Where You Live, What You Wear

여러분이 사는 곳, 여러분이 입는 것 

Climate plays a key role in what we wear, and the way we live as a whole.

기후는 우리가 입는 것과 사는 방식 전반에 중요한 역할을 한다. 

 

In the Netherlands, for example, where one fourth of its land area is located below sea level, an interesting form of shoes developed as a way of getting around the muddy roads.

예를 들어, 땅의 4분의 1이 해수면 아래에 위치한 네덜란드에서는 진흙투성이 길을 돌아다니는 방법으로 한 재미있는 형태의 신발이 개발되었다. 

 

Wooden shoes, called klompen, were the perfect tool to keep farmers' feet dry while working in wet areas.

‘klompen’이라고 불리는 나무 신발은 젖은 지역에서 일하는 동안 농부들의 발이 마른 상태로 있게 하는 완벽한 도구였다. 

 

A few artistic souls went further to begin dancing in klompen, which makes a pleasant series of rhythms, eventually providing a basis for modern tap dancing.

몇몇 예술적인 사람들이 더 나아가 ‘klompen’을 신고 춤을 추기 시작했고, 그것은 유쾌한 일련의 리듬을 만들어 내는데, 결국 현대 탭댄스의 기본을 제공했다. 

 

The Inuit had to fight the cold and the wind, and came up with the idea of wearing a heavy jacket called an anorak.

이누이트족은 추위와 바람과 맞서 싸워야 했기 때문에 ‘anorak’이라고 불리는 두터운 재킷을 입을 생각을 해 냈다. 

 

It was originally made from seal skin, and its surface had to be cared for regularly with fish oil for constant water resistance.

Now, it is a modern winter necessity, coming in a variety of styles and colors.

Pajamas have followed a similar route to become trendy fashion wear in the bedroom or on the streets.

파자마는 비슷한 경로를 따르며 침실이나 거리에서 유행하는 패션 의상이 되었다. 

 

In India, where staying cool is very important, a pair of wide pants made of light and soft fabric seemed to be the perfect way to stay cool.

시원하게 지내는 것이 매우 중요한 인도에서, 가볍고 부드러운 천으로 만들어진 한 벌의 폭넓은 바지는 시원하게 지내는 완벽한 방법처럼 보였다. 

 

The British rulers at the time liked the idea and spread the Indian pajamas to the rest of the world, helping them to arrive in our bedrooms.

그 시절의 영국인 지배자들은 그 아이디어를 좋아했고 인도식 파자마를 세계 다른 지역으로 퍼뜨려서, 그것들이 우리 침실에 도달하는 것을 도왔다. 

 

The old saying that necessity is the mother of invention does make sense, and some good inventions seem to spread quickly and easily.

필요가 발명의 어머니라는 오래된 속담은 타당하며, 몇몇 좋은 발명은 빠르고 쉽게 퍼져가는 것 같다.
