The Three Most Important Things in Life

인생에서 가장 중요한 것 세 가지

Characters: King, Hermit, Bearded Man, Doctor, Bodyguard

인물: 왕, 은자, 수염 난 사람, 의사, 경호원 

 

A certain king wanted to know the answers to three key questions:

한 왕이 세 가지 주요 질문에 대한 답을 알고 싶었다: 

 

First, what is the most important thing to accomplish in life?

첫째, 인생에서 이뤄야 할 가장 중요한 것은 무엇인가? 

 

Second, when should he accomplish the most important thing?

둘째, 언제 가장 중요한 것을 이루어야 하는가? 

 

And third, who are the right people to help him accomplish that task?

그리고 세 번째, 그 임무를 이루도록 그를 도와줄 적당한 사람들은 누구인가? 

 

He thought that if he knew the answers to these questions, he would never fail in anything.

그는 만약 그가 이 질문들에 대한 답을 안다면 어떤 것에도 실패하지 않을 것이라고 생각했다. 

 

So he declared throughout his kingdom that he would give a large reward to anyone who could answer the three questions.

그래서 그는 그의 왕국 전체에서 세 가지 질문에 답할 수 있는 그 누군가에게 큰 보상을 하겠다고 선언했다. 

 

However, no one in the country was able to give him satisfying answers.

그러나 그 나라의 누구도 그에게 만족할 만한 답을 줄 수 없었다. 

 

The king then decided to consult a wise hermit.

그러자 왕은 현명한 은자에게 상담하기로 결정했다. 

 

The hermit only received common people, so the king visited him wearing simple clothes.

은자는 평범한 사람들만 받았기에, 그래서 왕은 평범한 옷을 입고 그를 방문했다.

 

Act 1, Scene 1

1막 1장 

The king meets the hermit, who is digging the ground in front of his hut.

왕은 자신의 오두막 앞에서 땅을 파고 있는 은자를 만난다. 

 

Glancing at the king, the hermit greets him and goes on digging.

은자는 왕을 한 번 보고서 인사를 하고 계속 땅을 판다. 

 

King: (Approaching) I have come to you, wise hermit, to ask you to answer three questions: What is the most important thing that deserves my attention?

왕: (다가서며) 세 가지 질문을 하려고 당신에게 왔습니다. 현명한 은자님. 제가 주목할 만한 가치가 있는 가장 중요한 것은 무엇입니까? 

 

When is the right time to do that important thing?

그 중요한 일을 할 적당한 시간은 언제입니까? 

 

And who are the people I need most to help me accomplish it

그리고 그것을 완수하는 저를 돕기 위해 저에게 가장 필요한 사람들은 누구입니까? 

 

?(Without saying a word, the hermit continues digging as if he had heard nothing.)

(한 마디도 하지 않고 은자는 아무것도 못들은 것처럼 땅을 계속 판다.) 

 

King: You look tired. (Reaching for the hermit)

왕: 피곤해 보이시는군요. (은자에게 다가가며) 

 

Let me take the spade and work awhile for you.

제가 삽을 들고 당신을 위해 일을 해드리죠. 

 

Hermit: Thanks! (Giving the spade to the king, he sits down on the ground.)

은자: 감사합니다! (삽을 왕에게 주고 그는 땅에 앉는다.) 

 

Act 1, Scene 2

1막 2장 

Hermit: (Watching the king digging the ground) To be honest, I know who you are.

은자: (왕이 땅을 파는 것을 보며) 솔직히 말해서 나는 당신이 누군지 알고 있습니다. 

 

I think you possess everything you want. Are you still not satisfied?

제 생각에 당신은 원하는 모든 것을 소유하고 있습니다. 아직도 만족하지 못하십니까? 

 

King: Of course not!

왕: 물론 아닙니다! 

 

Hermit: (Losing himself in thought for a while and rising from his seat) Now rest awhile and let me work a bit. I have to get this job done.

은자: (잠시 생각에 빠져있다가 자리에서 일어나며) 이제 잠깐 쉬시죠. 제가 일을 좀 하겠습니다. 이 일을 끝내야 해서요. 

 

(Not giving him the spade, the king continues to dig. The sun begins to set behind the trees.)

(그에게 삽을 주지 않고 왕은 계속 땅을 판다. 태양은 나무 뒤로 지기 시작한다.) 

 

King: I came to you, wise man, for answers to my questions.

왕: 제 질문에 대한 대답을 찾아 당신에게 왔습니다, 은자님. 

 

If you can give me none, tell me so, and I will return home.

아무것도 주실 게 없다면, 그렇다고 말씀해 주세요. 그럼 집에 돌아가겠습니다.

 

Act 2, Scene 1

2막 1장 

A sound is heard in the woods. A bearded man appears.

숲에서 어떤 소리가 들린다. 수염 난 남자가 나타난다. 

 

Hermit: Here comes someone walking. Let us see who it is.

은자: 여기 누군가 걸어오고 있습니다. 누군지 알아봅시다. 

 

Bearded man: (Walking unsteadily, in an urgent voice) Help me, please.

수염 난 남자: (불안정하게 걸어오면서, 다급한 목소리로) 도와주세요.

 

Have mercy on me. (Falling down on the ground unconsciously)

자비를 베풀어 주세요. (의식 없이 땅에 쓰러지며) 

 

King: (Finding a large wound on the man’s stomach) What happened to you?

왕: (남자의 배에 난 커다란 상처를 발견하고서) 무슨 일이 있었는가? 

 

Come on! Are you okay? (Putting his hand on the unconscious man’s neck to see if he is alive)

이보게! 괜찮나? (살아 있는지 살피기 위해 의식 없는 남자의 목에 손을 대고) 

 

Judging from your wound, I need to do something to stop the bleeding! Doctor! Doctor! (Carrying the wounded man into the hut)

상처로 보건데, 출혈을 멈추게 하기 위해 뭔가 해야 해! 의사! 의사! (상처 난 남자를 오두막으로 옮기면서)

 

Act 2, Scene 2

2막 2장 

In the hut, a doctor is caring for the bearded man who fell down on the ground unconscious.

오두막에서 의사가 의식 없이 땅에 넘어진 수염 난 남자를 돌보고 있다. 

 

King: Is he going to make it?

왕: 그가 회복될까? 

 

Doctor: I am not sure, Your Majesty.

의사: 잘 모르겠습니다. 전하. 

 

King: I wonder who this man is. Anyway, there’s no time for that now.

왕: 이 사람이 누군지 궁금하군. 어쨌든 지금으로서는 시간이 없네. 

 

You must do your best to save his life.

그의 생명을 구하기 위해 최선을 다해야 하네. 

 

Doctor: Yes, Your Majesty. I will do my best.

의사: 네, 전하. 최선을 다하겠습니다.

 

Act 3, Scene 1

3막 1장

The hermit wakes up early the next morning and leaves for work.

은자는 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나 일하러 떠난다. 

 

After the hermit is gone, the king’s bodyguards rush to the king.

은자가 간 후 왕의 경호원은 왕에게 달려간다. 

 

Bodyguard: (Rushing to the king, in an urgent voice) Your Majesty, I’m afraid this place is dangerous for you.

경호원: (달려가서 다급한 목소리로) 전하, 이곳이 전하께 위험한 것 같습니다. 

 

King: Why?

왕: 왜 그러느냐? 

 

Bodyguard: Last night, we found a strange man carrying a weapon. I think we had better leave this place as soon as possible.

경호원: 어젯밤에, 무기를 든 낯선 사람을 찾아냈습니다. 가능한 한 빨리 이곳을 떠나야 할 것 같습니다. 

 

King: Okay. I’ll return to my palace after I meet the hermit.

왕: 알겠다. 은자를 만난 후에 궁으로 돌아가겠다. 

 

Act 3, Scene 2

3막 2장 

The king sees the bearded man awake.

왕은 수염 난 남자가 깨어 있는 것을 본다. 

 

Bearded man: (In a weak voice) Forgive me!

수염 난 남자: (약한 목소리로) 용서해 주십시오! 

 

King: Are you okay now?

왕: 지금은 괜찮은가? 

 

Bearded man: Forgive me!

수염 난 남자: 용서해 주십시오! 

 

King: What do you mean? I have nothing to forgive you for.

왕: 무슨 뜻이냐? 나는 너를 용서할 게 전혀 없다. 

 

Bearded man: Yes, Your Majesty. You do not know me, but I know you.

수염 난 남자: 있습니다. 전하. 전하는 저를 모르시지만 저는 전하를 알고 있습니다. 

 

Seeing that you took away my property and put my brother to death, I was an enemy of yours who sought to get back at you.

전하께서 제 재산을 빼앗아 가시고 제 동생을 죽이셨다는 것을 알고, 저는 전하께 복수를 하려고 한 전하의 적이었습니다. 

 

Knowing you had gone alone to see the hermit, I planned to kill you on your way back.

은자를 만나러 홀로 가셨다는 것을 알고 저는 전하께서 돌아가시는 길에 죽일 계획이었습니다. 

 

But on my way here, I came upon your soldiers, who wounded me.

하지만 여기 오는 길에 전하의 군사들을 우연히 마주쳤고 그들이 저에게 상처를 입혔습니다. 

 

I would not have survived if you had not saved my life.

전하께서 제 생명을 구하지 않으셨다면 저는 죽었을 것입니다. 

 

If you allow it, I will serve you as your most faithful servant.

허락해 주신다면 저는 전하의 가장 충실한 신하로 봉사하겠습니다. 저를 용서해 주십시오, 전하! 

 

Forgive me, Your Majesty! King: I forgive you! And I also accept you as one of my men. 

왕: 너를 용서한다! 그리고 또한 너를 내 부하 중 하나로 받아들이겠다.

 

Act 4, Scene 1

4막 1장 

The hermit is outside, planting seeds in the ground that had been dug the day before.

은자는 전날 팠던 땅에 씨를 뿌리며 밖에 있다. 

 

King: (Approaching the hermit) For the last time, I beg you to answer my questions, wise man.

왕: (은자에게 다가서며) 마지막으로, 현명한 이여, 내 질문들에 대답해 주기를 부탁하네. 

 

Hermit: Your questions were answered only when the wounded man appeared.

은자: 전하의 질문들은 부상당한 남자가 나타났을 때 응답 받았습니다. 

 

King: What do you mean?

왕: 무슨 뜻인가? 

 

Hermit: If you had not dug these beds for me, that man would have attacked you.

은자: 전하께서, 저를 위해 화단을 파지 않으셨다면, 그 남자는 전하를 공격했겠지요. 

 

You might have been killed. So the most important time was when you were digging the beds, and I was the most important man, and helping me was your most important task.

전하는 죽임을 당했을지도 모릅니다. 그래서 가장 중요한 때는 전하께서 화단을 파고 있었을 때이고 저는 가장 중요한 사람이었으며, 저를 도운 것이 전하의 가장 중요한 일이었습니다. 

 

Afterwards, when that man ran to us, the most important time was when you were attending to him.

그 후, 그 남자가 우리에게 달려왔을 때, 가장 중요한 때는 전하께서 그를 돌보고 계셨던 때입니다. 

 

If you had not had the doctor save his life, the bearded man would have died without having made peace with you.

만약 의사로 하여금 그의 생명을 구하게 하지 않았더라면, 수염 난 남자는 전하와 화해하지 못하고 죽었을 것입니다. 

 

So he was the most important man, and what you did for him was the most important thing for you to do.

그래서 그는 가장 중요한 사람이었고 그를 위해 전하께서 하신 일은 전하께서 하실 가장 중요한 일이었습니다. 

 

King: You’re right. You’re right. I didn’t know anything about that at that time.

왕: 자네가 맞네. 맞아. 그 당시에는 그것에 대해서는 전혀 몰랐네.

 

Hermit: Yes, none of us knows what the future has in store for us.

은자: 우리 중 아무도 미래에 우리를 위해 무엇이 준비되어 있는지 모릅니다. 

 

King: You speak words of wisdom, old man.

왕: 지혜의 말씀을 해 주시는군요, 노인이시여. 

 

Hermit: Remember that there is only one time that is important: that time is now.

은자: 중요한 때는 오직 한 번이 있고 그때가 지금임을 기억하십시오. 

 

Seeing that the present is the only time you are granted that you have control over, it is the most important time.

현재가 전하께서 부여받은 조종할 수 있는 유일한 시간이라는 것으로 보아, 현재가 가장 중요한 시간입니다. 

 

The most important person is the one you are with, for you will never know whether you will ever have dealings with anyone else.

어떤 다른 사람과 어떤 교제를 하게 될지 결코 알지 못하기 때문에 가장 중요한 사람은 당신과 함께 있는 사람입니다. 

 

King: (Looking into the eyes of the hermit) Oh, I should have been wiser to realize this.

왕: (은자의 눈을 들여다보며) 오, 이것을 깨달을 만큼 더 현명했어야 했는데. 

 

I am grateful for the answers you have given to me. I have now found all three answers!

저에게 주신 답에 대해 감사드립니다. 이제 나는 세 가지 대답을 찾아냈습니다! 

 

Act 4, Scene 2

4막 2장 

King: (Excited) Bodyguard, bodyguard!

왕: (흥분해서) 경호원, 경호원! 

 

Bodyguard: (Running out of the woods) Yes, Your Majesty.

경호원: (숲에서 뛰어나오면서) 예, 전하. 

 

King: Thanks to this man, I have all the answers to the three questions.

왕: 이 분 덕에 세 가지 질문에 대한 답을 다 얻었네. 

 

Call my men from the palace and have them grant him anything that he wishes for.

내 부하들을 궁전에서 불러, 그들로 하여금 그가 원하는 것은 무엇이든 주도록 하게. 

 

Bodyguard: (Lowering his head) Yes, Your Majesty.

경호원: (머리를 숙이고) 예, 전하. 

 

With his questions fully answered, the king makes up his mind to live by the hermit’s great teachings.

질문에 완전히 답을 얻고서 왕은 은자의 위대한 가르침에 따라 살기로 결심한다.
