The 100th Customer

백 번째 손님

One day, an elderly woman walked into a restaurant.

어느 날 한 할머니가 식당 안으로 걸어 들어왔다.

 

She was with her grandson.

그녀는 손자와 함께였다.

 

Quietly, the woman asked Mr. Kang, the owner of the restaurant.

조용히 그 할머니는 식당의 주인인 강 씨에게 물어보았다.

 

“How much is a bowl of Gukbap?”

“국밥 한 그릇에 얼마지요?”

 

“It’s 4,000 won, ma’am.” Mr. Kang answered with a smile.

“4,000원입니다, 할머니.” 강 씨는 미소를 지으며 대답했다.

 

She was too poor to pay for two bowls.

그녀는 너무 가난해서 두 그릇 값을 지불할 수 없었다.

 

She ordered a single bowl for her grandson.

그녀는 손자를 위해 한 그릇을 주문했다.

 

“Are you sure you are not hungry, Grandma?” the boy asked, as he ate the hot soup.

“정말 배고프지 않으세요, 할머니?” 소년은 따뜻한 국물을 먹으며 물었다.

 

“No, I’m not hungry. Don’t worry about me.”

“아니, 난 배고프지 않아. 내 걱정은 말거라.”

 

She picked up some Gimchi and chewed on it happily.

그녀는 김치 약간을 집어올리고 그것을 기쁘게 먹었다.

 

Mr. Kang watched them eat, and a warm feeling came over him.

강 씨는 그들이 먹는 것을 지켜보았고, 따뜻한 감정이 그에게 밀려왔다.

 

He thought up a plan to give the boy a free meal.

그는 소년에게 공짜로 식사를 주기 위한 계획을 생각해냈다.

 

When the woman was about to pay, Mr. Kang waved his hands and said, “No need, ma’am.

할머니가 막 지불을 하려고 했을 때, 강 씨는 그의 손을 흔들며 말했다. “필요 없어요, 할머니.

 

In my restaurant, you don’t pay if you’re the 100th customer of the day.”

제 식당에서는 그 날의 백 번째 손님이면 돈을 지불하지 않습니다.”

 

The woman and her grandson thanked Mr. Kang and left.

할머니와 그녀의 손자는 강 씨에게 고마워하고 떠났다.

 

A month later, Mr. Kang saw the boy in the street outside the restaurant.

한 달 후에 강 씨는 식당 밖의 길에서 그 소년을 보았다.

 

The boy was gathering stones.

그 소년은 돌을 모으고 있었다.

 

“What are you doing?” asked Mr. Kang.

“뭐 하고 있니?” 강 씨가 물었다.

 

“I’m counting the number of customers who enter your restaurant.

“저는 아저씨의 식당에 들어가는 고객들의 수를 세고 있어요.

 

Today is my grandma’s birthday.”

오늘은 우리 할머니의 생신이거든요.”

 

‘He wants to be the 100th customer and treat his grandmother to a bowl of Gukbap!’ Mr. Kang said to himself.

‘이 아이가 100번째 손님이 되어서 할머니께 국밥 한 그릇을 대접하고 싶나 보구나!’ 강 씨는 혼잣말을 했다.

 

Mr. Kang looked down.

강 씨는 아래로 내려다 보았다.

 

He could see that the number of stones was not yet even fifty.

그는 돌의 개수가 아직 50개도 되지 않은 것을 볼 수 있었다.

 

He had to do something to help the boy gather 100 stones.

그는 소년이 100개의 돌을 모으는 것을 돕기 위해 무언가를 해야만 했다.

 

Mr. Kang went back into the restaurant and called his friends.

강 씨는 식당으로 돌아가서 그의 친구들에게 전화했다.

 

“Come to my restaurant now and bring everyone who works with you.

“지금 내 식당으로 오고, 자네와 함께 일하는 모든 사람들을 데려오게나.

 

There is a boy who needs your help.”

자네의 도움이 필요한 소년이 있다네.”

 

People began to arrive at the restaurant.

사람들이 식당에 도착하기 시작했다.

 

When the 99th customer arrived, Mr. Kang heard the boy say, “It’s our turn, Grandma.”

99번 째 손님이 도착했을 때, 강 씨는 소년이 “우리 차례에요, 할머니.”라고 말하는 것을 들었다.

 

Mr. Kang welcomed them and served the woman a free bowl of Gukbap.

강 씨는 그들을 맞이했고, 할머니에게 무료 국밥을 한 그릇 드렸다.

 

“Are you sure you are not hungry?” the woman asked the boy.

“너 정말 배가 안 고픈거 맞니?” 할머니가 소년에게 물었다.

 

The boy chewed loudly on some Gimchi and said with a smile, “No, I’m not hungry, Grandma. Don’t worry about me. Happy birthday!”

소년은 큰 소리로 김치를 씹고 미소를 띄며 말하길, “아니요, 저는 배가 안 고파요, 할머니. 제 걱정은 마세요. 생신 축하드려요!”
