From Trash to Music

쓰레기를 음악으로

Tears of joy are rolling down my cheeks. I’m so happy and thrilled.

기쁨의 눈물이 내 볼에 흘러내리고 있다. 나는 정말 기쁘고 황홀하다. 

 

If I were a bird, I would fly. I look around.

내가 새라면, 날아오를 텐데. 나는 주위를 둘러본다. 

 

The other members in my orchestra are hugging one another.

우리 오케스트라의 다른 단원들이 서로 껴안고 있다. 

 

Our concert has just finished and everyone is standing and giving us a big hand.

우리의 연주회가 이제 막 끝났고 모든 사람들이 일어서서 우리에게 큰 박수를 보내고 있다. 

 

None of us ever expected that this day would come. It has been a long journey.

우리 중 아무도 이런 날이 올 거라고 예상하지 못했다. 그것은 긴 여정이었다.

 

My name is Andrea and I’m a violinist in the Recycled Orchestra.

내 이름은 Andrea이고 나는 Recycled Orchestra(재활용 오케스트라)의 바이올린 연주자이다. 

 

Why is it called the Recycled Orchestra?

오케스트라가 왜 재활용 오케스트라로 불리냐고? 

 

It’s because our musical instruments are made of objects from a landfill.

그것은 우리의 악기들이 쓰레기 매립지에서 나온 물건들로 만들어져 있기 때문이다. 

 

That’s why it’s also known as the Landfill Harmonic Orchestra.

그것이 오케스트라가 Landfill Harmonic Orchestra로도 알려진 이유이다. 

 

Most of us in the orchestra are from Cateura, a small town in Paraguay.

오케스트라의 우리들 대부분은 파라과이의 작은 마을인 카테우라 출신이다. 

 

There is a huge landfill in our town.

우리 마을에는 거대한 쓰레기 매립지가 있다. 

 

Some people even say that Cateura itself is a giant landfill.

몇몇 사람들은 심지어 카테우라 자체가 거대한 쓰레기 매립지라고 말한다. 

 

Many of us are poor. There weren’t many hopes and dreams in our town.

우리들 중 많은 이들이 가난하다. 우리 마을에는 꿈과 희망이 많지 않았다. 

 

Everything began to change, however, when we met Favio Chávez.

그러나 우리가 Favio Chávez 선생님을 만났을 때 모든 것이 바뀌기 시작했다.

 

Favio was an environmental educator and a musician.

Favio 선생님은 환경 교육가이자 음악가였다. 

 

He wanted to teach us music, but there was a big problem.

그는 우리에게 음악을 가르치고 싶어 했지만, 큰 문제가 있었다. 

 

There were only a few musical instruments in the whole town. We couldn’t afford to buy new ones.

온 마을에 악기가 단지 몇 개뿐이었다. 우리는 새 악기를 살 형편이 안 되었다. 

 

But Favio didn’t give up.

그러나 Favio 선생님은 포기하지 않았다. 

 

He said that we could make musical instruments with objects from the landfill.

그는 우리가 쓰레기 매립지에서 나온 물건들로 악기를 만들 수 있다고 말했다. 

 

A talented man named Nicholas was able to put this idea into practice.

재주가 뛰어난 Nicholas 라는 이름의 남자가 이 생각을 실행에 옮길 수 있었다. 

 

He made violins from oil drums. He turned water pipes into flutes.

그는 기름통으로 바이올린을 만들었다. 그는 수도관을 플루트로 바꾸었다.

 

We had another problem. No one knew how to play musical instruments.

우리에게는 또 다른 문제가 있었다. 아무도 악기를 연주하는 법을 몰랐다. 

 

We didn’t even know how to read music.

우리는 심지어 악보를 읽는 법도 알지 못했다. 

 

Favio taught us with great patience.

Favio 선생님은 엄청난 인내심을 가지고 우리를 가르쳤다. 

 

Step by step, we began to make some sounds on our instruments.

점차로, 우리는 악기로 어떤 소리를 만들어 내기 시작했다. 

 

I still remember the first piece of music that we played.

나는 아직도 우리가 연주했던 첫 곡을 기억한다. 

 

It was very short and mostly out of tune.

그 곡은 매우 짧고 대부분은 음이 맞지 않았다. 

 

But it was the most beautiful music to us.

하지만 그것은 우리에게는 가장 아름다운 곡이었다. 

 

We felt a new hope in our hearts.

우리는 마음속에 새로운 희망을 느꼈다. 

 

From then on, we gathered to practice every day.

그때부터, 우리는 매일 연습을 하기 위해 모였다. 

 

One day, Favio told us some great news.

어느 날, Favio 선생님은 우리에게 엄청난 소식을 말해 줬다. 

 

We were going to have a concert, a real concert!

우리는 공연을, 진짜 공연을 하게 될 것이었다! 

 

And here we are now in front of hundreds of people. They love our music.

그리고 우리는 지금 여기 수백 명의 사람들 앞에 있다. 그들은 우리의 음악을 사랑한다. 

 

The world sends us trash, but we send back music!

세상은 우리에게 쓰레기를 보내지만, 우리는 음악을 돌려보낸다!
