How do Koreans become a year older?

한국인들은 어떻게 한 살을 더 먹을까요?

 

They have a special way.

그들에게는 특별한 방법이 있습니다.

 

They eat tteokguk, a rice cake soup, on seollal.

그들은 설날에 떡이 들어간 수프인 떡국을 먹습니다.

 

Eating tteokguk means getting one year older.

떡국을 먹는 것은 한 살을 더 먹는 것을 의미합니다.

 

Songpyeon - Special Day: Chuseok

송편 – 특별한 날: 추석

 

During chuseok, Koreans make and eat songpyeon.

추석 동안에, 한국인들은 송편을 만들어 먹습니다.

 

They give thanks for the year with songpyeon.

그들은 송편으로 그 해에 감사를 드립니다.

 

Making pretty songpyeon means having a pretty child someday.

예쁜 송편을 만드는 것은 언젠가 예쁜 아이를 갖는 것을 의미합니다.

This dish is miyeokguk.

이 요리는 미역국이에요.

 

It’s a kind of seaweed soup.

해초 수프의 일종이에요.

 

I was afraid at first.

저는 처음에 두려웠어요.

 

But when I tried the soup, it had a rich taste.

하지만 그 국을 먹었을 때 진한 맛이 났어요.

 

The seaweed ran around in my mouth.

미역이 입안에서 돌아다녔어요.

 

It was more slippery than oil!

그것은 기름보다 더 미끌미끌했어요!

 

It was a new taste for me, but I enjoyed eating it.

그건 저에게 새로운 맛이었지만 저는 맛있게 먹었어요.

 

Above all, it went great with a bowl of rice.

무엇보다 밥 한 공기와 잘 어울렸어요.

 

Koreans eat miyeokguk on their birthdays.

한국인들은 생일에 미역국을 먹어요.

 

This tradition comes from mothers.

이 전통은 어머니들에게서 비롯되었어요.

 

After a child is born, the mother eats miyeokguk for her health.

아이가 태어난 후에, 어머니는 건강을 위해 미역국을 먹어요.

 

But how do Koreans put candles in it?

하지만 한국인들은 어떻게 그 안에 초를 꽂을까요?

This chicken dish is samgyetang.

이 닭 요리는 삼계탕이에요.

 

But don’t expect three chickens.

하지만 세 마리의 닭을 기대하지는 마세요.

 

“Sam” here means ginseng, not the number three.

여기서 ‘삼’은 숫자 3이 아니라 인삼을 의미해요.

 

When I saw the dish, my mouth dropped open.

요리를 봤을 때 제 입은 딱 벌어졌어요.

 

There was a whole chicken in front of me!

제 앞에 닭 한 마리가 통째로 있었어요!

 

The chicken soup in my country has little pieces of chicken in it.

우리나라의 닭고기 수프는 그 안에 작은 닭고기 조각들이 들어 있어요.

 

Be careful of the very hot samgyetang.

매우 뜨거운 삼계탕을 조심하세요.

 

It’s hotter than the sun!

그것은 태양보다 더 뜨거워요!

 

The meat was very soft.

고기는 매우 부드러웠어요.

 

It fell off the bone and flew into my mouth.

고기가 뼈에서 떨어져서 제 입안으로 날아들어 갔어요.

 

Samgyetang is much tastier than chicken soup.

삼계탕은 닭고기 수프보다 훨씬 더 맛있어요.

 

Many Koreans enjoy eating samgyetang on really hot days.

많은 한국인들은 정말 무더운 날에 삼계탕을 즐겨 먹어요.

 

It’s like fighting fire with fire.

이열치열 같아요.

 

No thanks.

저는 고맙지만 사양이에요.

 

I recommend trying it on a cold day.

저는 추운 날에 먹어 보는 것을 권해요.
