Do you have a favorite K-pop idol?

여러분은 가장 좋아하는 K팝 아이돌이 있는가?

 

Many students will answer, “Yes.”

많은 학생들이 “그렇다.”라고 답할 것이다.

 

These students often show great love for their stars.

이 학생들은 종종 자신들의 스타를 향해 큰 애정을 보인다.

 

Some scream madly at concerts.

어떤 학생들은 콘서트에서 미친 듯이 괴성을 지른다.

 

Others wait hours to take pictures of their stars.

다른 학생들은 스타의 사진을 찍기 위해 몇 시간을 기다린다.

 

Some students even travel to another city to see their favorite stars.

어떤 학생들은 심지어 가장 좋아하는 스타를 보기 위해 다른 도시로 여행을 가기도 한다.

 

Are idols a recent creation? No way!

아이돌이 최근의 창조물일까? 아니다!

 

Did idols begin with The Beatles in the 1960’s?

아이돌은 1960년대의 The Beatles에서 시작됐을까?

 

They were loved by many, but they were not the first.

그들은 많은 사람들에게 사랑받았지만, 최초는 아니었다.

To find the answer, let’s take a time machine to a concert hall in Vienna in 1845.

답을 찾기 위해서, 1845년에 빈에 있는 콘서트홀로 타임머신을 타고 가 보자.

 

All the seats are filled.

모든 좌석이 꽉 차 있다.

 

Unlike other concerts, the side of the piano faces the audience.

다른 연주회와는 달리, 피아노의 옆면이 청중을 향해 있다.

 

This way, the audience can see the handsome 185cm pianist better.

이렇게 함으로써, 청중은 잘생긴 185cm의 피아니스트를 더 잘 볼 수 있다.

He builds up speed, and his long fingers press down on many keys at once.

그는 속도를 점점 올리고, 그의 긴 손가락으로 많은 건반을 한꺼번에 누른다.

 

This makes the music very powerful and rich.

이것은 음악을 아주 힘 있고 풍성하게 만든다.

 

The audience pays attention to his every little body movement.

청중은 그의 모든 작은 몸짓에 주의를 집중한다.

 

His long beautiful hair flies everywhere.

그의 길고 아름다운 머리카락이 사방에 날린다.

 

It’s like watching a piano and ballet performance at once.

그것은 마치 피아노와 발레 공연을 동시에 보는 것 같다.

 

Time flies and the concert ends.

시간은 쏜살같이 흐르고 연주회가 끝난다.

 

People scream and throw flowers and pieces of clothing onto the stage.

사람들은 소리를 지르며 꽃과 옷을 무대로 던진다.

 

The concert hall goes wild!

콘서트홀은 열광의 도가니이다!

이 놀라운 스타는 누구였을까?

 

His name was Franz Liszt and he was born in 1811 in Hungary.

그의 이름은 Franz Liszt였고 그는 1811년에 헝가리에서 태어났다.

 

He first started playing the piano when he was seven.

그는 일곱 살 때 처음 피아노를 치기 시작했다.

 

Liszt later became a great pianist, composer and teacher.

Liszt는 나중에 훌륭한 피아니스트이며 작곡가이자 선생님이 되었다.

 

But many people think of him as the first idol.

그러나 많은 사람들은 그를 첫 번째 아이돌이라고 생각한다.
