An Interview with Dr. Park Byeong-seon

박병선 박사와의 인터뷰

On May 27, 2011, 297 books of Uigwe, a collection of royal books the French army took in 1866, came back to Korea.

2011년 5월 27일에, 프랑스군이 1866년에 가져갔던 왕실 서적인 ‘의궤’ 297권이 한국으로 돌아왔다.

 

The person behind this return is Dr. Park Byeong-seon, a historian who spent her whole life searching for Korean national treasures abroad.

이 반환 뒤에 있던 인물이 해외에 있는 한국의 문화재를 찾기 위해 평생을 바친 역사학자 박병선 박사이다.

 

Can you tell me how you became interested in Uigwe?

‘의궤’에 어떻게 관심을 갖게 되셨는지 말씀해 주시겠어요?

 

Dr. Park: I studied history in college.

Dr. Park: 저는 대학에서 역사를 공부했어요.

 

I went to France to continue my studies in 1955.

저는 1955년에 학업을 계속하기 위해 프랑스에 갔습니다.

 

As you know, the French army took many of our national treasures in 1866.

아시다시피, 프랑스군은 1866년에 우리 문화재를 많이 가져갔어요.

 

I wanted to find them while I was studying there.

저는 그곳에서 공부하는 동안 그것들을 찾고 싶었어요.

 

Uigwe was one of them.

‘의궤’는 그것들 중 하나였지요.

 

You found 297 books of Uigwe in the National Library of France, in Paris.

당신은 파리에 있는 프랑스 국립도서관에서 297권의 ‘의궤’를 발견하셨어요.

 

Please tell me how you found them.

그것들을 어떻게 발견하셨는지 말씀해 주세요.

 

 

Dr. Park: As soon as I became a researcher at the National Library in 1967, I began to look for Uigwe.

Dr. Park: 1967년에 국립도서관의 연구원이 되자마자, 저는 ‘의궤’를 찾기 시작했어요.

 

After 10 years, in 1977, I finally found the books.

10년 후인 1977년에 마침내 그 책들을 발견했죠.

 

I think I looked at more than 30 million books.

제 생각에 3천만 권 이상의 책을 본 것 같아요.

 

I’m sure you were very excited when you found the books.

그 책들을 발견했을 때 분명히 무척 흥분하셨겠어요.

 

Dr. Park: Yes, I was, but more difficulties were waiting for me.

Dr. Park: 네, 그랬죠. 하지만 더 많은 어려움이 저를 기다리고 있었어요.

 

I thought that the books should be returned to Korea, but my bosses at the library didn’t like that idea.

저는 그 책들이 한국에 반환 되어야 한다고 생각했지만, 도서관의 제 상사들은 그 생각을 좋아하지 않았어요.

 

They even thought that I was a Korean spy and fired me.

그들은 심지어 제가 한국의 스파이라고 생각해서 저를 해고했죠.

 

After that, I had to go to the library as a visitor, so it was not easy to do research on Uigwe.

그 후에, 저는 방문객으로 도서관에 가야만 했고, 그래서 ‘의궤’를 연구하는 것이 쉽지 않았어요.

 

However, I didn’t give up.

하지만 저는 포기하지 않았죠.

 

For more than ten years, I went to the library every day to finish my research.

10년 넘게, 연구를 끝마치기 위해 매일 도서관에 갔어요.

 

I wanted to show people the value of Uigwe.

저는 사람들에게 ‘의궤’의 가치를 보여 주고 싶었어요.

 

The results of your research were published as a book in Korea in 1990.

당신의 연구 결과가 1990년 한국에서 책으로 출판 되었죠.

 

Many Koreans became interested in Uigwe because of your book.

많은 한국인들이 당신의 책 때문에 ‘의궤’에 관심을 갖게 되었어요.

 

 

Dr. Park: Yes. In 1992, the Korean government asked the French government for its return and, finally, the 297 books are here now

Dr. Park: 네. 1992년에 한국 정부는 프랑스 정부에 그것의 반환을 요청했고, 마침내 297권의 책이 지금 여기 있게 된 거죠.

 

Before I finish this interview, I’d like to ask you about Jikji, a book that changed the history of printing.

이 인터뷰를 마치기 전에, 인쇄의 역사를 바꾼 책인 ‘직지’에 대해 여쭙고 싶어요.

 

Dr. Park: I found it in my first year at the library.

Dr. Park: 저는 도서관에서 근무한 첫해에 그것을 발견했어요.

 

I knew right away that it was very special.

저는 그것이 아주 특별하다는 것을 바로 알았어요.

 

I worked hard to prove its value and finally succeeded.

저는 그것의 가치를 증명하기 위해 열심히 연구했고, 마침내 성공했죠.

 

At a book exhibition in Paris in 1972, Jikji was displayed as the oldest book in the world that was printed with movable metal type.

1972년에 파리의 한 도서 박람회에서 ‘직지’는 금속활자로 인쇄된 세계에서 가장 오래된 책으로 전시되었죠.

 

Dr. Park, thanks to your hard work, Jikji and Uigwe were found, and all Koreans thank you for that.

박 박사님, 당신의 노고 덕분에 ‘직지’와 ’의궤‘가 발견되었고, 모든 한국인들이 그 점을 당신에게 감사 하고 있어요.

 

Dr. Park: I hope people will become more interested in our national treasures abroad and work for their return

Dr. Park: 저는 사람들이 해외에 있는 우리의 문화재에 더 많은 관심을 갖고 그것의 반환을 위해 애써 주시기를 바랍니다.
