우분투

A man from a foreign country lived in an African village.

외국에서 온 어떤 남자가 아프리카의 한 마을에 살았다.

 

One day, when he was walking in the village, he met a group of children.

어느 날 그가 마을을 걷고 있을 때 한 무리의 아이들을 만났다.

 

The children waved and smiled at him brightly.

그 아이들은 그에게 손을 흔들며 밝게 미소 지었다.

 

Their smiles made him happy.

그들의 미소는 그를 행복하게 만들었다.

 

So the man thought of a game for them.

그래서 그 남자는 아이들을 위한 놀이 하나를 생각해 냈다.

 

He put candies in a basket and placed it under a tree.

그는 바구니에 사탕을 담고 그것을 나무 아래에 놓았다.

 

Then he said, “Children, run to the basket. The first person there will get all the candies.”

그러고 나서 그는 “얘들아, 바구니까지 달려. 일등한 사람이 모든 사탕을 다 가지는 거야.”

 

The man drew a line on the ground, and the children stood there.

그 남자는 땅에 선을 그었고 아이들은 거기에 섰다.

 

“Ready, set, go!” the man said loudly.

“제자리에, 준비, 출발!”이라고 남자가 크게 말했다.

 

But, surprisingly, the children did not race to the basket.

하지만 놀랍게도 아이들은 바구니까지 달려가지 않았다.

 

They held one another’s hands and ran together.

그들은 서로의 손을 잡고 함께 달렸다.

 

The children arrived at the tree all at the same time and shared the candies.

아이들은 모두 동시에 나무에 도착했고 사탕을 나눠 먹었다.

 

Everyone was happy.

모두가 행복해했다.

 

The man could not believe his eyes.

남자는 자신의 눈을 믿을 수 없었다.

 

He went over to them and asked, “Why did you run together?”

그는 그들에게 다가가 “너희들은 왜 함께 달렸니?”라고 물었다.

 

The children shouted, “Ubuntu!”

아이들은 “우분투!”라고 소리쳤다.

 

One girl added, “How can we be happy when others are sad?”

한 소녀는 “다른 사람이 슬플 때 어떻게 우리가 행복할 수 있겠어요?”라고 덧붙였다.

 

This is a beautiful story about ubuntu.

이것은 우분투에 대한 아름다운 이야기이다.

 

Ubuntu means “I am because we are.”

우분투는 ‘우리가 있기 때문에 내가 있다.’라는 뜻이다.

 

Simply, it means care and love.

간단하게 그것은 배려와 사랑을 뜻한다.

 

When we keep the idea of ubuntu, we can all live happy lives.

우리가 우분투 정신을 가질 때 우리 모두 행복한 삶을 살 수 있다.

 

Let’s all practice ubuntu.

우리 모두 우분투를 실천하자.

 

We are one human family.

우리는 한 인간 가족이다.
