A Capsule of Light

빛의 캡슐 

 

The rescue capsule Fénix was designed by the Chilean Navy in collaboration with NASA to rescue the 33 miners trapped underground in Chile's San José copper mine.

구조 캡슐 Fénix는 칠레 해군이 칠레의 San José 구리 광산의 지하에 갇힌 33명의 광부들을 구조하기 위해 NASA와 협력하여 설계되었다. 

 

Painted in the red, white, and blue colors of Chile, the Fénix looked like a military missile.

칠레를 상징하는 빨간색, 하얀색, 파란색으로 칠해진 Fénix는 마치 군사용 미사일처럼 생겼다. 

 

The device was nearly 3.95 meters high on the outside, and the inside was 1.9 meters high and about 51 centimeters across, which was just enough room for an adult male.

이 장치는 외장 길이가 약 3.95미터이고, 내장은 높이가 1.9미터, 폭은 약 51센티미터였는데, 이는 성인 남성 한 사람이 겨우 들어가기에 충분한 공간이었다. 

 

When mobilized by the rescue team, the Fénix was equipped with an emergency oxygen supply.

Fénix가 구조팀에 의해 동원되었을 때, 비상 산소 공급 장치가 갖추어져 있었다. 

 

The bottom of the capsule held three tanks of air, which would provide enough air for one person to breathe for about 90 minutes.

구조 캡슐의 아래쪽에는 3개의 공기 탱크가 있었는데, 이것들은 한 사람이 약 90분 동안 숨쉴 수 있을 정도의 공기를 제공할 수 있었다. 

 

This amount of air was more than needed for the 15 to 20 minutes that the trip to the surface was expected to take.

It also had a communication system so that the miners could speak to the surface while being lifted up.

In an emergency, such as the capsule getting stuck in the rescue hole, the bottom could be opened from the inside so that the miner could be lowered back down to the shelter.

Thanks to the capsule and the organized rescue efforts, the miners put an end to their life of darkness.

구조 캡슐과 조직적인 구조 노력 덕분에, 광부들은 그들의 암흑의 삶에 종지부를 찍었다. 

 

When they stepped out of the capsule door to meet their loved ones, the designers of the Fénix shared in the joy; their efforts resulted in the saving of 33 lives.
