Jina: Welcome to the Super Science Magic Show!

지나: 특별 과학 마술 쇼에 오신 것을 환영합니다!

 

It's always exciting to see magic tricks.

마술을 보는 것은 항상 신나는 일입니다.

 

And it's more exciting to find out the secrets behind them.

그리고 마술 뒤에 숨겨진 비밀을 알아내는 것은 더 신나는 일입니다.

 

Some people think the secret of magic is science.

어떤 사람들은 마술의 비밀이 과학이라고 생각합니다.

 

Today, Ken, a member of the School Magic Club, will use science to perform his tricks.

오늘 학교 마술 동아리 회원인 Ken은 마술을 수행하기 위해 과학을 이용할 것입니다.

 

Which tricks will he show us?

The Amazing Rising Water

신비한 솟아오르는 물

 

Ken: Hello, everyone. Today, I'm going to show you something amazing.

Ken: 안녕하세요, 여러분. 오늘 저는 여러분에게 놀라운 무언가를 보여 주려고 합니다.

 

Here's a dish with water in it.

여기에 물이 담긴 접시가 있습니다.

 

Now, I'll put a candle in the middle of the dish.

이제, 저는 접시 한가운데에 초를 놓을 것입니다.

 

Next, I'll light the candle and cover it with a glass.

그다음에 초에 불을 켜고 유리컵으로 초를 덮어 보겠습니다.

 

“Abracadabra!”

“아브라카다브라!”

 

Jina: Look at the water! How come it rose into the glass?

지나: 물을 보세요! 어째서 물이 유리컵 속으로 올라간 거지요?

 

Ken: Air expands when it gets hot and creates higher pressure.

Ken: 공기가 뜨거워지면 팽창해서 더 높은 압력을 만듭니다.

 

When it gets cold, air contracts and creates lower pressure.

공기가 차가워지면 수축해서 더 낮은 압력을 만듭니다.

 

When the flame burnt out, the air inside the glass cooled down.

불꽃이 다 타 버렸을 때 유리컵 속의 공기는 식어 버렸습니다.

 

As the air cooled down, the air pressure dropped.

공기가 식었을 때 기압이 낮아졌습니다.

 

So the air outside the glass was at a higher pressure.

그래서 유리컵 밖의 공기 압력이 더 높아졌습니다.

 

It pushed the water into the glass.

높아진 압력의 공기가 물을 유리컵 속으로 밀어 넣었습니다.

 

The Secret of the Disappearing Water

사라지는 물의 비밀

 

Ken: Now, I'm going to fill one of these cups with water.

Ken: 이제, 이 컵들 중 하나를 물로 채워 보겠습니다.

 

I will move them around to confuse you.

여러분을 헷갈리게 하려고 이 컵들을 섞어 보겠습니다.

 

Jina, which cup has the water in it?

지나, 어떤 컵에 물이 있을까요?

 

Jina: That's easy! It's the middle one.

지나: 쉽네요! 가운데 컵이에요.

 

Ken: Okay, let's check. See? No water.

Ken: 좋습니다, 확인해 봅시다. 보이죠? 물이 없네요.

 

Jina: Show me the other cups.

지나: 다른 컵들도 보여 주세요.

 

Ken: See? There's no water.

Ken: 보이죠? 물이 없어요.

 

Jina: Wow! How come the water disappeared?

지나: 와! 어째서 물이 사라진 거죠?

 

Ken: Before the trick, I put a special material into one of the cups.

Ken: 마술 전에, 저는 특별한 물질을 컵들 중 하나에 넣어 두었습니다.

 

The material absorbed the water and turned it into jelly.

그 물질은 물을 흡수하고 그것을 젤리로 변하게 했습니다.

 

Then the jelly stuck to the bottom.

그러고 나서 젤리는 컵 바닥에 달라붙었습니다.

 

If you want to try this trick, it's necessary to use cups that you can't see through.

여러분이 이 마술을 해 보고자 한다면, 속을 들여다볼 수 없는 컵을 사용하는 것이 필요합니다.
