A Christmas Miracle

크리스마스의 기적

It was Christmas Eve in 1914, the first year of World War I.

제일 차 세계 대전의 첫해였던 1914년의 크리스마스이브였습니다.

 

English soldiers were facing German soldiers from their trenches as they had done for the last few months.

영국 군인들은 지난 몇 달 동안 그래왔듯이 그들의 참호에서 독일 군인들과 대치하고 있었어요.

 

The trenches were cold and wet.

참호는 춥고 축축했습니다.

 

The soldiers were tired and missed their home, all the more so because it was Christmas.

군인들은 지쳤고 자신들의 집을 그리워했는데, 크리스마스라는 이유로 더욱더 그랬습니다.

 

Suddenly, a familiar song was heard coming from the German trenches.

갑자기 익숙한 노래가 독일 군인들의 참호로부터 들려왔습니다.

 

It was a Christmas carol! What’s going on?

그것은 크리스마스 캐럴이었어요! 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는 걸까요?

 

It might be a trick to make them come out of the trenches.

어쩌면 그들을 참호 밖으로 유인하고자 하는 속임수일지도 모릅니다.

 

A few English soldiers boldly looked out of their trenches.

몇몇 영국 군인들이 용감하게 자신들의 참호 밖을 내다보았어요.

 

One by one, other soldiers followed their example.

차례차례 다른 군인들도 앞사람을 따랐습니다.

 

What they saw was a sight they never expected.

영국 군인들이 본 것은 그들이 절대 예상하지 못한 광경이었어요.

 

Along the German trenches, Christmas trees were standing lit with lanterns!

독일 군인들의 참호를 따라, 크리스마스트리들이 랜턴으로 밝혀진 채 있었습니다!

 

The German soldiers sang one Christmas song after another.

독일 군인들은 크리스마스 캐럴을 연이어 불렀어요.

 

The English soldiers began to answer by also singing Christmas songs.

영국 군인들도 크리스마스 캐럴을 부르며 화답하기 시작했습니다.

 

The warm lights and the Christmas carols made them forget they were on the front line.

따뜻한 불빛과 크리스마스 캐럴은 그들이 최전선에 있다는 것을 잊게 만들었어요.

 

Then a shout came out from the German side: “Happy Christmas! You no shoot, we no shoot!”

그리고 독일 군인들 쪽에서 고함이 터져 나왔습니다. “행복한 크리스마스예요! 당신들이 쏘지 않는다면, 우리도 쏘지 않을게요!”

 

Soon, soldiers whose aim had been to kill each other just a few hours before began to exchange greetings.

곧, 단지 몇 시간 전까지만 해도 서로를 죽이는 것이 목적이었던 군인들은 인사를 나누기 시작했습니다.

 

For the first time in several months, the soldiers were able to spend a night in peace.

It truly was a silent night.

Christmas morning came.

크리스마스 아침이 밝았습니다.

 

Soldiers on both sides put down their weapons and came out of their trenches.

They met in the no-man's-land between their trenches and shook hands.

그들은 자신들의 참호 사이에 있는 무인 지대에서 만났고 악수를 했습니다.

 

They exchanged small gifts such as wine and cake.

They sang carols together.

그들은 캐럴을 함께 불렀습니다.

 

Some even exchanged addresses and played football.

This unbelievable Christmas Day was written about in letters English soldiers sent home.

One soldier wrote, “On Christmas Day, English and German soldiers met between the two lines and had talks. We also had bike races.”

Another wrote, “We didn’t think that we were at war.

Here we were, enemy talking to enemy.

They were like us, with mothers, with friends, with wives who were waiting to welcome their men home again.”
