Under the Sea

바다 아래에

Two-thirds of our planet is covered by oceans.

우리 행성의 3분의 2는 대양들로 덮여 있다.

 

They are full of wonder and are home to millions of species.

대양들은 신기한 것으로 가득 차 있으며 수많은 종의 서식지이다.

 

Every day, we are learning new things about them.

매일 우리는 그 종들에 관한 새로운 것들을 배우고 있다.

 

Let’s find out about some interesting sea animals.

몇몇 흥미로운 바다 동물들을 알아보자.

 

Sweet Dreams

좋은 꿈 꿔라

Can you guess what these whales are doing in the picture?

여러분은 그림 속 이 고래들이 무엇을 하고 있는지 추측할 수 있는가?

 

It looks like they are standing up in a group.

그것들은 무리를 지어 서 있는 것처럼 보인다.

 

But they are actually sleeping!

그러나 그것들은 실제로는 잠을 자고 있다!

 

Humpback whales stand on their tails while they sleep.

혹등고래는 잠을 자는 동안 꼬리로 서 있는다.

 

They sleep near the surface.

그것들은 수면 근처에서 잠을 잔다.

 

Since they are not fish, they need to come up to breathe.

그들은 물고기가 아니기 때문에 숨을 쉬기 위해 위로 나올 필요가 있다.

 

Also, they don’t fall asleep completely.

또한 그것들은 완전히 잠들지 않는다.

 

When they wake up, they come out of the water for a deep breath and dive back into the sea.

그것들은 잠에서 깨면 심호흡을 하러 물 밖으로 나왔다가 바다로 다시 뛰어든다.

If you think fish are not smart, take a look at the tuskfish.

만약 물고기가 똑똑하지 않다고 생각한다면 tuskfish를 한번 봐라.

 

This small fish whose favorite food is clams uses a tool to open them.

가장 좋아하는 먹이가 조개인 이 작은 물고기는 조개를 열기 위해 도구를 사용한다.

 

Clams usually hide under the sand, so they cannot be easily discovered.

조개는 대개 모래 아래에 숨어 있어서 쉽게 발견될 수 없다.

 

The tuskfish blows on the sand until a clam appears.

tuskfish는 조개가 나타날 때까지 모래에 입김을 분다.

 

The clam is closed tightly, so the fish cannot eat it.

조개가 단단히 닫혀 있어서 물고기는 그것을 먹을 수 없다.

 

But the tuskfish doesn’t give up.

그러나 tuskfish는 포기하지 않는다.

 

It smashes the clam against a rock.

tuskfish는 조개를 바위에 내리친다.

 

In the end, the clam opens and dinner is served.

마침내 조개가 열리고 밥상이 차려진다.

 

One, Two, Three, Jump!

하나, 둘, 셋, 뛰어라!

You have probably seen a bird fly down to the sea to catch a fish.

여러분은 아마 새가 물고기를 잡기 위해 바다로 날아 내려가는 것을 본 적이 있을 것이다.

 

But have you ever seen a fish jump out of the water to catch a bird?

그러나 물고기가 새를 잡기 위해 물 밖으로 뛰어오르는 것을 본 적이 있는가?

 

Well, birds have to be careful when a giant trevally is around.

자, giant trevally가 주변에 있을 때 새들은 조심해야 한다.

 

This fish can grow up to 170cm and 80kg.

이 물고기는 170센티미터에 80킬로그램까지 자랄 수 있다.

 

But don’t let its size fool you.

그러나 그 크기에 속지 마라.

 

This fish is quick and smart.

이 물고기는 빠르고 똑똑하다.

 

It can spot a flying bird and calculate its speed and distance.

이것은 날고 있는 새를 발견하고 그 새의 속도와 거리를 계산할 수 있다.

 

When the bird flies nearby, the giant trevally jumps out of the water and catches it.

새가 근처에 날고 있을 때, giant trevally는 물 밖으로 뛰어올라 새를 잡는다.
