Same Story, Different Paintings

같은 이야기, 다른 그림

We often find different paintings with the same subject.

우리는 종종 같은 주제의 다른 그림들을 발견한다. 

 

An example is The Flight of Icarus by Henri Matisse and The Fall of Icarus by Marc Chagall.

한 예가 Henri Matisse가 그린 ‘The Flight of Icarus(이카로스의 비행)’와 Marc Chagall이 그린 ‘The Fall of Icarus(이카로스의 추락)’이다. 

 

They are both about the same Greek myth.

그 그림들은 둘 다 같은 그리스 신화에 관한 것이다.

 

 

The Greek Myth of Icarus

Icarus에 관한 그리스 신화

Daedalus was a great inventor.

Daedalus는 훌륭한 발명가였다. 

 

King Minos liked Daedalus’ work so much that he wanted to keep Daedalus with him forever.

Minos왕은 Daedalus의 작품을 몹시 좋아해서 Daedalus를 자신의 곁에 영원히 두고 싶어 했다. 

 

Daedalus, however, tried to leave, so the King kept him and his son, Icarus, in a tall tower.

그러나 Daedalus는 떠나려고 했고, 그러자 왕은 그와 그의 아들인 Icarus를 높은 탑에 가두었다. 

 

Daedalus wanted to escape.

Daedalus는 탈출하고 싶었다. 

 

One day, Daedalus saw birds flying.

어느 날, Daedalus는 새가 날고 있는 것을 보았다. 

 

“Wings! I need wings!” he shouted.

“날개! 날개가 필요해!” 그가 외쳤다. 

 

Daedalus then gathered bird feathers and glued them together with wax.

그러고 나서 Daedalus는 새의 깃털을 모아서 그것들을 밀랍으로 붙였다. 

 

When the wings were ready, he warned his son, “Don’t fly too close to the sun. The wax will melt.”

날개가 준비되었을 때, 그는 아들에게 경고했다. “태양에 너무 가까이 날지 말거라. 밀랍이 녹을 거야.” 

 

Daedalus and Icarus began to fly.

Daedalus와 Icarus는 날기 시작했다. 

 

Icarus was so excited that he forgot his father’s warning.

Icarus는 너무 흥분해서 아버지의 경고를 잊었다. 

 

He flew higher and higher, and the wax began to melt.

그는 점점 더 높이 날았고, 밀랍은 녹기 시작했다. 

 

“Oh, no! I’m falling,” Icarus cried out.

“오, 안 돼! 나는 추락하고 있어.” Icarus는 비명을 질렀다. 

 

Icarus fell into the sea and died.

Icarus는 바다로 떨어져서 죽었다.

 

 

Two Different Paintings

두 개의 다른 그림 

Matisse and Chagall both deal with the same subject in their paintings, but they are different.

Matisse와 Chagall 둘 다 그들의 그림에서 같은 주제를 다루었지만, 그 그림들은 다르다. 

 

First, in Matisse’s painting, you can see Icarus flying, but in Chagall’s painting, the boy is falling.

첫째, Matisse의 그림에서는 Icarus가 날고 있는 것을 볼 수 있지만, Chagall의 그림에서는 그가 추락하고 있다. 

 

This difference comes from the different ideas that the two painters had.

이러한 차이는 두 화가들이 갖고 있던 서로 다른 생각에서 기인한다. 

 

Matisse thought that Icarus was brave and adventurous.

Matisse는 Icarus가 용감하고 모험심이 강하다고 생각했다. 

 

In contrast, Chagall thought that Icarus was foolish.

반면에, Chagall은 Icarus가 어리석다고 생각했다.

 

Second, Matisse’s painting is very simple, but Chagall’s painting has many details.

둘째, Matisse의 그림은 매우 단순하지만, Chagall의 그림에는 세부적인 것들이 많다. 

 

In Matisse’s painting, there are only Icarus and some stars.

Matisse의 그림에는 Icarus와 몇 개의 별들만 있다. 

 

Furthermore, Icarus’ body has just a simple outline.

게다가 Icarus의 몸은 단지 단순한 윤곽만으로 되어 있다. 

 

In contrast, Chagall painted many people and houses in addition to Icarus.

반면에, Chagall은 Icarus뿐만 아니라 많은 사람들과 집들을 그렸다. 

 

This difference comes from the different painting styles of the two painters.

이러한 차이는 두 화가의 서로 다른 화풍에서 기인한다. 

 

Whose painting do you like more?

여러분은 누구의 그림이 더 좋은가? 

 

People will have different answers because they may see the same thing in different ways.

사람들은 같은 것을 다른 방식들로 볼 수도 있기 때문에 서로 다른 대답을 할 것이다.
