Playing Soccer on the Water

물 위에서 축구하기

Koh Panyee was a small floating village in the middle of the sea.

Koh Panyee는 바다 가운데 떠 있는 작은 수상 마을이었다.

 

Although the boys in the village never played soccer before, they loved watching it on TV.

비록 마을의 소년들이 이전에 축구를 해 본 적이 없었지만, 그들은 TV로 축구 경기 보는 것을 정말 좋아했다.

 

One day, the boys decided to make their own soccer team.

어느 날, 소년들은 그들만의 축구팀을 만들기로 결정했다.

 

However, people laughed at their idea.

그러나 사람들은 그들의 생각을 비웃었다.

 

“That's impossible.”

“그것은 불가능해.”

 

“What makes you say so?”

“왜 그렇게 말하는 거죠?”

 

“Look around. Where are you going to play soccer?”

“주위를 둘러봐. 너희가 어디서 축구를 할 거니?”

 

The villagers were right.

마을 사람들이 옳았다.

 

The boys had no place to play soccer.

소년들은 축구를 할 장소가 없었다.

 

They were discouraged.

그들은 낙담했다.

 

“Don't give up! We can still play soccer.”

“포기하지 마! 우리는 여전히 축구를 할 수 있어.”

 

“How?”

“어떻게?”

 

“Let's make our own soccer field.”

“우리만의 축구장을 만들자.”

 

The boys gathered old boats and pieces of wood.

소년들은 낡은 배들과 나무 조각들을 모았다.

 

They put the boats together and nailed the wood to them.

그들은 배들을 합치고 그것들에 나무를 못으로 박았다.

 

After much hard work, they finally had a floating field.

It was shaky and had nails everywhere.

The ball and the boys would often fall into the sea, so the field was always wet and slippery.

Still, they didn't care.

One day, a boy brought a poster about a soccer tournament.

어느 날 한 소년이 축구 토너먼트에 관한 포스터를 가지고 왔다.

 

They decided to give it a try.

그들은 한번 해 보기로 결정했다.

 

When they were about to leave, the villagers gave them new shoes and uniforms.

그들이 떠나려고 할 때 마을 사람들이 그들에게 새 신발과 축구복을 주었다.

 

Some even came to watch the game.

심지어 몇몇은 경기를 보러 왔다.

 

This made the boys feel better.

이것은 소년들의 기분을 더 좋게 만들었다.

 

At first, people saw them as the weakest team.

처음에 사람들은 그들을 가장 약한 팀으로 보았다.

 

However, when the tournament started, the soccer team surprised everyone.

그러나 토너먼트가 시작되었을 때 그 축구팀은 모두를 놀라게 했다.

 

On the day of the semi-final, it was raining hard.

준결승전 날, 비가 심하게 내리고 있었다.

 

They were losing by two goals and it looked impossible to win.

그들은 두 골 차로 지고 있었고 이기는 것은 불가능해 보였다.

 

“The other team is so strong,” they thought.

“다른 팀이 너무 강해.”라고 그들은 생각했다.

 

But the boys didn't give up.

그러나 소년들은 포기하지 않았다.

 

They took off their shoes during the second half and the game changed completely.

후반전에서 그들은 신발을 벗었고 경기는 완전히 바뀌었다.

 

They played better in the rain thanks to the slippery field at home.

고향의 미끄러운 축구장 덕분에 그들은 빗속에서 더 잘했다.

 

Although they lost by a score of three to two, still, they felt proud of themselves.

비록 그들은 3대 2의 점수로 졌지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 스스로를 자랑스럽게 여겼다.

 

They didn't give up when they were losing.

그들은 지고 있을 때 포기하지 않았다.

 

They tried their best until the end.

그들은 끝까지 최선을 다했다.
