자연이 도시를 만나다

Have you heard of the expression, “Art imitates nature”?

‘예술이 자연을 모방한다'라는 표현을 들어 본 적이 있는가? 

 

Many artists get their ideas and inspirations from the world around them.

많은 예술가들이 아이디어와 영감을 그들 주변의 세상에서 얻는다. 

 

This is because the natural world is a beautiful place.

이는 자연계가 아름다운 곳이기 때문이다. 

 

The shapes in nature are very pleasing to the eye.

자연의 형태는 보기에 매우 좋다. 

 

For example, look at the egg on the left. Isn’t it beautiful?

예를 들면 왼쪽의 달걀을 봐라. 아름답지 않은가? 

 

It is round and delicate, yet strong enough to protect its contents.

그것은 둥글고 부서지기 쉽지만 내용물을 보호할 만큼 충분히 튼튼하다. 

 

Can you imagine a building that looks like an egg?

달걀처럼 생긴 건물을 상상할 수 있는가? 

 

Such a building actually exists in London.

이러한 형태의 건물이 런던에는 실제로 존재한다.

 

Nature has inspired many architects around the world.

자연은 세계의 많은 건축가들에게 영감을 주어 왔다. 

 

This is the Sagrada Familia in Spain.

이것은 스페인에 있는 사그라다 파밀리아 성당이다. 

 

It is one of the most famous churches in the world.

그것은 세계에서 가장 유명한 성당 중의 하나이다. 

 

Look at the beautiful tall columns inside the church.

성당 안에 있는 아름다운 높은 기둥을 봐라. 

 

They look like trees, don’t they?

기둥이 나무처럼 보인다, 그렇지 않은가? 

 

The famous architect, Antoni Gaudi, used the shape of trees in the Sagrada Familia.

유명한 건축가인 Antoni Gaudi는 사그라다 파밀리아 성당에 나무의 형태를 사용했다. 

 

That’s how he brought the beauty of nature indoors.

그렇게 해서 그는 자연의 아름다움을 실내로 가져왔다.

 

In the first two examples, we can easily see what inspired the architect.

앞의 두 예시에서 우리는 무엇이 건축가에게 영감을 주었는지 쉽게 알 수 있다. 

 

But in the next example from Australia, this is not so obvious.

하지만 호주의 다음 예시에서는 이것이 그다지 명확하지 않다. 

 

Jørn Utzon, the architect of the Sydney Opera House, took a shape from nature and added his imagination.

시드니 오페라 하우스의 건축가인 Jørn Utzon은 자연에서 형태를 가져와 자신의 상상력을 더했다. 

 

Can you guess what inspired him?

무엇이 그에게 영감을 주었는지 추측할 수 있는가? 

 

Many people think that it is the waves in the ocean or a sailing boat.

많은 사람들은 그것이 바다의 파도나 돛단배라고 생각한다. 

 

But interestingly, the inspiration came from an orange.

하지만 흥미롭게도, 그 영감은 오렌지에서 비롯되었다. 

 

Look at the roof closely. Can you see the peels of an orange?

지붕을 자세히 봐라. 오렌지의 껍질 형태가 보이는가? 

 

When orange lights are shone on the building, you can see the peels more clearly.

오렌지색 조명이 건물을 비추면, 껍질 형태를 더 명확하게 볼 수 있다.

 

What about Korea? Have you ever been to Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul?

한국은 어떤가? 서울의 동대문 디자인 플라자에 가 본 적이 있는가? 

 

Many people think that the building looks like a giant spaceship.

많은 사람들은 이 건물이 거대한 우주선처럼 보인다고 생각한다. 

 

But the architect, Zaha Hadid, took the curved lines from nature so that city people could enjoy them.

하지만 건축가인 Zaha Hadid는 도시 사람들이 즐길 수 있도록 자연에서 곡선을 가져왔다. 

 

Thanks to its special design, it has become a popular tourist attraction in Seoul.

이 특별한 디자인 덕분에, 동대문 디자인 플라자는 서울의 인기 있는 관광 명소가 되었다. 

 

As you can see, many buildings try to capture the beauty of nature in their design.

보는 바와 같이, 많은 건물들이 디자인에 자연의 아름다움을 담아내려고 한다. 

 

They are perfect examples of “Nature meets city.”

이 건물들은 '자연이 도시를 만나다'의 완벽한 예이다.
