Animals That Use Tools

도구를 사용하는 동물들

People once thought that only humans can use tools.

사람들은 한때 인간만이 도구를 사용할 수 있다고 생각했다.

 

Now, scientists are finding out that many animals can also use tools.

이제는 과학자들이 많은 동물들 역시 도구를 사용할 수 있다는 것을 알아내고 있다.

 

Macaque Monkeys

마카크 원숭이

If you go to a Buddhist temple in Lop Buri, Thailand, watch out for the Macaque monkeys.

만약 여러분이 태국 롭부리의 불교 사원에 간다면, 마카크 원숭이를 조심해라.

 

They may come to you and pull out your hair.

그 원숭이들이 여러분에게 다가와 여러분의 머리카락을 뽑을 수도 있다.

 

They use human hair to floss their teeth.

그들은 이빨을 치실질하기 위해서 사람의 머리카락을 사용한다.

 

If you are lucky, you may see female monkeys that are teaching flossing to their babies.

운이 좋으면 여러분은 새끼들에게 치실질을 가르치고 있는 암컷 원숭이들을 볼 수 있을지도 모른다.

 

While the babies are watching, the female monkeys floss their teeth very slowly.

새끼들이 지켜보고 있는 동안, 암컷 원숭이들은 아주 천천히 자신의 이빨을 치실질한다.

 

This way, the baby monkeys learn to floss.

이렇게 해서, 새끼 원숭이들은 치실질하는 것을 배운다.

 

Octopuses

문어

People don’t usually think that octopuses are smart.

사람들은 대개 문어가 영리하다고 생각하지 않는다.

 

However, octopuses are very smart, and they can also use tools.

하지만, 문어는 매우 영리하고 또한 도구를 사용할 수 있다.

 

They use coconut shells for protection.

그들은 자신을 보호하기 위해 코코넛 껍데기를 사용한다.

 

When they can’t find a good hiding place, they hide under coconut shells.

그들은 숨을 만한 좋은 장소를 찾지 못할 때 코코넛 껍데기 아래에 숨는다.

 

Some octopuses even store coconut shells for later use.

Crows

In Aesop’s fable The Thirsty Crow, a crow drops stones into a jar to raise the level of water.

이솝 우화 '목마른 까마귀'에서, 까마귀는 물의 높이를 높이기 위해 항아리 안으로 돌을 떨어뜨린다.

 

You may think this is just a story, but it is not.

이것이 그저 이야기라고 생각할 수도 있지만, 그렇지 않다.

 

Scientists who were studying crows did an experiment.

까마귀를 연구하고 있던 과학자들이 실험을 하나 했다.

 

They put a jar with water in front of a crow.

그들은 까마귀 한 마리 앞에 물이 든 항아리를 놓았다.

 

A worm was floating on top of the water.

물 위에는 벌레 한 마리가 떠 있었다.

 

However, the water level was low, so the crow could not eat the worm.

하지만 물 높이가 낮아서 그 까마귀는 그 벌레를 먹을 수 없었다.

 

The crow solved the problem just as in the fable.

그 까마귀는 우화에서처럼 문제를 해결했다.

 

It dropped stones into the jar.

그 까마귀는 돌을 항아리 안으로 떨어뜨렸다.

 

If you think this bird is special, you are wrong.

만약 이 새가 특별하다고 생각한다면, 당신은 틀렸다.

 

Scientists did the same experiment with other crows, and they all did the same, too.

과학자들은 다른 까마귀들에게도 똑같은 실험을 했고, 그 까마귀들도 모두 똑같이 행동했다.
