Drawing the Mind

마음 그리기

Everything you do says something about you.

당신이 하는 모든 행동은 당신에 대해 말해 줍니다. 

 

The language you use, the clothes you wear, and even the pets you raise somehow show what kind of person you are.

당신이 사용하는 언어, 당신이 입는 옷, 그리고 당신이 기르는 애완동물까지도 당신이 어떤 종류의 사람인지 보여 줍니다. 

 

The things you draw are not much different.

당신이 그리는 그림도 마찬가지입니다. 

 

What you draw and how you draw it are related to your personality.

당신이 그리는 것과 그것을 그려내는 방식은 당신의 성격과 관련이 있습니다. 

 

Doctors have been using various drawing tests to better understand people.

의사들은 사람들을 더 잘 이해하기 위해 다양한 그림 그리기 검사를 사용해 오고 있습니다.

 

One of those tests is the Draw-a-Person-in-the-Rain (DAPR) test.

이런 검사들 중 하나는 빗속의 사람 그리기 검사입니다. 

 

Study the pictures below.

아래의 그림들을 연구해 봅시다. 

 

The person in Drawing A is holding an umbrella in a light rain.

A 그림 속의 사람은 가벼운 빗속에서 우산을 들고 있습니다. 

 

On the other hand, the person in Drawing B is in a heavy rain and has no umbrella.

반면에, B 그림 속의 사람은 거센 빗속에서 우산을 가지고 있지 않습니다. 

 

Also, there are dark clouds above the person in Drawing B.

또한, 검은 구름들이 B 그림의 사람 머리 위에 있습니다. 

 

What can these differences mean?

이런 차이는 무엇을 의미하는 걸까요?

 

First, the rain shows the stress the person who drew the picture is under.

첫 번째, 비는 그림을 그린 사람이 받고 있는 스트레스를 보여 줍니다.

 

The bigger the drops are or the more heavily the rain is falling, the bigger the stress is.

빗방울의 크기가 크면 클수록, 혹은 비가 더 세게 내리면 내릴수록 스트레스는 더 큽니다. 

 

The clouds mean problems waiting to happen, so a big cloud shows the drawer is not very hopeful about the future.

구름은 앞으로 벌어질 문제를 의미하기 때문에, 큰 구름은 그림을 그린 사람이 미래에 대해 그다지 희망적이지 않다는 것을 나타냅니다. 

 

Second, the umbrella means the protection the person has in a stressful situation.

두 번째, 우산은 스트레스를 받는 상황에서 그 사람이 가지고 있는 보호 기제를 의미합니다. 

 

A big umbrella shows that the drawer has a lot of plans or protection.

큰 우산은 그림을 그린 사람이 많은 계획이나 보호 기제를 가지고 있음을 보여 줍니다. 

 

If there’s no umbrella in the drawing, the drawer does not have any means to deal with difficult situations. 

만약 그림에 우산이 없다면, 그 그림을 그린 사람은 어려운 상황을 헤쳐 나갈 어떤 방법도 가지고 있지 않습니다.

 

Third, the details in the drawing of the person have to do with the drawer’s attitude under stress.

세 번째, 그림 속 사람의 세부적인 것들은 그 그림을 그린 사람이 스트레스를 받을 때의 태도와 관련이 있습니다. 

 

For example, someone who draws a person without a face does not want to draw people’s attention to himself or herself.

예를 들어, 얼굴이 없는 사람을 그린 사람은 사람들의 관심을 끌기를 원하지 않습니다. 

 

Someone who draws the person on the right side of the paper is ready to meet the future.

사람을 종이의 오른쪽에 그린 사람은 미래를 맞이할 준비가 되어 있습니다. 

 

On the other hand, someone who draws the person on the left side may be worried about things that have happened in the past.

반면에, 사람을 왼쪽에 그린 사람은 과거에 일어났던 일에 대해 걱정하고 있을 수도 있습니다. 

 

These are some of the possible meanings of each part of the drawings.

이것들은 그림 각 부분의 가능한 의미 풀이 중 일부입니다. 

 

Now, go back and look at the two drawings.

이제, 돌아가서 두 그림을 보세요.
