연주할 계획입니다.

 

Mr. Brown: Thank you, Eric. Now, let’s hear from Sumi’s group.

Brown 선생님: 고마워요, Eric. 그럼 이제 수미의 그룹의 아이디어를 들어 보죠.

 

Sumi: My group will make bags from old clothes.

수미: 저희 그룹은 낡은 옷으로 가방을 만들 거예요.

 

For example, we’ll use blue jeans.

예를 들면, 저희는 청바지를 사용할 거예요.

 

Look at this bag.

이 가방을 보세요.

 

This was made by Hajun, one of our group members. Isn’t it nice?

이것은 저희 모둠원 중 한 명인 하준이가 만들었어요. 멋지지 않나요?

 

We’ll make more bags and sell them on Environment Day.

저희는 가방을 더 많이 만들어서 환경의 날에 팔 거예요.

 

We’re going to give all the money to a nursing home.

저희는 번 돈을 모두 양로원에 드릴 예정이에요.

 

Mr. Brown: That’s a great idea.

Brown 선생님: 훌륭한 생각이군요.

 

Your ideas are all so creative.

여러분의 아이디어는 모두 무척 창의적이에요.

Blue Jeans Bag

청바지 가방

You Need: old blue jeans, sewing kit, scissors, pins and buttons

준비물: 낡은 청바지, 바느질 도구, 가위, 핀과 단추

 

Step 1. Cut off the legs of the blue jeans.

단계 1. 청바지의 다리 부분을 잘라 내세요.

 

2. Sew the bottom together.

2. 맨 아랫부분을 바느질하여 붙이세요.

 

3. Make shoulder straps from one of the legs.

3. 다리 중 한 쪽으로 어깨끈들을 만드세요.

 

4. Sew the straps to the top of the jeans.

4. 청바지의 맨 윗부분에 끈들을 바느질하여 붙이세요.

 

5. Decorate the bag with pins and buttons.

5. 핀과 단추로 가방을 장식하세요.
