Have you ever frowned at thoughtless people who were talking loudly in the library?

도서관에서 크게 떠드는 부주의한 사람들을 보고 눈살을 찌푸린 적이 있는가? 

 

Have you ever felt threatened by people pushing you aside on the subway?

지하철에서 밀치는 사람들에 의해 위협받는다고 느낀 적이 있는가? 

 

Did you jaywalk on the way to school today?

오늘 학교 가는 길에 무단 횡단을 했는가? 

 

All of these are related to civic life.

이 모든 것들은 시민 생활과 관련되어 있다. 

 

Responsible citizens form a safer, cleaner community where members contribute to one another’s happiness and comfort.

책임 있는 시민들이, 구성원들이 서로의 행복과 편안함에 이바지하는 더 안전하고 더 깨끗한 사회를 형성한다. 

 

The three examples below show how a responsible citizen should act.

다음의 세 가지 예들은 책임 있는 시민이 어떻게 행동해야 하는지를 보여준다. 

 

• Civic awareness begins when people follow simple rules such as traffic regulations.

• 시민 의식은 교통 법규 같은 간단한 규칙들을 따를 때 시작된다. 

 

However, many ambulance drivers complain of selfish drivers and careless pedestrians.

그러나 많은 구급차 운전자들은 이기적인 운전자들과 부주의한 통행자들에 대해 불평한다.

 

“Please move over. This is an emergency!”

“비켜주세요. 응급 상황입니다!” 

 

Even though an ambulance driver shouted this to the cars nearby and the siren was ringing, only some cars were slowly changing their lanes.

구급차 운전자들이 이 말을 근처 차들에게 소리치고 사이렌이 울리고 있었는데도 단지 몇몇 차들만이 천천히 차선을 변경하고 있었다. 

 

According to traffic regulations, drivers must make way for emergency vehicles. Pedestrians also caused difficulties.

교통 법규에 따르면 운전자들은 응급 차량에게 길을 내주어야 한다. 보행자들 역시 힘들게 했다. 

 

Several pedestrians who crossed the street at a red light blocked the way, delaying the ambulance’s arrival.

빨간 불에 길을 건너는 몇몇 보행자들이 길을 막았고 구급차의 도착을 늦게 만들었다. 

 

When the ambulance finally arrived at the destination, the driver said, “It is very fortunate that we made it in time!

구급차가 마침내 목적지에 도착했을 때, 운전자는 말했다. “제 시간에 온 건 진짜 행운입니다! 

 

But the people who didn’t make way for us should be ashamed of themselves for having broken traffic laws.”

하지만 우리에게 길을 내주지 않은 사람들은 교통법을 어긴 것에 대해 부끄러워해야만 합니다.”

 

• Responsible citizens also show good manners.

• 책임 있는 시민은 또한 좋은 예절을 보여준다. 

 

When they are in public places, they keep order and clean up after themselves.

공공장소에 있을 때 그들은 질서를 지키고 자신들 처리를 깨끗이 한다. 

 

Last Saturday, thousands of people flocked to a fireworks festival.

지난 토요일에 수천 명의 사람들이 불꽃놀이 축제에 모였다. 

 

Even though the fireworks were beautiful, some people’s misbehavior made it hard to fully enjoy the beauty of the fireworks.

불꽃놀이는 아름다웠지만 일부 사람들의 잘못된 행동이 불꽃놀이의 아름다움을 마음껏 즐기는 것을 어렵게 만들었다. 

 

Most people observed the law. However, some people pushed one another, hurting others.

대부분의 사람들은 법을 준수했다. 그러나 어떤 사람들은 서로 밀어서 다른 사람들을 다치게 했다. 

 

The police reported that more than a hundred people had been hurt and fourteen of them had been taken to hospital that day.

경찰은 그날 100명이 넘는 사람들이 다쳤고 그들 중 14명은 병원에 실려갔다고 발표했다. 

 

Furthermore, volunteer workers had a very hard time cleaning up the area as it was full of garbage.

게다가, 자원봉사자들은 그곳이 쓰레기로 가득했기 때문에 청소하느라 아주 힘든 시간을 보냈다. 

 

“I wish people cared more about others than just about themselves,” said a volunteer worker.

“나는 사람들이 단지 자기 자신보다 다른 사람들에게 더 관심 갖기를 바랍니다.”라고 한 자원봉사자가 말했다.

 

• Last, but not least, good citizens do not neglect but help their neighbors in need.

• 마지막으로, 그러나 역시 중요한 것은, 훌륭한 시민들은 도움이 필요한 이웃들을 소홀히 하지 않고 돕는다는 것이다. 

 

On February 14th at 6:20 a.m., the 119 emergency center received an urgent call.

2월 14일 오전 6시 20분에 119 응급센터가 긴급한 전화를 받았다. 

 

“There is a fire in the building! And there are people inside!”

“건물에 화재가 났어요! 그리고 사람들이 안에 있어요!” 

 

When the firefighters and the 119 rescue team arrived at the scene, the firefighters were not faced with the usual parking problem.

소방관들과 119 구조대가 현장에 도착했을 때 소방관들은 일상적인 주차 문제에 부딪히지 않았다. 

 

The neighbors had already moved their cars to make space for the fire engine.

이웃들은 소방차를 위한 공간을 만들기 위해 이미 차들을 옮겼다. 

 

When the rescue team arrived on the fifteenth floor, they saw some neighbors trying to put out the fire with fire extinguishers.

구조대가 15층에 도착했을 때 그들은 몇몇 이웃들이 소화기로 불을 끄려고 노력하는 것을 보았다. 

 

With the neighbors’ help, the 119 team rescued the family who had been trapped inside.

이웃들의 도움으로 119 구조대는 안에 갇혔던 가족을 구했다. 

 

The neighbor who called 119 said, “I was so relieved to see them safe.”

119에 전화한 이웃 사람이 말했다. “그들이 안전한 것을 보니 정말 안심이 됩니다.” 

 

The head officer of the emergency center said, “The neighbors’ help and our team’s quick response kept the fire from turning into a bigger disaster.

응급센터 책임자가 말했다. “이웃들의 도움과 우리 팀의 빠른 대응으로 화재가 더 큰 재난으로 변하는 것을 막았습니다. 

 

We’d like to thank the neighbors for having helped the rescue.”

우리는 구조를 도와준 것에 대해 이웃들에게 감사드립니다.”

 

These three examples show simple ways to become a responsible citizen.

이 세 가지 예들은 책임 있는 시민이 되는 간단한 방법들을 보여준다. 

 

Observing simple regulations, showing good manners in public, and helping neighbors in need can prevent a lot of tragic accidents.

간단한 규범을 지키는 것, 공공장소에서 바른 예절을 보여주는 것, 도움이 필요한 이웃들을 돕는 것이 많은 비극적 사고를 막을 수 있다. 

 

Each individual has the potential to contribute to making the world a better place.

각 개인은 세상을 더 좋은 곳으로 만드는 데 공헌할 잠재력을 가지고 있다. 

 

These days, more and more drivers are making way for emergency vehicles.

요즘 점점 더 많은 운전자들이 응급 차량에게 길을 내어주고 있다. 

 

Our manners are noticeably improving.

우리의 예절은 눈에 띄게 향상되고 있다. 

 

There are many volunteers who are more than willing to help those in need.

도움이 필요한 이들을 아주 기꺼이 돕는 자원봉사자들이 많다. 

 

Becoming a responsible citizen and making the community a better place are not difficult.

책임 있는 시민이 되고 지역사회를 더 좋은 곳으로 만드는 것은 어렵지 않다. 

 

Observe the law. Keep order. Care about others. In other words, just go back to basics.

법을 준수하라 질서를 지켜라 다른 사람들에게 관심을 가져라. 즉, 기본부터 다시 시작하라.
