Where Is Daddy?

아빠는 어디에 있지?

My name is Jimmy.

내 이름은 Jimmy다.

 

I am in the eighth grade and my sister, Hope, is in the third grade.

나는 8학년이고, 내 여동생 Hope는 3학년이다.

 

My father is a banker and my mother is a teacher.

우리 아버지는 은행원이시고, 어머니는 선생님이시다.

 

We have a dog, Smiley. Sounds pretty normal, right?

우리에겐 Smiley라는 개가 한 마리 있다. 꽤 평범한 것 같다. 그렇지?

 

But a crazy thing happened last week.

그런데 정말 이상한 일이 지난주에 일어났다.

 

My father usually comes home late from work.

우리 아버지는 보통 회사에서 늦게 집에 오신다.

 

So, we only see him on the weekends.

그래서 우리는 주말에만 아버지를 본다.

 

Even then, he usually sleeps or watches television.

주말에도 아버지는 보통 주무시거나 텔레비전을 보신다.

 

But last Friday, he came home early for dinner.

하지만 지난주 금요일에 아버지는 저녁을 드시러 일찍 집에 오셨다.

 

At the table, we were all doing our own thing.

식탁에서 우리는 모두 각자의 일을 하고 있었다.

 

Hope was giving food to Smiley.

Hope는 Smiley에게 음식을 주고 있었다.

 

My mother was telling her not to do so.

어머니는 동생에게 그러지 말라고 말씀하고 계셨다.

 

I was texting.

나는 문자를 보내고 있었다.

 

 

My father said, "Pass me the bread, please."

아버지가 말씀하셨다. “빵 좀 줘요.”

 

No one heard him, so he asked again, "Can someone pass me the bread?"

아무도 그의 말을 듣지 못하자, 아버지는 다시 물으셨다. “누구 나한테 빵 좀 전달해 줄래?”

 

I heard him this time, but I was too busy with my phone.

이번에 나는 아버지의 말을 들었지만 휴대 전화에 빠져 너무 바빴다.

 

My mother was yelling, "Don’t feed Smiley!"

어머니는 소리치고 계셨다. “Smiley한테 음식을 주지 마!”

 

Hope was feeding Smiley.

Hope는 Smiley에게 먹이를 주고 있었다.

 

Smiley was jumping up and down.

Smiley는 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰고 있었다.

 

My father shouted, "Am I invisible? Pass me the bread!”

아버지가 소리치셨다. “내가 안 보이는 거야? 빵 좀 줘!”

 

Then, it happened. Poof!

그때 일이 벌어졌다. 뿅!

 

My father disappeared like magic.

아버지가 마법처럼 사라지셨다.

 

He became invisible!

아버지는 투명 인간이 되셨다!

 

We could hear him, but we couldn't see him.

우리는 그의 말을 들을 수는 있었지만 그를 볼 순 없었다.

 

We asked, "Where are you?"

우리는 물었다. “어디 계세요?”

 

"I'm right in front of you," he replied.

아버지가 대답하셨다. “너희들 바로 앞에 있어.”

 

 

We couldn't do anything for him.

우리는 그를 위해 할 수 있는 게 없었다.

 

It was an awful night.

끔찍한 밤이었다.

 

Next morning, we went to the hospital and asked the doctor to help us.

다음 날 아침, 우리는 병원에 가서 의사 선생님에게 도움을 요청했다.

 

I said, "He has been invisible since last night."

내가 말했다. “아버지가 어젯밤부터 안 보여요.”

 

The doctor shook his head and said, "I can't help you. I've never seen anything like this before.

의사 선생님은 고개를 저으며 말씀하셨다. “도와 드릴 수가 없네요. 이런 건 본 적이 없어요.”

 

When we came home, Hope said, "I miss Daddy."

집에 왔을 때 Hope가 말했다. “아빠가 보고 싶어요.”

 

She started crying. My mother joined her.

그녀는 울기 시작했다. 어머니가 같이 우셨다.

 

In a few moments, we were a sea of tears.

곧 우리는 눈물바다가 되었다.

 

"Come back, Dad! I promise to pass you the bread every day!" I cried.

“돌아오세요, 아빠! 매일 아빠한테 빵을 드리겠다고 약속해요!” 내가 외쳤다.

 

Then, it happened. My father appeared again!

그때 일이 일어났다. 아버지가 다시 나타나셨다!

 

He hugged us and said, "Thank you for all the attention. I promise to come home earlier and play with you on the weekends.“

아버지가 우리를 안고 말씀하셨다. “관심 가져 줘서 고마워. 집에 더 일찍 오고 주말에는 너희와 함께 놀겠다고 약속하마.”
