Paint a Better Tomorrow

더 나은 내일을 그려라

Hi. My name is Homin. This is me in front of the wall painting.

안녕. 내 이름은 호민이야. 벽화 앞에 있는 사람이 나야.

 

The wings are pretty, aren’t they?

날개가 예뻐, 그렇지 않니?

 

Many people like to take pictures in front of wall paintings.

많은 사람들이 벽화 앞에서 사진 찍는 것을 좋아해.

 

They make old neighborhoods bright and new.

벽화는 오래된 동네를 밝고 새롭게 만들어.

 

Last month, I visited a village with wall paintings in Yeosu.

지난달에 나는 여수에 있는 벽화 마을을 방문했어.

 

As I was taking a picture, a light went on in my head.

내가 사진을 찍을 때 머릿속에 좋은 생각이 떠올랐어.

 

I thought, “I’m in the school art club. Why don’t we do wall paintings like these?”

‘나는 학교 미술 동아리에 있잖아. 우리가 이것처럼 벽화를 그리면 어떨까?’라고 나는 생각했어.

 

I suggested this idea at the next club meeting, and the members loved it.

나는 이 아이디어를 그 다음 동아리 모임에서 제안했고, 동아리 부원들은 그것을 아주 좋아했어.

 

We found a teen volunteer project on the Internet.

우리는 인터넷에서 청소년 자원봉사 프로젝트를 찾았어.

 

The project was to do a wall painting in our neighborhood.

그 프로젝트는 우리 동네에 벽화를 그리는 것이었어.

 

We applied for it, and two weeks later, our club was selected!

우리는 그 일에 지원했고, 2주 후에 우리 동아리가 선택되었어!

 

The day of the project finally came.

The project manager had us meet at the painting site at 9 a.m.

The wall was in very poor condition.

벽은 상태가 별로 좋지 않았어.

 

There were strange writings and drawings on some parts.

몇 군데에는 이상한 낙서와 그림이 있었어.

 

Other parts had old posters on them.

다른 부분에는 오래된 포스터들이 붙어 있었어.

 

We removed the posters first and painted over the writings and drawings with white paint.

우리는 먼저 포스터들을 제거하고 낙서와 그림을 흰색 페인트로 덧칠했어.

 

The manager let us paint anything we wanted.

책임자는 우리가 원하는 어떤 것이든 그리게 했어.

 

We decided to paint something cute because the wall was near an elementary school.

우리는 그 벽이 초등학교 근처에 있어서 귀여운 뭔가를 그리기로 했어.

 

We divided into three groups and began painting.

우리는 세 그룹으로 나뉘어 그리기 시작했어.

 

I was in the group with Minsu and Jiwon.

나는 민수, 지원이와 같은 그룹이었어.

 

I chose my spot and started to paint my favorite movie character.

나는 내 구역을 정해서 내가 가장 좋아하는 영화 캐릭터를 그리기 시작했어.

 

Minsu painted some flowers and Jiwon did some background drawings.

민수는 꽃 몇 송이를 그렸고 지원이는 배경 그림을 그렸어.

 

Our club painted for about five hours.

우리 동아리는 약 다섯 시간 동안 그림을 그렸어.

 

After we finished, we got together and shared the day’s experiences.

다 끝난 후에 우리는 모여서 그날의 경험을 함께 이야기했어.

 

Minsu was very proud of his flower painting.

민수는 자신이 그린 꽃 그림을 정말 자랑스러워했어.

 

He said, “My flower is so real that a bee landed on it.”

그는 “내 꽃이 정말 진짜 같아서 벌이 꽃에 앉았어.”라고 말했어.

 

I said, “Drawing on a wall was much harder than drawing on paper.”

나는 “벽에 그리는 것이 종이에 그리는 것보다 훨씬 더 힘들었어.”라고 말했어.

 

We all agreed that our wall painting wasn’t perfect.

우리 모두는 우리 벽화가 완벽하지는 않다는 것에 동의했어.

 

But it didn’t matter.

We made our neighborhood a little brighter and happier.

We were proud of ourselves.

We didn’t just paint pictures on a wall that day.

It was a better tomorrow that we painted.
