In many ways, 42-year-old Joseph Palmer was an ordinary person.

여러 면에서 42살의 Joseph Palmer는 평범한 사람이었다. 

 

He had a job and cared for his family.

그는 직업이 있었고 가족을 돌보았다. 

 

But in 1830, after he moved to a small town in Massachusetts, he began to face difficulties.

하지만 1830년에 매사추세츠에 있는 작은 도시로 이사를 한 후에 그는 어려움에 직면하기 시작했다. 

 

Joseph looked different from other people: he had a long beard.

Joseph은 다른 사람들과 달라 보였다. 그는 기다란 턱수염을 기르고 있었다. 

 

People did not like it very much.

사람들은 그것을 무척 좋아하지 않았다. 

 

The town's people avoided the man with a beard.

마을 사람들은 턱수염을 가진 그 남자를 피했다. 

 

They did not want to sit next to him.

Some neighbors broke his windows. Others threw stones at him when he walked down the street.

They told him to stop growing a beard. Joseph did not mind.

One day, four men attacked Joseph and threw him on the ground.

"We're going to cut off your beard!" they shouted.

Joseph was a big man, and he was able to fight them off.

But the men called the police and accused him of attacking them.

Poor Joseph was arrested.

He said to the judge, "I'm the victim here."

Sadly, no one believed a man with a beard, and he went to prison for over a year.

슬프게도, 아무도 턱수염을 가진 남자를 믿지 않았고, 그는 일 년이 넘는 기간 동안 감옥에 갔다.

 

Joseph's son, Thomas, wanted people to know the truth.

Joseph의 아들인 Thomas는 사람들이 진실을 알기를 원했다. 

 

He sent letters to newspapers across the country.

그는 전국에 있는 신문사에 편지를 보냈다. 

 

People learned that Joseph was in prison just for protecting himself and his beard.

Many people became angry about this, so the judge finally decided to set Joseph free.

His name was Abraham Lincoln.

그의 이름은 Abraham Lincoln(에이브러햄 링컨)이었다. 

 

He made beards popular, but Joseph Palmer fought for the right to have them.

턱수염을 대중적으로 만든 것은 그였지만, Joseph Palmer는 그것을 기를 권리를 위하여 싸웠다.
