How do you express your feelings?

여러분은 자신의 느낌을 어떻게 표현하는가?

 

Do you sing or dance?

노래를 부르거나 춤을 추는가?

 

Do you write a poem or draw a picture?

시를 쓰거나 그림을 그리는가?

 

Nowadays, it is popular to express feelings through handwriting.

요즈음에는 손 글씨를 통해 감정을 표현하는 것이 인기 있다.

 

Let's look at some works of art.

몇몇 작품을 보자.

 

In the work of art on the right, the word includes an image of a delicious fruit, hongsi.

오른쪽에 있는 작품에서는 단어가 맛있는 과일인 홍시의 이미지를 포함하고 있다.

 

It shows that autumn is a season of fruit.

그것은 가을이 결실의 계절임을 보여 준다.

 

The work of art on the left shows a Korean word and a Chinese character.

왼쪽에 있는 작품은 한글 단어와 한자를 보여 주고 있다.

 

It looks like a happy woman walking down a road with autumn leaves.

그것은 마치 단풍잎이 깔린 길을 걸어 내려오고 있는 행복한 여인처럼 보인다.

 

Both of these works express the feeling of autumn through beautiful handwriting.

이 두 작품은 아름다운 손 글씨를 통해 가을의 느낌을 표현한다.

 

This kind of art is called calligraphy.

이런 종류의 예술은 캘리그래피라고 불린다.

 

Calligraphy is not new.

캘리그래피는 새로운 것이 아니다.

 

Many different kinds of calligraphy works from long ago can be found all around the world.

오래전의 다양한 종류의 많은 캘리그래피 작품들을 세계 곳곳에서 찾아볼 수 있다.

The left one was created by Chusa in the period of the Joseon Dynasty.

왼쪽 작품은 조선 왕조 시대에 추사에 의해 창작되었다.

 

The characters were painted with a soft brush.

The right one, The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, was created in England in the early 1400s.

오른쪽 작품인 Chaucer의 '캔터베리 이야기'는 1400년대 초반에 영국에서 창작되었다.

 

It was written with a pen.

그것은 펜으로 쓰였다.

 

Different writing tools led to different styles of calligraphy.

각기 다른 필기구가 각기 다른 캘리그래피의 스타일을 이끌었다.

 

Of course, all calligraphers had to practice hard to make their unique styles.
